to the op

i was my moms driver for the last 10 years of her life.......when she was with me, we used her car or took the plaquard with us in mine......we never had any problems finding a spot...and sometimes i would just drop her off at the curb, and sit there until she returned......because if she was determined for it to be done that way......thats what happened.......

had there ever arisen an emergency, i could have driven away immediately, and if it didnt bother the county cops in the parking lot, im not going to worry about doing that......ive done that too when my son ran in to get something quickly.......

i am sorry youre disabled in some ways, but your brain seems to work fine....why not start an awareness campaign or something......take all this energy and put it to some use that might make a difference and get to a bigger audience....

Every chance I get.  You can see the lackadaisical attitude some people have.  I kick ass when I can... one ass at a time :)

So it IS possible to break your back, not go to the doctor's for it AND still recover.

So just pointing out one CAN break one's back, not go to the doctors and NOT have to be incapacitated for 3 months or more.

juliet

It would depend on the type of break.  (I was a chiropractic assistant for 8 years in my life)

I am 1000000% in support of the real handicapped who need those spots but however, not all business need it but yet they are required to have them.

Look at Pen and Teller's Bullshit. They showed  an incident, where a handicapped lawyer when to a vacation town in northern california. The lawyer then proceeded to send a letter to each one of the businesses that were in the town telling them that either they cough up $10,000 dollars each or that he would sue them for twice that amount.

The ADA is designed to help those in need, not be a weapon for someone to make money,

I'm not making light of the issue, but I can't resist sharing a favorite get-well card I once saw (and sent).

It showed a car parked in a handicapped spot near a sign pointing to nearby Lourdes. The driver of the car was pleading with a cop who was writing him a ticket: "But when I parked here, officer, I was handicapped!"

I went down to the hospital to visit my doc today.  I have a HC conversion van I use that needs the "van accessible" type of spot.  I drove for 15 minutes around the vast lot looking for an open hcvan space.  No less than 5 cars in a ROW of  HC spaces had no identification showing they were entitled to the spots.  Security was cruising and I pointed it out for him to take car of the problem.  Yeah- right.  There was a plethora of regular parking spaces open and  actually closer than the HC spots to the hospital.

In Arizona they have just  upped the fine from $200 to $250 for illegal parking and $500 for a bogus placard.  What's really great is that there is also a dedicated phone line to report the idiots that park there and think they can get away with it.  An anonymous phone call made and all they want is the plate number and the location.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh the POWER!

So those coming to AZ- beware.  We are now "armed" and dangerous.  If you feel entitled to take a handicapped spot you are not entitled to.. ask yourself  "Do you feel lucky....Punk?"  Because I'm going to be a real bitch about it and it's gonna cost you.

And one last thing.. pray to God you never NEED an HC parking spot.

My dear...I invented something for blind people...it's required by federal mandate in all 50 states (and 11 different countries), and I also own as well, a (local) construction company wherein which one of the things my firm deals with is those very parking spaces that you mention.

When I see someone parking illegally in those stalls, even "for just a second"...I call the cops.

(And I stay there...with my digital camera shot of their license plate...until the cop gets there...no matter what my current schedule of appointments is).

And I demand they write a ticket.

You go ahead with that. And while you're doing that, my friends and I will be quietly pursuing the predator in the pickup who just snatched a UM that the cops are unable to chase down because they're busy busting those nefarious parking space bandits. I can see the headlines now "violent offenders set free to make room for those serving time under a mandatory sentencing law....their crime: PARKING.

I know a couple of professional athletes who have them, and understand that just about all professional athletes do.

True story: Last year I told a therapist that having to park far away for class stressed me out, because sometimes I leave campus after dark. He offered to get me a handicapped parking sticker.

Caitlyn, just carry a gun when you have to walk back to your car at night.
If you "get one" you'll be doing the public a favor!

I used to carry a Baretta Tomcat, but got to fire the old guys SigP229 and decided to steal it. Bigger, heavier, but far superior.

Here is another good one.... I don't know about elsewhere, but here in Arizona they have certain spots next to the handicap parking for expectant mothers!  Mind you I have been pregnant and know that later in a term some have difficulty walking... BUT.... as was my case... many women go to the mall TO walk and get the exercise.  Does anyone else see the irony in this?  And just how pregnant do you have to be to use it?  it just says expectant mother not expectant mothers already a week over due and about to pop.

Well you certainly live up to your name!

