Box wine, yuck! I very rarely drink wine, but because of where I'm from, it's kind of mandatory to know about it Anywhoo, the wine in boxes -or tetrapacks- reacts with the inside plastic polymer on occasion, and can cause a "tacky" taste in the interior. This is why quality bottled wines still use natural corks: the acidity reacts with the plastic. Of course, if it's a really good wine, you probably won't notice it. However, good wines -"first press"- rarely go into boxes. If you get a good boxed wine, it probably is a fluke, and has to do with the particular harvest blend. However, if I recall correctly, California boxed wine is generic: it's usually a combination of the "leftovers" from different vinyards that didn't make the grade for bottled wine. It's typically packaged in a large company factory, and has no personalisation or follow-up. Therefore, it's more than likely that the same "brand" wine of a different year will probably taste quite differently -and that other "brands" will taste exactly the same, because, well, they are the same.
