The crayon colour thing is a common misconception, and it's also why your printer is cmyk rather than rgb, like your monitor. The difference is addition and subtraction. If you shine a red light, a green light, and a blue light at something, you'll get close to white, cos they're adding. But if you rub a red, green, and blue crayon on something, you'll get black, cos you're now subtracting light from the full spectrum white that's present. I never understood the whole deal when we were learning out of textbooks, but now that i've had some practical experience with it all, it makes much more sense. I can go into more detail if you'd like, but it'll have to be later when i get back from trade school.
