During the Cold War we worked with the people of Afghanistan to repel the Soviets, who were marching towards the oil fields of the Middle East, and those oil fields were and are vital to the entire world economy.

Keep it real, keep everything in it's rightful context.

thank you for confirming my point.  specifically osama bin laden.

Yup, the CIA did fund and arm the Taliban in Afganistan to fight against The Soviet Union!
You know, there's a lot to be said for minding your own business whether you're a country or an individual.
Why do U.S. Presidents have to react everytime some foreign country farts?
They're supposed to be working for us!

exactly!  like do legitimate business with them not take over as we are.

This shit will all come back to haunt us to you can bet on that.  it always has!

If the CIA could have overthrown the Taliban without a full invasion, odds are good they would have done that. All of your conspiracy theories are just silly!

I just read the Taliban's gaining control again.

Dubai: Six years after the Taliban were overthrown, it still has "a significant presence in more than half of Afghanistan'' and the Nato force needs to be doubled in size "with a presence from Muslim countries," according to a report by the Senlis Council think-tank.

Despite the presence of tens of thousands of Nato-led troops and billions of dollars in aid, the insurgents - driven out by the US invasion in 2001 - now control "vast swathes of unchallenged territory, including rural areas, some district centres, and important road arteries," the Senlis Council said. The Taliban could even reach the capital Kabul next year, the report stated.

It's well documented over here that the Taliban are alive and kicking, but it isn't just the Taliban: you don't need to be an extremist to defend your homeland. There's political capital in referring to the Afghans as "Taliban" because it supports the notion of extremism versus self-determination.

A senior Saudi official on Monday sought to distance his government from a court's decision to sentence a woman who was gang-raped.   "Unfortunately, these things happen. Bad judgments occur in legal systems," Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal told reporters while in Washington to attend a Middle East peace conference in Maryland.

So why hasn't the Saudi government given this girl a pardon?

Pink, I couldn't care less about her.
Why hasn't Bush pardoned the two Border Patrol Agents who are in prison?

Lordandmaster -> RE: Saudi rape victim gets 200 lashes.... (12/17/2007 6:05:21 AM)

Update: Evidently their king pardoned her.

If we took a trillion dollars a year AnencephalyBoy and Clinton and Bush and Reagan used to knock over oil regimes to try to annex their crude oil, and used it to develop Lithium / Ion batterys or nanocarbon tubules to store energy, used our existing energy infrastructure, developed the use of alternative energy sources like wave power, wind power, and geothermal, (e.g. Iceland) we could completely wean ourselves from fossil fuels.  Everybody else who wants to bet  on the losing horse of crude oil reserves, could go get stuffed.  We would not lose any soldiers, spend any money throwing over foreign countries, and not make enemies of pretty much everybody.

Think outside the box, Sanity.  Not everybody wants to be an obtuse lap-dog for Corporatocracy.

I'll bet you that there are plenty poor Chinese folk perfectly willing to slavishly mine and smelt all the toxic metals needed for your batteries, using the cheapest possible means, too.

Great thinking...

Oh, and when you've talked Ted Kennedy and Barbara Streisand into allowing windfarms off the coasts where their precious mansions sit, be sure and let us all know.

[sarcasm]

True, Sanity.

There is not enough of the element Carbon to make carbon nanotubules which hold more energy in a form which doesnt require heavy metals or whatever.

I agree with your position that we should continue invade sovereign nations to allows us to suck as much crude oil and burn as much carbon and burn and release into the atmosphere as much elemental mercury into the atmosphere, because as we all know a lithium ion battery which can be recycled safely is so much less dangerous.

[/sarcasm]

Get 'er done!
