That's true.. there are annoying people all over, so those who are unnecessarily loud biking aren't the only dolts in this world.  For me, it's sort of like your neighbor got an unnecessarily loud add-on for his lawn mower and started doing laps around your house, despite not actually needing to cut any grass.. just for the fun of annoying you.

For your situation.. I wonder if mentioning it to your neighbor might help?  Might be a bit awkward to have to bring up, but perhaps meeting them when they're mowing one morning, perhaps towards the end, and asking them if they could schedule it for a later time would be the politest way of going about it.  (Least awkward, since they're doing it and the subject's already up.)

FYI, I've tried talking to him since I'm up 6 am due to him.  He's a heavy duty alcoholic who is hanging his head in the toilet at that time with severe dry heaves. He lives across the street from Me and you can still hear him.    When I've tried to politely mention about waiting a little later in the day to mow the lawn I was greeted with a "go fuck yourself".   Any more words of wisdom?
Quote tag adjusted.

Calling the cops, if it's to the point of disturbing the peace.  Elsewise, you may be hating the same type of inconsiderate ass that I am.

You've got that right ... nobody is complaining about the puerile assholes w/ their car radios blasting so you can hear them 1 block away OVER the sound of your own TV.  Bikes are not the only noisemakers.

Oh, no, just not complaining about it here.  Trust me, I hate them, too; this thread just doesn't happen to be about them.

You are not supposed to no and the reasons as to why I’ve already mentioned. Funny you plead ignorance on this but I don’t see many bikers in the UK ride down the side of a police car when stopped at a traffic light to get to the front.

Then you haven’t opened your eyes.  I’ve done it, countless times, and would and will again, tomorrow.

In the UK, and Europe, filtering is fine, unlike some states of the US.  Plod don’t mind.  Indeed a bike cop once told me “if you’re not going to filter, why ride a bike in a city?”.

I’ve hit peds before, and seriously injured one on one occasion.

There was a full investigation, and I was completely exonerated.

At no time did I feel bad about it.  If stupid people want to do stupid things, that’s their lookout.  All I can do is my best to not kill them, despite their stupidity.

Obviously, if I’d made a mistake or been doing something wrong I’d have felt completely differently.

I used to get really heated about that sort of thing too.

Nowadays, and I live in a busy and vibrant part of London, if someone wants to have a party, or blare their stereo, or drive past in their car blaring it, or drive past in a noisy car, or on a bike, and I want to sleep, I just reach for my trusty foam earplugs.

Comfy as all hell, and you sleep like a baby.

Seriously, I’m a far more chilled person as a result; try some – I would think bike shops in your area would have some, also drugstores maybe?

Give it a go, and relax.

There are too many things worth hearing- some light music, a good TV progam off to the side, the girl one loves breathing lightly- to want to have to wear ear plugs.

Not that one should have to make concessions just because others like to be noisy.

When I was a toddler, my daddy let me ride his bike straddling the gas tank. I remember feeling so proud when I was finally old enough to ride behind him. I guess I had been on a bike for so long that I felt safe and almost fearless on the back of it. So, it came as quite a surprise when the car cut us off and hit the front tire with their bumper. We flew quite a distance sans the bike. I walked away without a scratch, but my dad had a mad case of road rash and not a stitch of clothes left. Good thing modesty wasn't one of his virtues. It was a quite a learning experience. I still love bikes.

He taught me how to drive anything with wheels and how to drive defensively. Common sense is usually a good tool. If it's raining, don't speed up to get in front of an 18 wheeler. Don't stop suddenly in front of anyone, especially someone driving something bigger than you. If you can't see the mirrors or the driver, they can't see you. I could go on for days...even about loading an 18 wheeler so its center of gravity is correct.

But I digress...not two months ago, I was driving down one of the local highways. I've got a large 4x4 truck. My visibility is limited due to the height, but I've tried to compensate with blindspot mirrors and such. Anyway, I put on my blinker and even turned my head to look when I started to change lanes. I just didn't see him. It was like he came out of nowhere.

But, alas, he didn't come out of nowhere...he had just come from the HD shop. Brand new bike. Brand new leather. Brand new everything. And, his brand new ass was planted in a bush. He tried to "lay the bike down". My God! I could have killed him because he saw me put my blinker on and panicked because he was in my blind spot. If he would have just stayed put, I would have seen him.

When he extricated himself from the bush, there was a biker who stopped to make sure everyone was okay and the yuppie explained what happened. The biker gave him the finer points of why one would not "lay the bike down". Then the biker gave him a ticket, being that he was also a state trooper. He could have easily slid under my truck rather than towards the woods. And, all the shaking heads in the world wouldn't have made him any less dead.

I will also say that I had to lay a bike down once. I was at a stoplight at a dead stop and the damn thing just tilted too far over...so, I'll make the most of a very embarrassing situation and tell everyone that I laid the bike down for the safety of all parties concerned, mainly me. I've never felt more stupid in my life.

Anyway, I've been in a few harrowing situations on the back of a motorcycle since that wreck with my dad and mostly it was a car crowding our space. Being louder wouldn't have helped. They knew we were there, they just decided we didn't need all that much room. I've also been in my truck with bikers weaving in and out through traffic becoming a danger. I'm certainly not the safety police...just don't kill yourself on or under my truck.

And as far as the OP...you'll just have to deal. Sounds like some idiot just being rude, but get some earplugs or a white noise machine. College is a time to learn coping skills, in addition to your other studies.

Sadly, there are all too many bikers out there with insufficient training and/or skills.  I’ll be honest, I wonder how I survived my first 5 years on the road; young, dumb, and full of … well bravado, more than anything.

These days I tend to see trouble coming long before it actually arrives.  The years lend a certain skill themselves.

But we all make mistakes … trouble is, on a bike, a mistake can cost you the lot.

I still wouldn’t be without one though.

My “best” was, as a young man, managing to forget I was in gear, taking my hands off the bars at a set of lights, obviously in front of some lovely ladies I was eyeing up, trying to look cool, and of course the bike was still in gear, lurched forward, and I gallantly threw myself under it to prevent damage.

Not my finest hour.

I’ve made all my points and you’ve answered a select few of them. Read your own post before you accuse me of pontificating.

Thanks for making the judgement I have no clue about something when you barely know anything about me. Read the Highway Code I would also recommend. Filtering is wrong maybe the police don’t enforce the law because they are lazy or incapable. Wouldn’t be the first time now would it?

In the UK, this is ABSOLUTELY not the case.  Filtering is 100% legal.

In the US, I’m given to understand that it’s legal in some states, and against the law in others.  Others actually in the know may let me know, please.

BTW, you seem to have a major issue with the police.  Don’t change it for the world – it’s too, too precious.

That’s easy when you don’t have visions of pedestrian target practice.
