Well, in response the the OP's basic concept, here's my 2p:
It is highly situational.
I will speak now in terms of age range/difference.
A submissive significantly younger is like a ripe peach. They may be fresh, and firm, and sweet, but in the end they won't usually make for a satisfying meal.
A submissive in the same age range (I go ten years in either direction, as a general rule) can still be firm and sweet, but they have the richness of shared life experiences that put them in the realm of a nice cut of meat. (granted, if a steak is not handled properly, it can be a very bad thing, and the analogy applies here too.)
A submissive significantly older (and here I'm dragging out a chesnut) is like a bottle of wine. They can be rich, and sweet, and utterly pleasing, or they can have been improperly handled and turn bitter. And of course, not everyone can appreciate some wine, no matter how excellent the vintage.

Ill agree with defiant, young hard bodies and minds not jaded with baggage of failed relationships...sometimes a blanker slate is easier to work with

Ahh hell, i'll play devil's advocate here... let's face it we ALL have some baggage... even if it's that it's a youngster who thinks he/she knows it all...

*Especially* the youngster who thinks he/she knows it all. I'm afraid to google my early (c.1997) usenet posts. Maybe not so much baggage, but there's a whole lot of drama there! And I was even more young and nubile back then... <shudders>

i understand what it is now that i have wanted to say. while they may have text book knowledge they lack the meaning or emotional meaning to put things into motion to make solid bonds between older and younger peeps. it is in that where life experince plays the critical part

I agree. And I have more life experience when it comes to dating and forming relationships than some people twice my age. I know 30 year old men who have never had a girlfriend and are utterly misterable when it comes to forming solid bonds with people. It's why I get asked for advice on the subject by people older than me.

When it comes to forming solid relationships, it really is a "move at your own pace" thing. Some of us learn at accelerated rates. Others fall behind and catch up later.

Amen.

Hows about those 50 year olds that have never had a long term relationship or been married (depending on that person's preference)?  If they are not self proclaimed bachelors/bachelorettes, then what kind of skills do they have over us, that are in long standing relationships at our ages?

Honey, you obviously missed the "want to be used as a toilet fetish" thread or "where do I get instructions on setting my sub on fire" thread. LOL

Thank you, DelRay for that one.

Well, my Dom is impressed with my "no drama, no baggage" approach, even with the hiccups in some relationship skills.

I'm 48 and have 2 long term relationships under my belt....er cuffs....er, you know what I mean.   Moved around a lot between career and school, which put a cramp in my love life to some extent.

Self-awareness and comfort with kink being equal: younger, obviously.

I'm still relatively young, but even I've come up against men older than me who are looking only for subs in the 18-24 age range. It rather confuses and annoys me, and also makes me worry about the future...I'm fine for now, and probably until my mid-30's, but after that how easy/difficult will it be to find partners?

Doms (and Dommes) seem to go up in 'value' with age...subs, not so much, in my observation. Again, makes me sad, I hope I'm proven to be wrong in this assessment.

I have the same approach.  And I'm 24.  I don't let the bullshit I dealt with in the past paint what I do now.  I've moved on to better things and a better life.  I don't let my mental rape and my physical one dictate how I live my life now.  I'm the sanest, healthiest, and happiest I've ever been.  He knows my past, but that is all there is to it.  It's not something that rears it's ugly head anymore.  I'm not pushed to points in my sanity by the one that says they love me.  He loves me, truly, and has helped me with just his presence to move on.  He's not my therapist, my psychologist, nor does he try.  He's my zen partner and it just radiates off of him onto me.
