Then you enter the Veteran's Administration system or are retired by your respective branch of the military. After that you join the Disabled American Veterans org. Then, they check your Military or Veterans records or both. Only then can you get one of those stickers. I guess that still doesn't really answer what I was wondering about. My father is a DAV. But his disability does not impair his ability to walk, so therefore, while he is certified as disabled by the military, he can not use that to park in handicapped spaces. Misto, I don't know how they do things up there but if he needs a handicapped plate he should submit his V.A. paperwork to the State of Michigan Dept of Motor Vehicles Dept. They usually will go with the V.A. doctor's opinions and issue a "Handicapped" or "Disabled Veteran" plate. If he has an official "DAV" sticker on his vehicle he really doesn't need a special lisense plate. If he has no problem with walking why would he even want to park in a handicapped space? I can park in those spaces but like I said I don't unless I'm in a lot of pain. Why use it if you don't need it? My Father's disability is in his arm. He does not require (or want) a handicapped plate for an arm injury. He has a DAV license plate, but that does not enable one to park in a handicapped spot unless your disability specifically affects your ability to walk. The reason why I was asking about the sticker is because my Mother is disabled with congestive heart failure and COPD. She does have a handicapped placard. I asked about the sticker because if it legally allows you to use handicapped parking, then they would not have to pay the extra costs for the placard. She does not drive and so my Father's vehicle is the one she is always in. Erin, it sounds as if the laws in this area are totally different up there in Michigan from other states. Probably the best thing for you to do is to go to the DMV in Michigan and ask (them). As for the DAV stickers I had to sign a medical release of info form for the DAV to access my V.A. medical records to be able to get my sticker. I think going through your state DMV is MUCH easier than all the U.S. govt paperwork I had to do! It sounds like all you have to do in "civland" is get a letter from your dr. and take it to the DMV.
