Commentary: Ann Coulter is very intelligent but totally lacking in scruples. She knows what buttons to push to rile people up and in the process make gobs of money. This makes her no different than many other so called pundits on both the left and the right. The ideology such people espouse is irrelevant (I said it before and I’ll say it again, the Left and the Right are mirror images of each other), their lack of decency is what should earn them social ostracism. Humor and satire have their place in politics but decency demands limits.

Ann Coulter is theater. Either she, or someone on her behalf, was smart enough to create a character that multitudes of sheeple will love to hate.

Her act adds fuel to the fire that feeds smokescreens and illusions... which ultimately helps keep the masses emotionally attached to political polarization.

Geez... the PTB must fucking love her to death!

"It's Hardball.  That's how it works--Chris asks the hard questions and doesn't let them dither.  I see nothing wrong with confronting a pundit with his or her own words and forcing them to deal with it.

And the move was brilliant imo.  Nobody likes Coulter aside from the 10% lunatic fringe of the Republican Party, and they wouldn't vote for Edwards if he was Christ himself.  Nothing to lose and much to gain in terms of energizing the base. "

Is this an admission that Chris mathews is a partisan Democrat, not a journalist?  Why would the goal of a "journalist" be to energize the base?  Would the fairness doctrine come into play here?

Ann who???

If you're genuinely interested in who these people are that you never seem to have heard of, you could always employ Google and become informed, you know.

Got to disagree on that one, Rich. She comes across as someone that witnessed someone using sharp wit, and thought "I can do that", but only managed to be mean.

Bill Maher, Dennis Miller, Keith Olberman, PJ O'Rourke, funny. Ann Coulter, not.

farglebargle -> RE: Ann Coulter continues to embarass herself. (6/28/2007 4:10:11 AM)

Well, in the early days of the Neocon Hijacking of the Conservative Party, a lot of the Neocon Party Whore Cheerleaders couldn't wait for her juvenile brand of vitriol.

And if people were willing to pay her 20,000 dollar speakers' fee? Free air-transportation, Free meals, Free Limos???

No. News outlets cannot broadcast any sort of crap they want. They are restricted by what the public wants to listen to.

You *do* realize they are LICENSED? There IS NO FREE MARKET IN BROADCASTING. It is strictly regulated by The People.

The airwaves DO NOT EXIST TO MAKE BROADCASTERS MONEY. They exist to SERVE THE PUBLIC.

Simple enough, if they do not wish to obey The People, the do not have to apply for a broadcast license, and they can pay whatever legal penalties they incur due to their CHOICE to operate unlicensed.

She's not a dingbat [:D], but she isn't quite as smart as she probably thinks she is, either.

General response ...

What amazes me, is how people on the right will support the likes of Ann Coulter, and on the left, people like Bill Mahar (however it is spelled), when they make these sort of statements.

If I was a Republican, and heard some of the things Ann Coulter has said, I would be doing everything I could to distance myself from her. Likewise Harry Reid and his "The war is already lost." comment. If I was a Democrat, I would be throwing that 'ol boy under the bus as fast as I could.

As an aside, I would be interrest to know if John Edwards actually paid $400 for a haircut, or if it was more of a full service sort of thing. There are a few places in Houston that do the haircut, nails, shave, lunch, and bottle of wine thing ... and I'm sure you can pile up a big bill pretty quickly. I'm told there is a place in Dallas where you can get lap dances while you wait. [;)]

Yep, she is Morton Downey Jr. in a short skirt and heels.  In 15 years, no one will remember her.  She and other's like her attract only the lowest common denominator of debate, and the foolish beat a path to her door thinking they are accomplishing something by engaging her in petty little squabbles.

Yes, they are licenced but to say that they are strictly regulated by the people is silly – they are strictly regulated by government bureaucrats who claim to represent the people but in fact represent themselves and the agenda’s of their political masters.

The free market very much operates in broadcasting – people won’t tune in to crap they’re not interested in. Remember Air America? It died for one very simply reason – it sucked. Nobody wanted to listen to it. Rush Limbaugh on the other hand (regardless of what you or I may think of his views) has likewise thrived for a very simple reason – people tune in.

The airwaves simply exist. It is the uses we put them to that decide whether or not they exist to make broadcasters money – the use they are largely put to today (because you can’t tax where there is no profit).

She is not really all that funny.

She is completely wrong about things that I know about.

I am fairly certain she fails to check her facts on topics I dont know anything about.

It would be one thing if she pontificated her malignant twaddle on Stand-Up night at the Improv,
but from what I understand she portrays herself as being relevant, factual, and reasoned.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Ann Coulter continues to embarass herself. (6/28/2007 8:45:45 AM)

To compare Ann Coulter to Harry Reid is pretty ridiculous, caitlyn.  Ann Coulter is a vicious cunt who would never survive in politics.  Harry Reid is a duly elected people's representative who simply says what he truly believes.  That's why he was elected in the first place.

I didn't compare Ann Coulter to Harry Reid.

Nice try though ...

So you disagree with his "The war is already lost" comment.

Would love to hear what you consider "winning" the war actually means.

Of course, since we are not technically "at" war, I am not sure how we can "win" it.

I didn't say that either. Perhaps you and LAM should remove me from this discussion, and misrepresent each other instead.

Harry Reid is Senate Majority Leader, from a party that wants to win an election in 2008. This statement only articulates his feelings for people that will be voting for his party anyway. Given that his party will need the undecided vote in order to win election in 2008, how does this statement do anything but damage that goal?

The statement is not foolish because it's wrong, it's foolish because it has the potential to alienate possible swing voters. It is foolish because it only earns you votes that you will get anyway.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Ann Coulter continues to embarass herself. (6/28/2007 9:57:08 AM)

Oh, I see, the Senate Majority Leader failed to consult caitlyn on strategy before stating his beliefs about the war.  What a loser!

Why does everyone have to pretend to be such a fucking expert?  It's tiresome.  Just maybe Harry Reid thinks the best thing he can do for his party is simply tell the truth, and forget about what some pundit thinks the people want to hear.  Sounds refreshing to me.  Might even give the armchair experts something new to talk about.

caitlyn -> RE: Ann Coulter continues to embarass herself. (6/28/2007 11:02:39 AM)

I didn't claim to be an expert, I stated my opinion.

"If I was a Democrat, I would be throwing that 'ol boy under a bus as fast as I could."

Stating our opinion, tends to be what we do here on a message board. Had I said:

"All Democrats should throw Harry Reid under a bus." ... that would be another story, but of course I never said that.
