Navy, no disrespect to you, but whose land do you think it was before the Turks took it ? The Romans had a name for it something like Philistia and the original English name was Philistine.

Or, the Romans gave it the name Palaestina after they massacred the Jews living there, as an added insult?

http://www.pbs.org/empires/romans/empire/josephus.html

The Philistines were there long before the Romans came on the scene. I cant see what the Romans have to do with the anything. I dont doubt what you say but its irrelevant to the Palestinian question.

Actually the phillistines were extinct long before the Romans conquered, The only real name that has stuck through the millenia is Judaea and Sumeria. Juadaea referring to the fact that the Jews lived there. And if you want to go back in time, yes various Arab kingdoms(none of which resemble the modern countries with the the possible exception of Egypt) but before that you had the Kingdom of Israel. that rules for over 1000 years, and before that there was no one ruler. There were over 40 small kingdoms spread out throughout the area(not just in current Israel, but stretching all the way into Iran and Saudi Arabia.

How the hell did a thread on globalization vs isolationism degenerate into this tired old arguement about who's land it is in israel/palestine?

Guess it was a fantasy to believe that this thread could stay on track, with decent discussion.

Can everyone agree that the "business as usual" politics, no matter which party, is not working? The politicians are not going to fix anything, we have to fix the politicians first.

lol

Simple solution.  We give a chunk of the desert in New Mexico to the Israelis.  There are vast stretches we're not using.  The Israelis are used to the desert climate.  In 20 years they'll turn it into the Garden of Eden.

We air lift them over.  Give Palestine back to the Palestinians.  Everyone is happy.

Except maybe the Iranians, who will now have to build bigger missiles to reach the Jews.

Orion, you nailed it!
The policies of the last 50 years are obviously not working.
DS Writer, that's part of the problem, that "give" type of thinking.
Every country looks to the U.S. with that "gimme, gimme" philosophy and look where it's gotten us.

"Globalisation" is great if you're a Big Corporation.
Of course they're the ones that wanted and engineered it not The People!
It's just no good if you're an ordinary person.
Plunging salaries and wages, cut throat competition, H1b visa workers taking your job for half the money, plenty of jobs with no benefits or long term security, people with master's degrees working at Home Depot and Starbucks, the list could go on for quite a bit!
People actually work for $7 an hour these days. I made almost that for loading trucks in 1975!
And for what? "Cheap" consumer goods from China?
I'll take the pre globalisation higher pay and no Walmarts and a lot less "consuming", thankyou very much.

Imperialism I guess.

Which is the irony of globalisation on the part of America. As long as America has been top dog it has not had a problem with its type of globalisation, ie. imperialism but now there are rivals on the horizon in the shape of China, India and Russia, it doesn't seem to like it. Such timidity to me smacks of lack of confidence and decline.

As for other former imperial powers, France has never liked globalisation or imperialism at its own expense either, Germany gave up trying after obvious disasters but to be fair to Britain, it has embraced globalisation and has thrived on it.

Illiteracy, I guess... apparently someone read 'what should America do in the future?', and it came through their synapses as 'What did Britain do wrong 50 years ago?'.

Or maybe they have built a time machine in their garage, and want to use this thread to explain how they are going to fix everything.

DSwriter,
Well you can add the Jews to the list of people who will unhappy. Israel is not just a country to Jews. It is the very center of our religion, going back to God's promise to Abraham. The hope of our return to Zion it what kept the Jewish religion alive during the exile. When East Jerusalem was liberated in 1967 the soldiers ran past the military structures, ran past strategic positions, ran past abandoned Jordanian military equipment. They had one goal in mind, to be the first Jews since 1948 to see the Western Wall up close. It is not just a country, it is not just a tangible peace of land, In Jewish daily prayers the two most Common words are Peace and Israel. It is who we are.

and to the poster who said that it was Carter who got the sides to sit down and talk. Carter had nothing to do with that, he just hosted it at Camp David, Begin and Sadat brought themselves together. and it was just Egypt and Israel. No one else was involved.

Wait till China and other countries try to "collect" their outstanding "debt" from the U.S.
We can't afford to be giving money to foreign countries because,.....we don't have the money.
It's just more outstanding "debt" that will never be repaid.

China; "You pay your Bill or no ticky no shirty!"
U.S.; "Hey Hop-Sing, do you have a word in Chinese for "Bankrupt?" lol kind of makes you wonder who's taking advantage of who.

No one has a right to a homeland....It is bullshit...Israel is nothing more than a puppet state supported by the US to the tune of $600.00 per citizen...When you count all of the unpaid loans and interest it amounts to hundreds of billions of dollars.

Yes they are a democracy...and an ally ....And yes they provide the US with a jumping point should it be necessary.....

Do they provide the US with goodwill in the Middle East?...Are we accountable for their actions?...When you way the positives with the negatives is the State of  Israel a benefit to the US?...Probably they are....If a vote was available to the citizens of this country to support them at our current rate....I wonder what the outcome of that vote would be?

What should America do? Isolationism or Globalism?

.......i'd suggest that the problem is implied in how the question is set out, (sorry Level), it's not about whether the US retreats into isolationism or whether it leads the world into a brighter tomorrow because it isn't just up to America. In my opinion the one real problem the US has lies in believing that the fate of the world is in its hands. All countries need to have a say, all cultures and religions, because we all have to live on a spinning ball of limited size and resources. Once America as a whole realises that the rest of the world has a valid opinion then its foreign policy will work better for America.

Philosophy, they can have all the opinions they want, good luck to them!
But as an American Taxpayer I shouldn't be paying for them.
I have two things that I want when it comes to dealing with foreign countries; "No Troops", "No Money."
