I always use the handicapped stall, I need the rail to help me get up with a bad knee and bad hip.  Someone once told me that was reserved for wheelchairs as I limped off. At home we have a riser on the seat.


I parked in a handicap spot once "only for a few minutes". I got ticketed and paid my fine. Lesson learned.
I use the handicap stall because it's much more room to...err..navigate when you're overweight. Of course, if there were someone less abled than myself waiting, I would gladly defer.

Status: offline 		We got a bunch of lazy-asses at work, that park in the handicap parking, because it is a shorter walk. They are  C-list employees , and they are undiagnosed mentally handicapped, I told them that. They did not like it.

Obviously she sees a doctor, does it not EVER cross your's or hers mind to ask the doctor for a slip to GET a permit?  Even if the thought occurs to you after you leave the office, CALL the doctor's office and ASK about it.  I hear there is this thing called "mail:" where they can send it directly to her house. 
 
There is a temporary permit for those that are only temporarily incapacitated.  Maybe you are so upset because you don't know how to get one.  Here's the info- act on it.  (I'm ready for the "I don't have time excuse". You MAKE time.  If that's the case.. save your pennies for the fines) 
 
No excuses.. NEXT!  (this is like shooting fish in a barrel)

not taking anything away from VETs, but i think they should do that in every state. they should also crack down on those people that aren't physically disabled, take away their placards/plates. It's not fair that just about anyone can get one...with the right doctor.


I agree with you so much on this.  That is MY rant when it comes to handicapped parking spaces.  My best friend is a dwarf.  She can walk just fine.  Can climb up on a barstool to drink too.  Yet, she has a handicapped tag, allowing her the "convience" of parking.  I fully believe it is things that that , which lead to others not respecting handicapped spaces.

Again, if you have a doctor, ask if you would qualify for a special permit because of your obesity.  If it is caused by a condition beyond your control and not self-inflicted, you might be able to get one.  Nothing ventured, nothing gained.  It will save you a headache in the long run.

Status: offline 		i am handicapped. i have a placard for when i ride with others and handicapped plates on my car. i do not, however LOOK like i am disabled and have many times been given grief about this. i had spinal cord cancer 4 times (so far) and standing, sitting, and walking are all painful for me. some days are better than others, but by parking in a handicapped spot i am often able to PREVENT having my pain get so bad it is no longer controllable by the many medications i take daily just to deal with pain.
just because a person LOOKS fine, or even WALKS fine at that moment it does not mean they do not NEED that parking space. no one can see the scars on my back just looking at me, nor can they tell from looking that i have almost no feeling below the waist.
in my state (georgia) a doctor's certificaton is required to get these plates and placards, and they must be renewed with a new certification every 2 to 4 years. believe it or not, doctors do not pass these things out like lolipops either!

Wow, are you serious? Only people who had no part in their disability should qualify? Is the motorcyclist who is hit in an intersection and paralyzed less deserving because he was undertaking in an activity that carried more risk? What about a skateboarder? A survivor of a suicide attempt? Someone with AIDS?

Did I misunderstand?

I/we agree with you.  We've covered that issue in the several pages of this thread.  My focus is on those with nothing on their vehicle indicating HC status. 
 
General comment here:  I just got off the phone with MVD here in Phoenix.  I asked them if there are other ways to get your placard and plate without having to go down to the MVD and here is what she said:
 
YES.  You need the MVD form and you get it by either- actually going down to the MVD OR calling and having them send one to your home OR downloading it by your computer from their website.
 
You then take this form TO your DOCTOR (don't try to forge it, they are wise to that) who will fill it out for you and you then either Take it down to the MVD and upon presentation you will get both plate and placard or you mail it in and they will SEND your plate and placard to your home.  So there goes the "no time to go to the MVD" excuse.

Status: offline 		LotusSong:  thank you for this topic...i don't need nor do i use the HC spaces, but it's a subject dear to my heart...i don't even park in the non-handicapped spaces which are near the doors of a business because someone who has difficulty walking distances might need those...while my foot was broken, i needed to be closer to the entrances & i also needed to use the electric carts for shopping inside the stores...it's the kind of break that they don't immobilize, so it wasn't a visible disability, except that i would limp...i found that most people were very kind & helpful to me...i also shop at a store where there are "elderly" spots next to the HC spaces & i use those when i'm in a lot of pain & can't walk far or easily, since at 61 i do qualify for those...
i think that the real issue for me is that a lot of people are so self-involved that there is little empathy or compassion shown to others...if people could put themselves into a headspace where they could understand others' difficulties in life & then act in a way that would ease those difficulties, we would all be so much happier...when i help someone who needs it, i feel better & so do they...so i guess i do it out of selfishness a bit:  because it lightens my day & my life.....

Good point and well taken. 
 
Accidents are accidents- can't help those.  Suicide?  I dunno.. self-inflicted behavior again? 
 
Obesity is a difficult one because it's so stigmatized.  That's why I say get the doctor's opinion.
 
This is just my opinon and still thinking through your comments though :)

Status: offline 		i am legally blind. i do have some limited sight, and can manuver in areas i know, but a parking lot changes from moment to moment and as loud as they can be i cannot always hear what direction it is coming from or how close a vehicle is to me, so i use the handicap parking. i have one of those mirror hangers because they refuse to give a drivers license to a blind person (go figure). most who see me in the store (one i go to all the time) have no idea i have limited vision. i use the spots because they are usually closer to the building, which means i dont have to run the gammit of the people pulling in or backing out and that makes it less likely that i will end my days as a road-pizza in a Wal-Mart parking lot.
i can walk the distance, it is not my legs that i have trouble with, but the other, sighted, people who refuse to pay attention to what is going on around them.
i have even had some who see me walking down the street with my long, white, red tipped cane and just stand in my way, then bitch when they get smacked with it, (it can hurt, across the ankles) HELLO? dark glasses, long white cane? move!
