I agree with your post, but please spear a thought about the few who English isn’t their mother language. [:)]

You show me a language that uses commas the way the quoted bit of email did, and I will buy that.  I have seen ellipses done with commas and not periods, as a cultural thing. But as far as I know, the grand majority of those who are not native speakers underpunctuate, not over. I used to teach ESL courses, so I can usually spot those who are not native english speakers as opposed to those who are just not trying.

Oww.  Brain hurts from reading that.
I agree with you totally - that one definitely is at the far end of the bell curve in terms of bad/weird spelling and typing.
I am just thankful that it gives one more way to weed out people that would just truly be a bad match.  Imagine if everyone were great writers.  It would make it so hard to determine online who would be a good match!

The thing I wonder (being on the older side) is whether younger people just have lower standards for writing/typing.  They are more used to text messaging and emailing, I think perhaps there is just a lower standard.  It's a hurdle I just can't get past though.

I totally agree with your comments regarding the said email. I myself couldn’t even bother reading past the third line. As for my comment, I was just making a light hearted remark…it wasn’t meant as a challenge or argument to your post.

Trust means enabling other people to take advantage of your vulnerabilities—but expecting that they will not do this.

Missokyst -> RE: Approaches that mostly do not work.. (9/29/2007 8:55:33 PM)

In the time I have been online I have noticed that netspeak springs more naturally from the younger crowd.  But most of them will attempt to meet you half way if you mention it.  Unfortunately the gentleman in question has contacted me before.  He is my age.  I don't even think it is a spelling issue with him.  It seems to be a matter of personal pride more than anything.  But.. since I occasionally have seen his profile (when I forget who he is), I have seen that sometimes he has a sub in consideration.  And omg.. that does mean that his approach will work on some.
A former boss once told me, there is a buyer for everything out there.
yikes.

It's a sad truth that teenagers are taking so little pride in what they say and how they say it (or, in this particular case, type it). As a person who is still, technically, a teenager, it makes me shudder in disgust to be part of their age group. But I can say this! We're not all that bad, thank the gods.

Off-topic question... [sm=mrpuffy.gif]<--- What the hell is that thing?

Greetings
I think Barnum or Bailey of circus fame once said...."there's a sucker born every minute"...what they did not say is that most of them just have to part with their (insert favorite noun here) to someone else's benefit. Thank the LORD that My woman is neither a sucker, nor a suckee...we met intellectually, formed a bond of friendship which turned into something far deeper as time passed. Yep, I certainly am the luckiest Man to walk the planet...why? cuz I said so. heh heh

Not all of us young'uns have lower standards. Some of us are quite the sticklers when it comes to spelling and require at least decent grammar. No one I exchange messages with on a regular basis uses poor spelling or grammar (in some cases because I correct them when they do). Personally my spelling tends to suffer due to being very phonetic, so I use spell check or a dictionary. Very little will get me to stop conversing with someone faster than netspeak (I instinctually start deducting IQ points when I see it). I don't expect perfection, just a decent effort.

Spelling is sometimes a problem, and misspelled words I can understand. But laziness in not bothering to use words instead of letters annoys me.  It is unimpressive and shows me that someone just doesnt give a damn about the impression they make.  And spelling aside, punctuation makes a difference as well. Misuse of punctuation makes you look either clueless or uneducated. Even if you cant spell and for some reason dont want to bother with a spell check which you can easily get at... anyone who has been through at least slementary school has learned to puncuate. Missing a period, comma or whatever is one thing, but something as bad as that is overkill.

Ive gotten some like that as well, if it looks THAT bad, I ignore it, I dont even bother trying to read through.

"Trust means enabling other people to take advantage of your vulnerabilities—but expecting that they will not do this".

Dreamy you are the one that, by your own report in your previous posts, spent countless hours with a dictionary making a very eloquent profile, these people use "ur" when they know full well that "your" is the correct word and are just too lazy to type it out.  Unlike you, they make no attempt at expressing themselves in a comprehensible manner.  Therefore, (and I can't speak to everyone's opinions) I don't think these posts apply to you.  You may have some language deficiencies, although despite your protests, I have yet to see you make any errors, but you clearly demonstrate your desire to communicate in an intelligent and polite manner.  They do not, they are SO not even close to your quality.

In general, I like people.

And in general, I dislike those who cling to negative baggage-life is too short to be a victim.

DMFParadox -> RE: Approaches that mostly do not work.. (9/30/2007 2:25:53 AM)

Poor spelling and typing--if you're a literate English speaker--is such an easy thing to fix, too.  Just look before you click.

I am extremely prejudiced when it comes to spelling and grammer, it makes me wonder what else in their life is as sloppy and unmanaged.

when I actually understood what he was trying to say, well, any time the word "true" appears, it's an automatic strike against them, right up there with "real" and the dreaded..."dominate".

(and yes, I am aware that I begin all sentences with l/c letters, except those that start with "I"[;)])

eyesopened -> RE: Approaches that mostly do not work.. (9/30/2007 3:11:07 AM)

i am very forgiving of people's spelling errors.  i have worked with brilliant mechanical and chemical engineers who can't spell worth a crap so i assume there's something about the right-brain v left-brain theory.  i have never been able to get the spelling checker on this forum to work on my computer.

i am also very forgiving of people using "ur" or "k" when texting from their phones.  i do it myself.  But saving keystrokes on an email doesn't make any kind of sense at all to me.  To save two keystrokes by typing "ur" instead of "your" and then adding unnessary keystrokes by adding a series of commas is not a right v left brain phenomenon.

The real problem is that we may post these comments hoping against hope that someone will change their typographical laziness.  The reality is that the offenders most likely will never read this thread or if they do, will never recognize themselves.

I could not either. I eventually deleted the downloaded program last week. Me and installing software are not compatible.