How lucky you are to able to "chase" other people.  For some people those spaces are needed for them to be able to go about their lives. I would never wish a disability on anyone but perhaps for a couple of minutes you should consider what it would be like to make plans to go shopping or to the bank, and please remember for someone with a disability it is often not just a matter of popping into the car and driving off, getting to where you are going and finding no spaces available because someone decided to be lazy and park in a designated space because they can't be bothered to walk a couple of extra yards making it impossible for them to be able to do the shopping they planned.

Some of us would love to be able to walk a couple of yards extra but that is just not an option we have.

Well thank you. :) I do try hard to live up to my name. Really it was more a matter of selecting a name that went with the image my friends saw in me. "Ass" has been a favorite term of endearment of my friends for awhile now.

Back on topic, you really can't play the "at least you can chase people and can walk a lil extra way" card with me. You can try, but you will not be successful. I'm not saying "yay" for anyone with a disability, not by a long shot. But the chair, the therapy, etc, it's all geared toward making those with disabilities able to function on their own like they once could. It's about minimizing their "handicap" and helping them live as normally as possible. Disabilities are to be overcome, not used as an excuse to pick on others. She's in a chair, that's unfortunate. If I could fix it for her, I'm sure I would. But I can't. What can I do? I can "not" focus on that. I can see her as a person and not a chair and treat her just like I would anyone else being so militant over something so benign. Do lazy asses exist? Yep. They're multiplying too. You can't stop that. All you can do is control how it affects you. I personally have never seen a situation where "every" single handi-space was taken by non-handicapped people. There's bound to be a spot or two there. And what? Because they're in a chair they should never have to deal with a space not being open? If I go to the mall on a busy shopping weekend, I can drive for 30 minutes and still find no spot. Why can't I rant? I'll tell you - it's because no one cares. So a chair does not automatically mean there will always be a spot. Being in a chair doesn't mean the world will bend over backwards to help either.

Not to mention the wholely separate fact that I have personally seen someone in a power chair zipping along the street, no car in sight. He can do it, why can't others? Why's it so hard for someone in a "POWER" chair to take up 2 spaces in the back of the lot and motor on in? There's almost never "no" spaces. If I were in a chair and some ass took the handi-space, I'd find 2 spaces next to each other and pull right into both of 'em. Wouldn't even think twice. Not everything has to be a "war." and every handicapped person doesn't need to be rescued.

The current Pa governor- was in hot water. his drivers drive 95-100 MPH on the interstaes. when one lost license the staff rotated.

i think it is funny he was caught.  on the other hand, my loved ones are on the highways! so get real!

we only recently raised the speed limit to 65 here. we are among the last states to do so. 55 mph was supposed to save fuel- and lessen our dependence on oil....

Not to mention the vulnerability of someone who is handicapped and in the process of loading and unloading themselves from their vehicle.  I think being able to be up close to the front of the establishment holds a bit more security.

As far as the athletes.. maybe it's one of those "invisible" injuries.  As long as they made an effort to get what they need- fine.  There will always be unscrupulous doctors with hero worship willing to "help out a buddy".

Again, my focus is on those with NO or Questionable ID attached to their vehicle when parked in the spot.

Oh. and Ass- your comments indicative of your name.  Just keep you Ass out of a handicap spot until you need one, and you'll be fine for we are are all only temporarily "able-bodied"

...sighs.....you're missing the point. It's not about disabled people, it's about non-disabled lazy arses who prefer to inconvenience disabled people rather than walk the few extra yards they're capable of.

if they would start towing those vehicles that are illegally parked like this, maybe people would finally get the message. but this is America...not many have a clue.

I think being up close to a building helps with EVERYONE'S security, not just the handicapped. When my mom goes to work (when she's not off for 6 weeks with surgery recovery) her assigned space is like 3 blocks away from where she works. ZERO security there. I think it's rediculous that a 55+ year old woman is shuttled out to a desolate area, far from witnesses, to get into her vehicle just because she 'can walk.'

As for where my ass will be, I CAN walk and I never park in a handi-space. However, I say that with the caveat that if my surgury-recovering mom needed to be closer...you're damned right she'd be as close to the door as I could get her, handi-space, fire lane or otherwise. If I had a 4x4, I'd pull up onto the curb too, I don't care. And anyone is MORE than welcome to write my license down or call the cops. As soon as my cell phone video of my mom's short, wincing steps is shown in court, it will be a slamdunk for my lawyers, and easily dismissed by the courts that have far more important things on their agenda then where one guy with an infirmed mom was parked for 5 minutes one day out of the year. (can you just HEAR my eyes rolling?)
