Some people, however, are too pissed off that other people are listening to what they consider the wrong viewpoints. Rather than tolerate the rights of others to make their own choices (toleration is the heart of freedom), they seek to place restrictions on them.

Well said....i may not agree with everything you say or believe, but i would indeed defend your right to say and believe as you see fit...and i do NOT say that lightly...i actually believe in freedom.

Once again, Broadcast Licensees HAVE NO RIGHTS. They exchanged them for PERMISSION to operate a transmitter in accordance with The People's Regulation.

Here's an analogy.

DO YOU HAVE A DRIVER'S LICENSE? AREN'T THOSE REGULATIONS A CLEAR INFRINGEMENT OF YOUR "RIGHT" TO DO WITH YOUR PROPERTY AS YOU CHOOSE?

No. You GAVE UP THOSE RIGHTS when you AGREED to abide by the Regulations.

Don't like the FCC rules? Give up your license, become a Pirate Broadcaster, and pay the penalties.

Don't like the DMV rules? Give up your license, become an unlicensed operator, and sit in jail when you get pulled over.

It's not like there aren't PLENTY of people who will step up and take that broadcast license, and use it in accordance with The People's regulation.

How did people make money in Radio BEFORE the Fairness Doctrine? Yup. Hand over Fist.

You talk about making money like it’s a bad thing. Profit is not bad. Profit is good (how one goes about getting that profit may be bad but that is an entirely separate issue). Profit means paychecks. Profit means tax revenue. Profit means jobs.

You say "fuck them," but what I don’t understand is that the people make their choices known by what they will or will not listen to, but you want the government (in the guise of "the people," but really in the guise of political interests) to come in and declare that the people don’t really want what their choices show they want but would rather have crap they don’t want to listen to (this kind of "I know what’s best for you better than you do" arrogance is found everywhere in politics but is particularly endemic on the left). It appears to me that what you are really saying is "people are listening to political speech that I don’t like, so let’s have the government force them to listen to the political speech I do like." Of course, they won’t listen to the political speech they don’t like and now thanks to this so called Fairness Doctrine, they wouldn’t be able to listen to political speech they do like. Is that the real aim? It is for many. Freedom is guarantee to speak but not a guarantee to be heard. A belief in freedom requires a tolerance of other people’s viewpoints – it does not require an acceptance of them.

You don’t have to like Ann Coulter’s (to try and bring this back to the original subject matter) or Rush Limbaugh’s views, but if you believe in freedom, you have to accept other people’s right to listen to them – and to not listen to what you have to say if that is what they choose.

On a completely unrelated topic, my copy of "Guards! Guards!" arrived in the mail today – but I’ve got a couple of other books to get through before I pick it up.

Thanks. It is depressing how many people say they believe in freedom when what they really mean is "freedom for me and those who agree with me, and fuck everyone else."

Would you please get off of the "People’s Regulation" bullshit! It is the government’s regulation! The "people’s regulation" can be seen in the ratings various shows get. But there are those in the government (and politics in general) who don’t like the way things are turning out so they want to use their power to rig the outcome. The questions is not whether or not the government has the authority to do so, but whether or not the government should use it’s authority to do so. I believe the government should expand freedom as much as possible, not restrict it.

I agree. However CBS doesn't OWN the airwaves they use.

THE PEOPLE DO.

So, why should The People really give a shit about whether THEIR LESSEES make a dime?

And is it better or worse for The People ( NOT THE ALEs who operate on the airwaves ) for there to be a profit component to THEIR AIRWAVES?

Never forget that. CBS, ABC, NBC, are all there ONLY AT THE PLEASURE OF THE PEOPLE.

What sentence (i.e. how big a book did he ask the judge to throw at him) did he ask for due to his oxycontin abuse?

Would be shocked if somebody that insistent on harsh criminal sentences and prison terms for people of that ilk would not step up and be counted when he is found to be a drug abuser himself.

Get back to me on this.
