Handicap Parking spot rant - 7/10/2007 1:01:18 PM

I went down to the hospital to visit my doc today. I have a HC conversion van I use that needs the "van accessible" type of spot. I drove for 15 minutes around the vast lot looking for an open hcvan space. No less than 5 cars in a ROW of HC spaces had no identification showing they were entitled to the spots. Security was cruising and I pointed it out for him to take car of the problem. Yeah- right. There was a plethora of regular parking spaces open and actually closer than the HC spots to the hospital.

In Arizona they have just upped the fine from $200 to $250 for illegal parking and $500 for a bogus placard. What's really great is that there is also a dedicated phone line to report the idiots that park there and think they can get away with it. An anonymous phone call made and all they want is the plate number and the location.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh the POWER!

So those coming to AZ- beware. We are now "armed" and dangerous. If you feel entitled to take a handicapped spot you are not entitled to.. ask yourself "Do you feel lucky....Punk?" Because I'm going to be a real bitch about it and it's gonna cost you.

And one last thing.. pray to God you never NEED an HC parking spot.

I'm on your side, Lotus. Whenever I see a sheriff park in one of those, I tell them they have to at least fake a limp.

The only time I have ever parked in a HC spot is when taking my Grandma to the doctors or other such place, (though recently she usually uses her WC, so no point.) And I borrow the review mirror sign.

Ah ha Lotus! I am one of the weirdos that prefer to park clear out in the far reaches of a parking lot. Less door dings on the vehicles and more exercise for my butt.

I also despise the lazy mofo's that like to keep someone sitting in the car, in the fire lane, while they run inside to shop. God forbid they walk an extra step.

Of course those that abuse these things would be one of the first to jump up, scream and shout about others doing it if they were the ones needing those spots. (not that it applies to you, I just know how the lazy folks that take advantage, tend to be....)

Exactly. As long as the person it is assigned to the placard is IN that vehicle, then it's permitted.

I also hate it when people park in those spaces illegally. That said, I have been thinking of asking my doc for a handicap sticker until I get my hip replacement. The problem isn't walking, I can walk a long ways with my limp; it's opening the car doors wide enough to get in and out. I need the door all the way open and in many parking spots you can't do that.

This is sort of related to the topic....recently on our local radio talk show, they did a segment about people who were legally handicapped and had the license plate, but since they did not APPEAR visibly handicapped, people were stopping them and giving them a really hard time about it, even when they showed their card. One was a girl in her early 20's who had a serious heart problem and had both a pacemaker and some other device inplanted in her body. The local cop wouldn't believe her, even with handicapped ID.

The gist of the show was that there are handicaps that aren't apparent visually, and we should not assume that every one who is using the placard but who appears healthy is trying to cheat the system.

Unfortunately, there are so many who do, it makes it really bad for the ones who do need to use it.

I'm always amused by the fact that the fine for parking in a handicapped spot is at least three times as much as the fine for parking in front of a fire hydrant.

She needs to get a letter from her doctor to carry with her. If there is still a problem (in case the officer is a COMPLETE idiot), she can present him with the phone number of her attending physician. I'd ask for a direct line to the doctor for this purpose in this sort of urgency, like his personal cell phone number.

If all else fails, let him give her a citation, then she can educate the jerk on her court date in front of a judge.

There is a solution, merely make those who park there without proper ID handicapped.
Easy enough to take out a leg or two.

I'm someone who generally parks further away just so I do have to walk. I have legs..
and I'm not afraid to use them. Someday I may not be able to...so I'm taking full advantage while I
can.

I get hostile looks when I use my card. Hey- I am legal- one old guy even wrote down my license plate number at teh grocery store. I was so fricken mad! Duh- many states have the disabled IN THE LICENSE PLATE! hence that is why i dont have to display the placard- as it is on my plate.

my car is getting junkier- last time i squeezed in where a new car took 2 spaces. grrr.

If handicapped people had the right to do this to a car illegaly parked in a marked space, perhaps the fines wouldn't be so high.

LaM.....actually, the fine isn't the problem when one parks in front of a hydrant.....it's the resulting damage to the vehicle when the FD breaks out the window, runs the hose THRU the car, causing all sorts of damage. It really happens....it's not just a TV thing! OOPS...just saw stef's post...ya gotta love it!!!!

I know for a fact that in Scottsdale, AZ, the cops LOVE to nail people who park in handicapped zones......all it takes is one call to the PD, and they will try to get there when they can.....I know they also swing thru parking lots randomly just to check. I worked at a hospital there, and all I had to do was call, and either their little parking maid would get them, or if an officer was in the area, he'd do it....lots of times it was doctors or staff who were too lazy to park in THEIR reserved spots and walk 100 feet to the door. Then they'd call Security to whine because they got the ticket.....I even told a couple of them once that I was the one who called the cops on them! They don't call me the Evil One for nothing!

Meh, sometimes handicapped parking spots are completely irrational. For instance, at my work, they have at least 10 handicapped parking spots out of ~200 spaces, 4 of which are limited for vendors (the guys who refill the candy/soda machines) to use. When was the last time you saw a guy in a wheelchair stocking a vending machine?

No, NO, windchymes, YOU ARE WRONG...if you are NOT appearing physically handicapped, but have all the necessary cards, IDs, Placards...YOU MUST APPEAR HANDICAPPED...the cop should have wrestled her to the ground, pulled out his boot knife, and slit her stem to stern...if he discovered she was telling the truth, then..."opps; sorry, go about your business; do you need a hand".

If not, then fine her, arrest her sorry ass.

Here, in NV, they have a 500 dollar fine for parking in a handicap parking area illegally; some have a 1000 dollar fine. They have also, a 'Police Volunteer' group; retired citizens who have the same power to arrest, and issue tickets as does the police, except they are not armed, equipped with radio dispatch. The vehicle in question is photographed from all four sides, in the illegal status, they issue the fine, attach it to the windshield.

Once I parked, illegally in a handicap parking area in a hospital zone. I was bring a friend to the hospital who was in need of immediate urgent care, I'm talking life threatening. I was told to move the car. I don't think this would apply to this OP.

I have a "Disabled American Veterans" sticker on the back of my car so I can use a handicapped spot if I need to but I don't.
Not unless I'm in a lot of pain that day.
I usually park away from the entrance and walk.

is that a nationwide number? email me the number if it is, please. my gf's van is equiped with a lift and requires the Van excessible spots, yet we find alot of times that there are cars parked there...or motorcycles parked in the blue striped zones, making it difficult to park.

Here in Georgia, it seems anyone can go to the Dr.'s office and get a request for a placard or handicapped plate, even if they are physically able to walk the distance.

i am on disability myself, but my disability is not physical, so i do not need or want the placards/plates for myself and, if i'm driving alone, never use those spots for the very reason that someone with a handicapped van wil need those spots. If i can't walk the distance, i won't bother going.

Is that something issued by the state? Here in Michigan you are not allowed to park in a handicapped parking spot, even with a state issued DAV plate, unless your disability is certified to impair your ability to walk.
