gorgeous1 -> Are we more intelligent? (11/15/2007 2:38:24 PM)

This may have been brought up before, but since I'm new to this site, I am curious if any of you agree.

I consider kink to be, obviously, far more complex than vanilla. I think to be kinky, one must have an intellect and imagination that is in "overdrive", and therefore, I think people that tend to be aroused by things that are off the beaten path are smarter than the average bear.

So, not to ask any of you to brag, but do you consider yourself to be above-average in the brain department? When you were a kid, were you the one always making up the games that everyone on the block would play? Were you often caught with a book and a flashlight under the covers well after bed time?

I think that I am pretty intelligent and I think there are many in the lifestyle that are as intelligent and more intelligent as me.  But I wouldn't generalize people in the lifestyle as being more intelligent as non lifestylers. I've seen some people that.....well, nevermind.

Have you ever been to a lifestyle event? There are certainly people of all different intellectual levels there and nothing would indicate that as a whole they are superior to the vanilla world. I also don't believe that kink relationships are any more complex than vanilla ones...or any deeper...or more committed.

As for my own personal level of intelligence, yes, I do believe that I would be considered higher than average. It has nothing whatsoever to do with my kink level though.

LadyLegs -> RE: Are we more intelligent? (11/15/2007 2:44:35 PM)

Well I know my IQ is above 100, but judging from the emails I get and some of the posts I read, I tend to doubt that is indicative of a higher level of intelligence in the BDSM community at large.

toservez -> RE: Are we more intelligent? (11/15/2007 2:49:04 PM)

We are a cross section of all other human beings and this includes our intellect. Most everyone here is going to consider themselves intelligent because an extremely high percentage of people in this world would describe themselves as intelligent. It is simply one of our go to pat on our own back type values.

Actions and education levels have little to do with intellect. There are also different types of intellect that most human beings probably can be well past the average and at the same time have an area they are completely incompetent. I am probably way above average in science but completely useless with anything artistic.

Adalgisa -> RE: Are we more intelligent? (11/15/2007 2:53:07 PM)

Don't think so. When I was a kid, I spent my days after school devouring books, however I have many friends who used to do that and still do it, but are pretty much vanilla. And if they are voracious readers, not all of them can be considered above intelligent.

Like mistoferin said above me, I also don't think kink relationships are more complex or more committed than vanilla ones. The level of committment and trust put into each relationships is up to the partners and how much they are willing to put into a relationship.

Lumus -> RE: Are we more intelligent? (11/15/2007 2:55:06 PM)

If kinky people are smarter, why do people get injured during kink-related activities...?

I is smurt.

briska -> RE: Are we more intelligent? (11/15/2007 2:55:34 PM)

While I think I'm better at communicating than other people - mostly through what I've learned in being in a poly D/s relationships - I'm certainly not smarter than other people.  Just more sensitive, and more willing to see outside the box. :)

xoxi -> RE: Are we more intelligent? (11/15/2007 3:00:22 PM)

When I was in 5th grade I went to a 'special' school for gifted children.  I had to take an IQ test in order to get accepted and it gave my IQ as 174.  I had been in gifted programs in 'regular' school before that, and when I went back to regular schol for Junior High, I skipped the 7th grade.  I got a 32 out of 36 on the ACT (average score is 19) and I had a hangover when I took it [8D]

That being said I don't think kinky people as a whole are smarter than 'vanilla' people.  I do think that intelligent people sometimes feel a sense of alienation and that makes them more introspective than their peers - which could lead to kink being developed further than just a bit of spanky spank...but I've met some brilliant kinky people as well as some really, really dumb ones.

It would be interesting to see a study that shows how certain factors of intelligence relate to identifying as kinky.  I wonder if that's ever been done.

Stephann -> RE: Are we more intelligent? (11/15/2007 3:06:43 PM)

I think that's a bit like saying "more people in the US have blue eyes than in Switzerland."  A tiny segmant of a population put under a microscope, to find deviations compared to a much larger body....

We could say the same for people in New York City, vice Little Rock.  We could (and have) done it along racial and gender lines.  What we come up with is....

That it's just too complicated for any one person to sit down and make generalized classifications.  There are just far too many factors.

Another way of saying that kinky people are better than non-kinky?

As for my intelligence level; I consider myself on par with anyone that I come into contact with in real life; I don't place myself above or below them. If a person can hold a conversation; that's all I care about.

azropedntied -> RE: Are we more intelligent? (11/15/2007 3:14:42 PM)

Yes we as kinksters are the mostest smartest peoples chuckles .. I do think overall in the brains dept  as a whole  bdsm'ers and kinky fetish people are high in the smarts dept and very high creatively .
As a kid playing games like  cops and robbers  i just wanted to be the robber so i could get cought and tied to the tree .Sometimes i was extreamly easy to catch too *wink

I was tempted to answer because I know my IQ and my EI and my SI and my arse from my elbow.....but I'll pass

Celeste43 -> RE: Are we more intelligent? (11/15/2007 3:20:38 PM)

Hang out here for a while and you'll be shocked at how many candidates for Darwin Awards turn up.

And I disagree that kink is more complex than vanilla. Any successful relationship that meets the needs of both parties is complex. Nothing is changed if the vanilla person uses a feather to tease his/her partner and the kink one uses a flogger. There are lots of people who are competent with toys and incompetent with people.

Grlwithboy -> RE: Are we more intelligent? (11/15/2007 3:24:19 PM)

We are just vanilla people who groove to sadomasochism, psychodrama and archetypes. Being a perv makes you no worse nor better than anyone who's less so.

laurell3 -> RE: Are we more intelligent? (11/15/2007 3:26:27 PM)

Some of the threads on this forum may imply differently. [8D]

I don't think any stereotype is true for all d/s, gorean or bdsm'rs.  Personally, I've always been considered in the highest range of intelligence by most measuring scores, however, I have come to realize in life that intelligence is a wasted trait if one doesn't have common sense, decency, balance and the desire to use that intelligence to have a meaningful life.  There are mensa members I know that I consider morons because they lack any balance and profess their greatness while doing nothing great with that IQ score.

There are quite a few studies out there that say that the average bdsm'r is above average intelligence, however, like all studies about a group of people that may not be open to share their participation in the group, I question whether it's merely a measure of those that answer rather than representative of the general population.

FRSguy -> RE: Are we more intelligent? (11/15/2007 3:33:59 PM)

Although not to imply that we are different if I remember corectly I read someplace that the average bdsm'r is a upper middle class professional in there 30's.  However, what I have met on CM tends to be much diffeerent when it comes to slaves and subs.... not allways just usually.
