I have had to adopt a similar action on threads in the past.  Perhaps it was a year or so ago that I read one thread in particular that was highly offensive, racially charged, and instead of blasting off continually, I opted out of the thread.  For me that was the high road, and one that allowed me to continue to stay active on Collarme and let the other posters do the same.  It saved me from anxiety, anger, and high blood pressure.  I was pretty sure the exchange that could have ensued wouldn't have been about communicating or a meeting of the minds, but just endless arguing.  I'd make the same decision again under similar circumstances.  Why read stuff that puts me in a bad place?

This is why I started this thread, to see how other people handle things on here.
You articulated very well, what I have been trying to say!
Just NOT reading threads and posts made by posters displaying negative energy,
is indeed the high road!

I can still get a few jabs in and take the high road.
If I don't say something, I will end up being road kill for those like you.

Popeye this is so true. Some people unfortunately are so anally retentive if you gave them an enema you wouldn't even get a single drop back and you'd lose the rubber tubing as well.

Status: offline 		It's not defamatory if it's accurate though, which is the critical point that you are missing. Then again, if you're still mad after all this time maybe you didn't miss it at all... they do say that nothing stings quite so badly as an unwelcome truth.

      I agree that declaring an intent to take it can be interpreted as pretty damn snarky.  If you've ever done any off-road driving though, you'll know that sometimes the only way out of the mud is to get a lot flying while you climb the hill.

You forgot to add those that will bait you and continue to bait you, so you can join them
on the low road.
You can take the "high" road and still speak up for yourself, especially with online bullying.

To me taking the high road does not mean not arguing a point. It means arguing the point without attacking the other personally. In that context I always take the high road. Even if attacked I try to limit the vehemence of my response.

I can’t tell you how many times I have honestly and seriously considered another’s post….written a response disagreeing but politely… only to have the poster than say something like…That’s crap…or you must have sawdust in your head.

Not that I have not responded …I think the worse I have ever done is call someone pompous.

I understand I will not usually change the person’s mind I am arguing with but I hope our debate will perhaps give third parties a new way to look at the subject.

There is one big problem that is often overlooked and that is the medium we are arguing in. Without the ability to hear word inflections or see body language it is very easy to misinterpret a post. There have been times when I have mistaken a response as a personal attack and I’m sure some of my responses have also been interpreted that way.

There are people in the forum I disagree with on many levels but I still respect their viewpoint and like them… and like debating with them.

Status: offline 		It seems that a lot of disagreements on the threads turn to personal attacks, and not responding to the attacks would seem to be the high road.  But if it is possible to remain on point, there is no reason to stop posting, to my way of thinking.

I stopped at this point, and certainly do not want to flame in add anything incendiary to this thread. But, if you had forgotten the post CuriousLord is asking you, why did you use it as part of the opening post of this thread of taking the high road. That is why some get accused of not "taking the high road".  Actual questions are mistaken as goads, and flamatory statements when in fact they are not.

I just ran across a thread and many responses. which as a woman of color, who is over 40, that I found very offensive.
 
I did get a tiny bit nasty, but then I attempted to take the "high road", and decided to not
respond or even keep reading that thread because it could have become ugly.


Was that not part of the OP?  That is what CuriousLord asked about.

Status: offline 		I think that if there is such a high road, then it must be awfully damn narrow because no one seems able to stay up on it for very long. People looking down their noses while calling others "children" or "childish" isn't any better than the behavior they're trying to condemn, in my opinion.
