Who do you think serves now people with an MIT education, Princeton or Yale,Hell no its those that can't find work or afford school or using the military to be able to attend,SO don't spoon feed me your bullshit.A draft makes it fair for all americans..bounty I see your point, BOUNTYHUNTER, although I am a bit puzzled why you responded to me with such venom. I do think that rich and poor alike should all be required to do something to prove their service to the body politic. I am simply not certain that forcing them into the military is a workable solution from the perspective of the military. My point is that our military no longer needs cannon fodder. We could draft everybody, then what? We only need so many security guards, military police, water carrier drivers, people to stand roadblocks in the Green Zone, etc. What we need in the military are highly skilled technicians with RF equipment, computer expertise, satellite training, medical professionals, diesel mechanics, aeronautics technicians, people trainable to use UAVs, etc. The education package going back to World War 2 promoted bringing intelligent and skilled people into the military. AnencephalyBoy showed everybody that when a dim-wit warmonger is elected, the military is not required to fulfill their side of the contract, and anybody who signed the contract as a volunteer is simply fucked. As I have pointed out, the war AnencephalyBoy got us in to is exactly the sort of war a draft would be beneficial for. I say this with the same sort of jaundice that pointing out our operations in Vietnam and Korea were the same thing. I have made the point that Iraq was a bad idea. Instituting a draft to try to fix the bad idea is a lousy solution and makes our military less viable in the future should we ever elect leaders intelligent enough to stand up and decide to stop babysitting Iraqis.
