Good people are hard to find.  To me its all about attitude if a person if unskilled in my field but has the right attitude i will take the time to train them.  I have ran ads,  getting only 1 person calling and that person was high.  I have found a way to make the whole interviewing process better for me.  I meet the people for dinner and talk to them there, that way i at least can have a good meal if nothing else.  Being a person who came up through the ranks in my field to owning the company, i know what the people go through in the field. The company is the highest paying company in this field of service  in the area we wher i live.  For 8 people,  the last payroll was over $21,000 for a 2 week period.  Even paying this kind of money out, it is extreamly hard to find people that will show up to work every day  with the right attitude and get the work done with the high quality standard expected of them.

Good people are hard to find!

Eric

Id work for you Eric.......

On my last job interview, the guy heading the panel complimented me on my tie.  I told him he could have it.

It sounds like you are running into the solid wall of an entitlement mentality.  I'd suggest narrowing down how you seek applicants, and maybe putting their attitude above experience.  Try passing the word about openings at low cost day care centers or through churches that do drug rehab or sober living work.  Find people who want better than what they have now.  I've even heard of employers giving cards to fast-food workers who seem motivated.  Plenty of people on unemployment only interview so they can keep that check coming in another week.

Your premise is a bit off in the thread title.  These are the problems of a LOW unemployment economy.

WOW just WOW this person gives their experience in how poor the pool of applicants she gets are today and folks want to turn it around on the employer.
The Employer doesn't make people late. (unless they are interviewing on their lunch hour)
The Employer doesn't dress the person for the interview.
The Employer doesn't in fact have much of an effect at all on any of those things that the OP mentioned as being problems.

The job belongs to the employer. don't believe it? If the employee goes away does the employer still have to fill the job?, If the company goes away is employee still working at that job?

Best advise I can give anyone concerning college is to go in with the mindset that the purpose is to give you an education, not necessarily a high salary. Unless you are a doctor or lawyer, there is no gurantee you will make any more money than the manager at your local McDonalds.

Also, expand your skills. Become a jack of all trades. This is easier to do when young than older. But this gives you many back-ups. I know one guy who makes $60,000 a year doing a system admin for a few companies. He does not have a computer degreee. His degree is in History. But while he was in college, he stocked up on computer certifications and took a bunch of tests. He's got a half dozen certs. He also has years of work experience in hospitality, retail, and food service management. He can literally get any job anywhere he wants.

The employer doesn't have much of an effect if the person's last job went away because of piss poor management, and crooked greedy executives?
The employer isn't to blame if the person had to deal with incompetent coworkers gaming a system just begging to be taken advantage of?
The employer isn't at fault if the applicant is responding to a misleading or poorly written help wanted ad?

Sorry, but in the real world, it is both employers, and employees to blame.

employees- umm. well pay a man/woman a fair days wafe for a fair dasy work.   the peon worker has been downsized outsourced, depensioned, and viewed as disposable. hence: many take on the same "non-allegience" to the employer.  no so shocking really.

as for a slothfull culture- im sure we are more slobbish now as compared to past generations.

employers also want someone already trained- and has never had a personality conflict- and no gaps in employment.

my brother screwed out of his pension by 2 months.  [2 months!!!!]

at the same time- you have CEOS with golden parachuts. if you hurt yourself at work- you are baggage. a trouble maker.

then there are places that combine 2-3 jobs so as to not have to pay the expense of ample position. with the focus on "emergency" mode- afteer a while every day is an emergency. thus- good staff reaches the breaking point.

i seen an ad around 88 that said no job hoppers.  excuse me?   a bank can change their name every year and fake like they are upstanding pillars of community.

at one time a CEOs pay was 68x the rate of the lowest paid worker.

did i mention pensions?  any that exist are underfunded.   when i build houses they loved the guys to work or go to jail for child support. guys that had car payments and HAD to work. management would purposely make them angry- and the men would swing the hammers harder that day- improving production. [in theory]

it is nothing peronal- but the almighty corporation- is reaping what it has sowed.

i hereby award myself pahunks informal post of the day award. congrats to me,

PaHunk, that's true about Banks.
When I lived in N.H. my bank changed hands twice in four years!
Some banking giant from Rhode Island bought them out the last time. (Fleet?)
They're not "community banks" anymore.
When I applied for a job at a large national insurance company years ago in the interview process I told the lady that I had a bachelors degree in business administration.
Her reply; "that's nice."
All she wanted to talk about was what I did in the USCG.
And after I was hired the training director told me; "forget all that college bullshit, we're going to teach you our way."
And, the people who made the most money in that company didn't even have degrees.
They were salesmen and saleswomen and many of them made $2-$300k per year, very good money in the 1980's!
Nice to make $6,000 to $8,000 per week.
The really "big" money is in sales!
Of course I showed up for my interview 30 minutes early and very well dressed in suit and tie.

They dont teach interviewing, resume-writing, or career skills in schools anymore. And now that "generation Y" is entering the job force, It's starting to show.

It doesn't take much common sense to know that you shouldn't use the words "immature asshole" in a job interview.

yeah lets talk about family values. !

pay a man/woman a fair days wage for a fair days work.

PA is a "right to work" state.

i dont mean to sound bitter- but as a kid- unlces and neighbors would work 30 yrs same plant. and get a pension.  401k is a joke, not really a pension- it is window dressing.

if life were a game of chess - most of us would be pawns.

serfs, fuedal days are here again.

even folks that are satidifed with their job situatiuon know they are but a merger away from a pink slip. they dont dare post blogs critcising their company or industry.  it is the kiss of death,

There is a reason why they say that 'If work were such a good thing, the rich would keep it for themselves and not let us have any'.

The overall unemployment rate for the state of Michigan is 7.2% with some counties reporting over 11%. Michigan reported the highest unemployment rate in the country in July.

Thank you. The tone of the answers on this thread gives me a greater perspective on the reason I am having such difficulty. I have to wonder if anyone here would have hired these people if it were THEIR business.

I would not have hired them based on what you said about them.

Although when I was in charge of hiring and firing, I would be seeking technically qualified applications.  I did not care how they dressed, being late to an interview would result in them being invited to leave without the interview taking place, and if they were willing to work their 8 hours coding Korn scripts between 9pm and 5am, I never really had a problem with how they organized their day.  I was hiring them to do a job.

I would insist on seeing their work.

There are dozens of threads complaining about how bad the employers are, you can find them here pretty easy throw a sitck any direction you'll hit scores of posts complaining about that side of the argument. What you see (at least here) far less often is the other side of the coin the challanges of finding an employee that is worth a damn.
Sure Employers have their faults, but to take the 1 in 20 posts about employment that adresses the empoyers side of the coin and within 2 or 3 replies turn it also into one of the miriad of Bash the Employers threads, that's piss poor.
