As so often, Ron, I think I get your point.   And you're completely right about this not being a war.  That's just a convenient word.  We've got another never-ending police action, killing about 1000 of ours a year (the snarky and persnickety may feel free to add the contractor numbers) and sending some multiple of that home, permanently broken and providing about the same level of crap care we always have.  Fuck, at least the Civil War vets got a nice heroin prescription.

Their glorious mission is to keep Al Qaeda from having a parade.

So fucking what.  We leave, go isolationist in the NAU, maybe you get to die before the KU gets delivered, and if the Mexican embalmer does a crappy enough job, you might be all the way gone before this not so nice in a pinch country takes total war into the 21st Century.

Maybe it's inevitable anyway and we should all spend the remaining time drinking wine and artfully combining fishing and blowjobs.  My Magic-8-Ball needs batteries.

The isolationist phrase in particular, or everything from that point on?

I just see a withdrawal of our interests worldwide as a consequence of a walkaway/retreat/surrender.  Organic.   And a political union will make it a lot easier to draft a lot of brown people to handle the bleeding.

g'night

I am no longer registered as a Democrat.  The only reason I registered the last election was to vote for Marcy Winograd over that warmonger bitch Boxer.

Now I am back over in the liberal, progressive, left wing, granola eating, whale saving, lunatic fringe where I belong.

It is my great hope that, someday.. republicans will vote the will of the people rather than their own political agenda.

Bin Ladin orders Bush to withdraw troops from Saudi Arabia.

Bush refuses.

Bin Ladin pulls off the attacks on 9/11.

Bush removes troops from Saudi Arabia.

Looks like Bush PROVED the US *CAN* be pushed around by directed violence.

And while we *can* fight, why did we go fight someone who wasn't involved with Bin Ladin and 9/11?

And why are we STILL there, fighting a fight we didn't need in the first place?

I wish facts would persuade you but I know they won't but they might others.

If the Dems actually gave a shit about how often the troops are rotated in, instead of just wanting to keep the news cycle occupied, they would be trying to build a larger Army.  It's very possible I missed such a proposal though.

Dems introduced draft bills any number of times, Republicans killed them.

And wars have turned into slogging bloodbaths for a long time too.
is that before or after "mission accomplished" or before the non existent insurgency existed, or what?

quote:

Our leadership's definition of 'mission' has changed a bunch of times and suffers from flawed vision.

Just what exactly do you think it means that the "mission" has changed over and over again?  When a person does that, we know that all the surface reasons are BS and they have a hidden or unconcious agenda.  Why do YOU think the mission keeps changing?

quote:

The enemy's is quite clear.  Prove to the masses that the US can be pushed around by random violence, that we lack the testicular fortitude to fight.

Pushed around how and what exactly are we fighting them over?  The Arabs are so pathetic they can't defeat Israel so as a threat to me, I can't help but just giggle.

quote:

I'll take as "Victory" pretty much anything that denies that claim to them (best case, one that gets our guys the fuck out of there).

Define in clear terms what you see as the least possible acceptable "victory" AND what you would be willing to pay in numbers of dead troops and debt.

quote:

I believe the price of giving them that will be far higher than we ever want to pay.

What are we "giving them" exactly?  Everything we have done has strengthened our enemies and undermined our allies.  China and Iran are stronger for our fucking up, Al Queda is stronger and has more support than ever.  Our allies have distanced themselves from us.  We are massively in debt.  The troops are being overused, we are losing the best people and recruiting the worst, Pakistan is weaker than ever, radicals all over the ME are empowered and moderates undermined by our actions.  So again, what exactly are we "giving them" that they don't want?

Actually the Dems introduced 1 draft bill to bring back the draft, in 2004.  If by Republicans killing it, you mean they brought it to the floor for a vote, where it lost 402-2, even its sponsor voted against it.  Apperantly Rangle is trying again, but the Dems controll the congress these days.  And the larger Army Rich refers to was not based on a draft, but our volunteer army before Clinton and the Democratic Congress took thier "Peace Dividend".

Actually I do not think the mission has changed one bit.  The stated purpose of the entire "War on Terror", of which Iraq is just one front, is to change the situation in the Mid east.  "we are going to stop swatting mosquitos and drain the swamp", something close to that.   And that can not happen untill there is a change in Tehran.

While I'm quite convinced that when the draft returns, it will be the Democrats that bring it, that wasn't what I asked for, Simply.  Were they calling for a draft to fill the ranks of another 10 brigades of combat arms?

We have x number of ground troops in the budget.  Have they attempted to increase that  number?  Or have they merely been spouting talking points to stir up yet more of the partisan division they think is good for them?  And if they really want to, why haven't they?  They have the Federal Wallet back in their pocket.

After all the bullshit and lies fed to us about how IRAQ was such a fucking danger, how could you believe that ANYONE would be so damn stupid to BELIEVE anything being said now?

I don't think the 600 dead since the surge began would agree.

But then again, they're dead because you didn't bring them home, so I'd suggest that you don't give a shit about them much anyway....

I already gave you "flawed vision," Simply, are you trying to draw me into a Bush-bash?  That's as close as you are going to get for another 15-odd months.  Don't take too much comfort from that, 'cuz while I will possibly scorch the ears of daily Huffington Post readers, I'll always end my rant with "and the stupid-ass Left just played politics."
