quote:
I agree. However CBS doesn't OWN the airwaves they use. THE PEOPLE DO. In theory, yes. But let’s be honest, it is a legal fiction. It is the government that owns the airwaves. quote:
So, why should The People really give a shit about whether THEIR LESSEES make a dime? For the same reason that a landlord should give a shit about whether their tenants make a dime. If people can’t afford what you’re charging, you’re not going to make a sale. quote:
And is it better or worse for The People ( NOT THE ALEs who operate on the airwaves ) for there to be a profit component to THEIR AIRWAVES? Better. Definitely better. It’s is revenue for the government (from the licence fees and from taxes from the corporation as well as taxes from the corporation’s gainfully employed workers). But you are still shying away from the central question. Should (not can, should) the government regulate the content of radio shows? Actually, since most things in politics can be reduced to "where do we draw the lines?", the correct question is – to what extent should the government regulate the content of radio shows? I think they should regulate it as little as possible. If you really want the people to decide, then let the people decide (via ratings). It is arrogant and condescending to say, "I will decide what the people want." As a general comment, I just wanted to add: every time someone says "Rush" I don’t think of a hypocritical blowhard on the radio – I think: "A modern-day warrior... mean, mean stride... today’s Tom Sawyer... mean, mean pride." Oh man, I have sooooo, just dated myself.
