okay, here's my reactions, in the order I had them:

1) a big non-judgemental EWWWW.
2) at least their not paying hard cash to do depraved things to poverty-enslaved minors, like so many male tourist's across the world.
3) who do you think has the power in the bedroom? the young virle stud or the rich socially powerful woman?
4) are these strapping male studs spineless pretty-boys/gold-diggers in pursuit of a high-life or 'taking the power back' for all of colonialism's injustice?
5) is this on the level of a rich man enticing a good time out of a woman with material goods in the western world; or is this a more sinister form of colonialism, racism, or classim?

I don't quite understand the 'Ew', or the uproar over this. It has been going on for an awfully long time, a lot of resorts have older women that are 'entertained' by local cabana boys. As a kid I used to watch them, the older women with giant rocks on their fingers being oiled by young nubile men.
It very well could be considered a form of prostitution, the barter of sex for shiny baubles. It could also be a play on the plantation owner angle, but honestly unless these women are forcing the young men then I don't have much of a problem
But my view really could be from seeing it at resorts from a very young age, seeing the women do it as the men were off playing tennis. Seeing the men doing it as their wives were off at the spa etc.
If the young men are doing this for cash or other reward then um.. I hope they get tipped very well (and they usually do). As to the power, IMO it lays in both hands. The women have the power (money) and the men have the power (tight young bodies) so I see a fairly even exchange.
Sinister? I don't think so but I'm sure there are those that will see it as both ew and sinister.

everyone on the planet is using other people or being used. it is a fact of life that really needs to be faced.

the really salient point is not about using. it is about fair exchange.

as long as no-one is being forced or deprived of choice (such as true slavery), and both parties are satisfied with the exchange, then that is business as usual.

that applies equally to vanilla marriages and cabana boys.

Dang I don't think I ever thought of 52ish as grandmother material! That is still young-prime of life. I don't see them as sad or desperate either.. in my mind I see them as kicking back and having fun. Paying for it, because they can and there is a market for it.

*am I some sort of old weirdo now?? cuz I would love to have a cabana boy of any background rub oil onto my back poolside. especially after sitting in a plane for 16 hours.

I tend to view sex, assuming we aren't dealing with romance as the article says we aren't, as something of a "You have something I want" situation anyway.

Hot guy in the club is sexy. I want to sleep with him. He has his body, I want it. He thinks I'm sexy, I have something he wants. We exchange goods and services and both come away happy. I think hoy guy in the club is sexy. He doesn't think I'm sexy, but does - for whatever reason - want to ride around in my car, have a good meal free, and hang out at my house. He has no problems having sex with me if he gets what he wants. We exchange goods and services and both come away happy.

As long as everyone is overage and isn't being forced, I really don't give a damn what makes people happy. It's like fretting about adults running around in diapers - not my bag but it isn't hurting anyone.

That's what i was thinking... maybe i'm just more travel-averse than the average person, but Kenya seems like a hell of a long way to go just to sleep with a young black man.... i thought they were after a "ride" on a rhinoceros or something else a bit more exotic
