We should ALL be in the practice of demanding and VERIFYING someone's Identification whenever they interrupt and/or bother us as we go about our private business.

Copy down their ID, call the Station House, and make sure they're not some sort of impostor, or IDENTITY THIEF LOOKING FOR ALL YOUR INFORMATION.

I believe you have the right to request they call for backup.

I agree with you Fargle and especially with women who are stopped by a road patrol with someone posing as an officer. Anybody could purchase a police siren light and a fake badge only to find out these individuals could be predators or rapists.

What's the huge fear of cops in Americans? Aren't your police properly-trained and supervised?

When in doubt, volunteer to go to the station/precinct house. I don't know how that works with the very screwy American system, but here, at least, you can't be arrested for cooperating. If the officer refuses to acompany you to the station, then clearly something is amiss....

I don't fear cops and as a matter of fact, I know a few them who work in my community.  I also interned at my local Sheriff's Office and needless to say, the cop, who I rode with him during his routine patrol duties was arrested for grand theft.  However, I met a few of them who are professional and dedicated to their jobs.

I am speaking on being safe.

Maybe it's just a perception, but it seems the relationship between the American police and citizens is more "fear". Maybe it's because of all the "cop shows". Here, it would never occur to people to question the police. It's not that people are afraid of them, or that there aren't people who masquerade as the police, but it doesn't seem to be part of the culture. I've always found the distinction as odd.

Of course, the other side of it is that if you are caught pretending to be a police officer, you go to millitary prison for a very long time

Well, we do have a lot of cop shows and one reality cop show, actually called "Cops" that shows the interactions between the police and the citizens in different cities.

In your country, how long does the criminal impersonating a cop serve in prison?  Does this also apply to the offender, if this person has been arrested for this offense for the first time?

IMO it's those folks who fall on the left side of the political spectrum who seem to be afraid of law enforcement, while those on the right don't fear them at all.

Hehe, there is a channel that airs the "World's Wildest Police Videos" or something like that. It's fun ... but I usually get bored after about ten minutes I also am an avid fan of L&O, but I digress...

A far as how long you spend in prison for impersonating a police officer, I don't know, specifically. I'm not a lawyer. There is a significant distinction between the uniform police -for which you get sent up to the military courts which are still allowed to dictate death sentences-; and the civilian police, where you can trade off jail time for community service. This community service usually takes the form of becoming a snitch for their other undercover opperations. Military courts typically hand out sentences in excess of 20 years, while civilian courts rarely condemn anyone for more than 15.

Typically, one's first offense in pretty much anything -even homicide- is commuted. I don't particularly like the system.

Though it is a well-known fact that if you annoy the police, they will take you into a back room and beat on you for a while. Nothing that violates the Geneva Convention, of course, but it can't be pleasant

You should never trust anyone who hasn't earned it, period.  Wearing a uniform doesn't mean a person is trustworthy, it just means they passed a few tests and got through an interview.

There are cops who are dedicated to their jobs, but there are also those of which are dirtier than backed up sewage.

Heh, I've noticed that too. Funny that

selfbnd411, you do have a point there. The police here are actually profesional; they are required to take a four-year college course to become an officer, including complete military training. I guess that definately improves the quality of officers...

Most cops are good, but giving blanket trust to any organization isn't a conservative or a liberal quality.  It's the quality of fools.  A famous rebel once said:

"If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it to control itself."

James Madison, Federalist #51, Feb 6 1788

Well, yes, you -and Madison- do have a very good point. I don't mean "blanket" or "blind" trust over an institution, but I was more remarking on the "fear" part I detect in a lot of Americans in regards to their police force. It's like they distrust them more just because they are cops.

But, just because the police are well-trained and professional, it doesn't mean you should automatically trust them (unless you have no choice). That's why it's imperative you know your rights, and police procedures so in the case a police officer makes a mistake, you don't end up having serious consecuences. Or you don't make a mistake that has serious consecuences. Like trying to outrun the police, like in those WWPV things. *rolls eyes*

That "Leftist Fear of the the Police" hypothesis is FALSE.

*I*, the original poster, am so far on the Right, George Bush is a COMMIE.

Nice attempt at pointless Lib Bashing, though. I'm sure the "ALWAYS TRUST A COP" propagandists would approve.

We have a 2nd Amendment SO WE DO NOT NEED POLICE.

Wah.  You are headed into a police state anyways.  The military has already conducted numerous take down and occupation exercises over the years through various US cities in conjunction with the local police in an apparent effort to desensitize the public, just like the old frog in a pot routine.  The trouble is that the public is too stupid and oblivious to do anything about it.

there was a case in my fair city recently where 3 women were killed in their apartments.  the killer? had acquired a passable looking uniform and badge on the internet.

things arent always what they seem.

kitten, who knows a healthy bit of fear is a good thing.

i was thinking the same thing A rather famous example is G. Gordon Liddy...  ref "Jack-booted thugs". Aside from the stoners, leftists are often quite fond of having the Authoritais regulate other people's behavior.

What was that thing i read once, about power and corruption? Some dead guy wrote it? Anybody know what i'm talking about?

Over here, where I'm from, we have police pretending to be police.

I dare say, I will never be called for jury duty, again.
