Many who obtain advanced degrees never receive any advantage from all the hard work. Others do and it wouldn't have been possible if they hadn't had their tickets punched to allow their competitive nature to be recognized. It still requires more searching, hard work, intuition, risk taking and luck to make it pay off.

Congratulations on the degree. Your advice by the way is dead on. In fact that's exactly why I'm up at 6:30am on the break...writing!

Just keep focused on your lifelong goals and push yourself to write every day -- even if it's only a page or two, and you can get it done.

And get feeback from your committee as you go along. Don't put that off as so many do or you may discover after one full draft that you have to start over again or revise everything too much. Getting feedback as you go will save you time in the long run. Make sure your chair will have your back, so to speak, so when that borderline committee member who is really there to just fill it out makes a stupid suggestion, your chair can say "No, it's fine as it is" and let you keep moving forward.

Whoops I screwed the quote up haha, Congrats again!!!

Good luck. I hope you have or can find a good support system.

My in-laws sent my husband and I both gifts for my degree because they know first hand that it isn't just a one person accomplishment. They've never met Fox but we are hoping they can in the future.

I start classes 1/14 working toward a PhD in psych.

All you people are making me more nervous than I already was.

~wandering away to go vomit~

Muttling -> RE: BDSM & the Ph.D. AHHHHHHHHH (12/19/2007 10:32:56 AM)

I've done consulting and I've done graduate school.   I will be defending a thesis for my second masters next December.   (This particular thesis is on dissertation level without the same robustness of research.  It is a limited population set.)

That said, the pain of being a grad student compared to the pain of being a consultant is like comparing bondage sluts to hard core masochists.   The only difference is that the masochists...errr consultants....get paid quite well for the pain.

Well, think of it this way.

If it were easy it wouldn't be so special when someone makes it through and gets that PhD.

If you are organized and focused and make time for other things in your life, it will still be stressful but it can also be a wonderful period of your life where you develop into your own person/scholar/doctor.

wheresmydaddy08 -> RE: BDSM & the Ph.D. AHHHHHHHHH (12/19/2007 12:10:23 PM)

I just started on my bachlors degree. I actually took my last final exam of the semester earlier today.
I did not think i would enjoy learning so much. i actually missed it when i took the summer off. Is there such a thing as an "educational masocist"?
Congrats on your degree!.

"So I ask, what's the point in BDSM? It can't possibly match the pain, humiliation and discipline that graduate school provides."

You ain't never heard of Doms that want to be called "Professor" instead of "Master?" Sucker!

After 3 years of classes,
2 weeks of grueling comprehensive exams,
3 hours of intense oral defense,
2 years of field work,
I've read a mountain of books that no one cares about,
Caused certain damage to my liver from alcohol,
Caused double that damage to my kidney's from coffee,
I'm unable to talk in social situations without bringing up Foucault or Marx or discourse analysis,
Now I have to write the damn dissertation which no one will read, and will lead me to a killer 40k/year.

So I ask, what's the point in BDSM? It can't possibly match the pain, humiliation and discipline that graduate school provides.
AHHHHHHHH I'm going to write.

Ask not what is the point of BDSM, ask what is the point of a PhD!!!!!!

Hehe, I just decided to bail on my PhD and not stick around for that academic masochist badge of honor in something that really was just making me miserable, an old dream that wasn't as romantic in reality, that I was sticking with basically just to prove I was tough enough to take it.  BDSM is a much more satisfying outlet.

Congrats for sticking it out, I'm sure you must really love it and have the spirit for it if you made it this far.  Best of luck to you.  Still glad it's not me though.

Hey NotNuts..... Just hang in there, have your nervous breakdown for a day or 2 after comps and then realize that you haven't come this far just to not finish!  lol  Worked for me  (adding in ice cream and Reeses helps with that too)!  It may take more time than ya thought to finish....it may take a lot more work than you thought to finish.  You'll make it though, and it's a really good feeling when it all ends!  Hey, BDSM can actually be a pretty "cathartic" outlet for you to release some of that frustration!

  Awww, batshalom, don't worry.  One of my PhDs is in Psychology.  You can do it...and if ya need anything from one who's been through that particular discipline, drop me a line on the other side.  It does come in handy ya know.....I tell subs that not only can I just get into their minds, I can screw with their minds on a professional level! lol  I just ask them to clean a bit up there so I don't trip over anything as I'm wandering around! lol

Thanks, Petronius....made me shiver a bit remembering some of those, but I totally agree! lol

Ya, I think all of us that have gone through it have a little bit of maoschist, at least, in us.  Even those of us on the dominant end of the spectrum have felt like bottoms sometimes during the whole process.  Can you now see why I refer to academics as a "bastardized microcosm of a parallel universe"?  Power to all who are enduring the gauntlet of higher education, and congrats to all that have made it through already!

MadamI -> RE: BDSM & the Ph.D. AHHHHHHHHH (12/21/2007 2:49:14 PM)

I'm with you, NotNutsReally. (do you have a nut allergy?) But BDSM is where We get the catharsis We need and the contact and reality grounding of 'oh yes, I have a body and these are sensations and they are real and not textual' as well as, for Me personally, an outlet for My pent-up-ness. No better way to shift writer's block than with a good flogging, or an extreme humiliation session. [:)]

Kaiynasha -> RE: BDSM & the Ph.D. AHHHHHHHHH (12/21/2007 3:02:13 PM)

NotNutsReally, gosh you are a breath of fresh air. I am feeling you strongly. I am also in the PHD AHHHHHHHHHHH you're tired and your moods are up and down.  I went to a residency and was told that getting your PHD makes you go through so many changes. That you will not be the same person you were going in. You will be better. I left feel ready for anything! I have yet to find my mentor or committee to argue with...YOU ARE VERY BLESSED to have argued and on your ways.

But I feel your pain. Sometimes I wake up and go, "Why am I doing this? WHY?" But it is worth it! GO GO GO! Keep going! And STOP DRINKING!!!

Now when it is my turn...please be around to tell me to GO GO GO TOO!

Happy Holidays

PS: All I talk about now is theoretical orientations. [:)]

preiapet -> RE: BDSM & the Ph.D. AHHHHHHHHH (12/21/2007 3:21:56 PM)

I am finishing up my Master's degree within the next two weeks.  I am done with the courses, just a bit more writing to do.  I was thinking of taking a year off before starting my doctorate.  With work, school, and trying to have a life, things get crazy.... let me rephrase that... I get crazy.... but it will be worth it in the end.
