You know....given that every thread we have on "safety" degrades down to a series of pages of posts consisting of...

"This is true."
"No, thats not true. This expert said this."
"That expert never said that."
"No, I dont agree with that expert. Its really like this..."
"Your all wrong...that cant happen"

I cant possibly understand why anyone in their right mind would actually come here to learn about safety.

Relying on these board for safety instruction is like relying on high-school gym locker room talk for safe sex tips.

These boards might help frame safety questions, but the best answers to those questions lie out in the real world, not here.

Since there's nothing remotely like empirical evidence available about this, people just make this stuff up as it suits them.  Sometimes you hear that self-bondage is the leading cause of death.  Other times it's breath play.  Still other times it's rope.  I don't think anyone knows jackshit about the real statistics.

According to Jay Wiseman, breath play is the leading cause of death in the fetish community.

Yes.  Again, I'd like to know how many people are estimated to engage in bondage. One would think you'd want to know something like that before you can determine if it's the leading cause of accident or not.

In my *observation* it has been. But that's just my observation and where I happen to be at what time.

It's mainly autoasphyxiation, isn't it? That would involve rope, bondage and breath play.

In this regard it's not different than any 3-d Dungeon, event, party, or group of 3 perverts standing around comparing notes that I've ever been around.

I think that kinda leads to a recent thread on common sense. My personal opinion is that the more common sense you have and the more you use it, the less your going to get hurt. At least it makes sense to me.........

Lol, thats a good point. I never really pay attention when I go out in public. I have a few people that I direct my questions to and listen to and thats it. I'm highly selective on who I ask for help from.

At least in real time I am dealing with physical beings who experience and history I can validate by asking around as opposed to here where I am dealing with theortical entities.

wilfulcontrol -> RE: Whips and 'Accidents' (9/8/2007 4:20:17 PM)

A former coworker was going through his fraternity's final initiation ritual when they all got whipped by a moron with a single-tail, who tore off several pledges' skin and finally removed flesh from someone's ear before his brothers stopped him.

i don't come here to learn about safety, i come here to read the posts and kill some time. Maybe meet some new people. If i want to learn safety about bdsm or anything else, i go to someone i trust in the community or attend classes and events.

I choose who to take seriously here the same way I choose who to take seriously in a real life setting. I look at their actions (here it would be to read their posts) look for consistancy, and even then take my own stance on the idea. Things that make me think that person should not be listened too, one line flames, claiming absolute knowledge, overall cocky attitude, the list goes on.

The ones that I realy pay attention to, LA (even though I disagree with her post on this thread) LaTigress, Grlwithboy, Domiguy (although I use the bullshit-o-meter with his posts and have to wade throught the sarcasm), MasterFireMaam, Aquaticsub, etc.

DominaSmartass -> RE: Whips and 'Accidents' (9/9/2007 2:21:01 PM)

yes I would...in fact I consider it more  "dangerous" as burns tend to leave "deeper" wounds than singletails. People don't generally know exactly how hot something is...then again my father was a firefighter and I'm paranoid.

Now, I generally do agree to some extent about the whip thing, that there is no reason why people need to be afraid of using a whip or practice for some number of years on a pillow before hitting a human (as many I've come actually will profess to being so) but THIS (in regards to waxplay) is just getting ludicrous.

The only real danger with waxplay is if you are using a candle that burns at a much hotter temp than you should be. Something like a chemically enhanced candle, perhaps. But given any suitable candle, there is absolutely no variation in temperature from one drip to the next (of course changes in the height of the drop not withstanding) and the maximum temperature IS the maximum temperature and will not burn the skin no matter how carelessly it is thrown. Unlike a whip which has a great degree of variability to do anywhere from no damage, slight damage, all the way up to extreme damage based on the skill and intention of the thrower.  If I give ANYONE on earth a wax candle that I know to be safe for play I would trust them to drip it on me and not leave any burn. Not true at all when speaking of whips.  So yeah, you have to make sure that you're using a candle that's made out of primarily parafin and test the temp before going all out, but once that wax is melted, that's it, it's as hot as it's going to get.  The real danger in waxplay might be that someone knocks over the candle and sets the house on fire though...

SweetSarijane -> RE: Whips and 'Accidents' (9/9/2007 4:27:56 PM)

I think it all comes down to common sense and being aware of the actual risks for whatever kink or activities you choose to indulge in. Don't just take someone else's word for how dangerous or safe something is. Check it out for yourself. Google it, talk to several who have done it, find books about it, do your own investigating and find out for yourself rather than just depending on what someone on or offline says about something. That's what I've done and continue to do. I read here, read books, talk to people, observe, etc. and make my choice then.
