hejira92 -> BDSM and the SCA (7/9/2007 8:39:26 PM)

A post on the screen names thread has got me wondering about the connection between the lifestyle and the SCA. My sister and her husband have been active in the SCA for over 20 years. They go to Penzic every year and he's the queen's archer from their kingdom, etc. Do they know about the lifestyle and I don't know they do?

For those of you who are involved, did one lead to the other, or did common interests lead you to BDSM and medieval re-enactments? And where do you think the connection and/or commonality lies?

mistoferin -> RE: BDSM and the SCA (7/9/2007 8:41:41 PM)

There is a lot of crossover between the two groups. I can't answer whether or not your sister and her husband know about this lifestyle, but chances are very, very good that they know quite a few people that are in it.

MsSonnetMarwood -> RE: BDSM and the SCA (7/9/2007 8:45:16 PM)

I was probably 19 or 20 when I started going to SCA events, and I got involved in BDSM when I was in my early 20's.  I bought my first two floggers at Pennsic XXIII, and attended one of my first munches at Pennsic XXIV.

So yes, there's definately a crossover ;-)  Did being in the SCA lead to me getting involved in kink?  Not directly, but the crowd of people I used to hang out with were always very erotically charged and open-minded (several were open poly couples), so it certainly set an atmosphere for me to start exploring areas I'd been interested in for as long as I could remember.

For me..well ...I meet most of Lifestyle at SCA and Renaissence Faires before I found out that they were in BDSM.

When I went with my sister to a few events when I was in my early twenties, I just thought it was geeks getting laid. If I only knew! [:D]

awh, i was hoping this was about the Student Conservation Association (a non-profit i used to work for); 'cause there's nothing hotter than kinky environmentalists. http://www.collarchat.com/micons/m11.gif

Heh... This reminded me of a song from the SCA... It has a chorus line that goes:

"Balls to yer partner, ass against the wall... If ya can't get laid in the SCA, ya'll never get laid at all!"

Of course, I don't know how "safe" that is anymore... LOL...

I've been lifestyle, my whole life practically, and I started attending SCA events in my mid teens (about when I was 14) and almost instantly was connecting with other kinksters. The amount involved in it, when I started wasn't that obvious, but as years progressed, it became much, much, much more obvious.

So yes, there's definitely a cross over between the two, though I can't say they're actually tied together... No pun intended... Certainly not everyone that's SCA is a kinkster, but there are quite a few that are. I could probably name 90% of the circle of people I know that are kinksters, and still very active SCAers.

Peace.

GhitaAmati -> RE: BDSM and the SCA (7/10/2007 5:11:16 AM)

Jay Wiseman, in SM101 suggests that if you are having trouble finding play partners, you go find your local SCA group. So Im assuming the corrolation between the two is actually larger than most of us ever origionally realized.

I had been in the lifestyle for quite a few years when I met my husband, at our place of employment. After vanilla dating for several months, I got invited to a play party and decided to take him along. I didnt tell him what kind of a party it was, only warned him things might get a little interesting. We drive out there, knock on the door...and surprise! He's known everyone there for close to 15 years through the SCA.

I spend most weekends either at play parties or at SCA events, most of the time there is quite a bit of crossover, alot of the same people at both places. We spend alot of our time trying to build a pavillion that can be used for full suspension, and figure out what kinds of canvas coverings muffle sound the best. We've in fact held play parties AT SCA events..kinda fun actually. While I dont think the entire SCA is into S&M, I think anyone who has been into the SCA for very many years knows lots of people who are into it, and are rather open and accepting of it.

Alumbrado -> RE: BDSM and the SCA (7/10/2007 7:16:03 AM)

Lots of crossover, no particular connection that I can discern, except an interest in things outside the mainstream.

vield -> RE: BDSM and the SCA (7/10/2007 8:18:47 AM)

I am not sure what lead who where, as in my case I had been into kink long before I was exposed to either SCA or BD/SM lifestyle.
I can see lots and lots of connections and commonality.
Both groups have a LOT of people who really like to dress up in fancy and fantasy costumes.
Both groups have a lot of folks who enjoy rituals.
Many in both groups really like weaponry.
Both groups have many folks who truly love being part of a hierarchy.
Lots of folks in both groups enjoy wacking someone or being wacked.
I suspect that before the internet SCA like the swinger's groups was one of the few places one could trip over other kinky people, if one had an open mind.
I know one big potential problem that exists in alternative groups like SCA many BD/SM people enjoy. Whether it be RenFaires, Wicca events, SCA, Rendezvous or whatever, when one connects well with others and knows many kinky folks are around, it is very easy to forget it is NOT a BD/SM event, and out yourself to someone who is not kink tolerant. For many of us that is not a problem, but for some it can be.

I love this comment...and its true...lots of similarities there. I highlighted the last sentance because my husband wont let me put on armor and learn to fight in the SCA because he says I'll purposly not block the blows because Ill enjoy getting hit too much.

PhilaMale1958 -> RE: BDSM and the SCA (7/10/2007 9:29:17 AM)

Sorry to be naive, but what is SCA?

GhitaAmati -> RE: BDSM and the SCA (7/10/2007 9:41:32 AM)

check out www.SCA.org

re-enactment society, covers most of the middleages of european contact, although others take it farther. We camp in hot places and dress up in wool and linen outfits and put on armor and beat each other with rattan. Lots of fun.

Ok, mainly its about living a dream of honor and chivalry and working together as a community and people being awarded titles for their good deeds and skills as fighters and artisan...but the hitting each other with rattan brings alot of people too...

Faramir -> RE: BDSM and the SCA (7/10/2007 10:00:49 AM)

Don't forget the extra-cool D&D/BDSM connection!

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: BDSM and the SCA (7/10/2007 10:01:54 AM)

One difference is that SCAers tend to love getting drunk and having casual sex (in fact often use drinking as a way to loosen up in order to feel comfortable having the casual sex they want) while bdsmers tend to shun alcohol and casual sex.

GhitaAmati -> RE: BDSM and the SCA (7/10/2007 10:02:46 AM)

Faramir..I have always enjoyed your signature line.....

GhitaAmati -> RE: BDSM and the SCA (7/10/2007 10:05:15 AM)

I dont know that I shun alchohal and casual sex...I do shun alchohal and bdsm "playing".......but id never shun alchohal on its own...part of the reason I enjoy the SCA, to taste all the wonderful mead and homemade cordials...ok, i am a bit of a lush occasionally, so that may explain it....~grin~

instynctive -> RE: BDSM and the SCA (7/10/2007 10:16:27 AM)

I used to play SCA.

What a complete joke I found it to be.

Kudos to those who actually enjoy the insane levels of self-righteous, circle-jerking, self-congratulatory bullshit. :-)

The home brew was definitely the best part.. that, and the super easy chicks...

Gotta agree on Faramir's sigline.

My hero.

:-D
