Status: offline 		So, I'm just curious to as what the gas prices are where you live. It's $2.56 here...went up again today. Do you think it will go back down a little like it sometimes does, or do you think it will keep going up?

Status: offline 		The current blame for Gas prices in the US has been put on refineries.

There hasn't been a new fuel refinery built in the US for over 30 yrs and about three of them are down due to the rebuilding of some fires. So we have less gas yet more demand.

I'm sure gas will be back down to $2/gallon by december but I wouldn't put it past gas companies to make on last increase to suck up all they can before the Hydrogen Cars hit the market.

Status: offline 		Right where I live it was 2.34 when I left for Texas on August 6th. When I returned on August 14th is was 2.69 and has stayed about there.

Status: offline 		I just filled up at $2.53. It depends on where you go in this town. In some places it is higher. I haven't been able to find it any lower. Just heard on the news tonight that it will not go over $3.00. I'm not holding My breath. Just doing less driving!

Status: offline 		I just paid 2.72 today, up three cents since yesterday.

They have a multitude of excuses, that seem to change every other day. If you ask me, I say the consortium of crooks from the Petroleum industry are leading this nation down a stray path to catastrophe.

Raise your hand if you think the good folks from Petroleum industry wanna see an end to the insurgency.

Status: offline 		Well, the petroleum industry is making money hand over fist right now, but they are worried that people are going to start to make permanent lifestyle changes (such as carpooling, switching to public transportation, etc.), and then when oil prices start to creep back down, the gas companies are going to end up LOSING money.

Gasoline prices were bound to rise; it's only happening sooner and more dramatically than we expected. Maybe automobile manufacturers will start taking demands for efficiency a little more seriously now. I'm no admirer of oil companies, but automobile companies are as much to blame for this crisis.

While I do agree that the auto makers share some responsibility in the problem that surrounds high gas costs, I think the petroleum industry is far more culpable.

Both GM and Ford have realized record losses and are on the verge of bankruptcy; while on the other hand the petroleum industry has profited lucratively.

And to take you back to the good old days when Ralph Nader was America's true consumer advocate. It was as he says, the petroleum industry who played Napaleon in suppressing alternative sources of energy.

Now, if everyone traded in their SUV's for a Mini Cooper, I still think we'd be shit on by the birds in the petroleum industry.

By the way... what do you think would happen if all the water we drink was underground and the oil companies were in charge of extracting it ;}

In the UK - we are paying approximately 92 pence per litre - thats around $1.62 a litre.
Theres about 3.7 litres in a gallon.
So thats over $ 6 per US gallon.

Status: offline 		Here in Canada I am paying $1.15 CAD a liter. I have to put premium in My car because of the type of car I drive and it costs roughly $75 CAD to fill it. Trips to the gas station are painful and frequent.

But not all car manufacturers are going bankrupt. Far from it. And, you know, maybe Ford and GM would be doing a little better right now if they manufactured something further removed from crap.

There happens to be a very interesting issue of Scientific American, out right now, about how we are going to deal with economic and environmental problems in the future. There is a revealing article in it about automobiles.

LOL Lam! I always thought Ford stood for "Figure On Repair Daily"... I drive a 1997 Honda Civic Hatchback with over 304,000 miles on it and still get 37mpg on the highway... I LOVE that car!

Gas prices here are on a par with what everyone else has posted. I'm just glad I'm on a hiatus from all the driving I normally do, and am NOT looking forward to having to pay a fortune once I start up again.

Why? I remember year's ago when I bought my dream car. An SUV I had been dreaming about for year's. The gas prices went from like 1.00 a gallon to something like 1.26 a gallon by the time I had financed it to the time I took ownership. My first gallon of gas was around 1.26. Never put anything cheaper into it...anyway this whole gas thread made me think about it.
I still have that car...it cost's me 60 a tank now to fill it.
It is almost 20 years old to.

Forget prices; wait until gas is rationed as it was during the '70's. The issues surrounding this natural resource are myriad and that makes it difficult to place the blame anywhere, though intuitively we all know we're getting f**ked.

There have been favorable changes in the IRS Code allowing acceleration of depletion allowances, and methods of planning exist to evade recapture of accelerated depletion during a merger and aquisition. That is no accident. So we underwrite the gas companies to a large degree with our taxes; it would take genuis to run an oil company in such a way as to show a loss on the company's financials.

i also remember the promises made concerning the alaskan oil pipeline; that we would be so much less dependent on imported oil; that the alaskan reserves were vast, etc. Now it seems the geologists may have fudged a bit and the alaskan fields are under-producing.

We also need to accept some of the responsibility. After gas rationing ended, people once again developed a taste for large cars and then came the boom in SUV's, which get about 15 mpg. Interest in alternative energy sources, such as solar, fell off again. Americans behave like the glutton at the table where oil is concerned.

Status: offline 		Yes, that's all very true. Except I wonder about those deceptive geologists. My understanding is that everyone knew the Alaskan oil reserves would yield only enough energy to fuel us for six months.

on the radio today the DJ's were discussing the gas prices and stated that gas costs 5 cents a gallon in Iraq....
