Am I the only person here that doesn't celebrate Christmas? Just wondering cause I see 'Merry Christmas everywhere but no Happy Chanukas....

A lot of people don't celebrate Christmas. Most people probably do, given the demographics (below). 76.5% of adult Americans are classified as Christians, as of 2006:

I think that was earlier in the month....

Start of winter is full of holidays from everywhere.

What's being christian got to do with it? I'm an athiest, but I enjoy spending time with family and friends, giving gifts, eating waaaaaaay too much red velvet cake, ham, turkey, deviled eggs, peanut balls, etc.... and lets not forget giving my relatives kids really noisy gifts like cap guns or things like silly putty

I don't expect anyone to wish me Happy Chanukah or expect to see any signs now; Chanukah ended 12/12.

No, as I really don't celebrate Christmas either yet I still indulge in some of festivities. I still wish most people Merry Christmas anyways and it doesn't bother me when they do the same. I do celebrate Yule which for me started today and lsts until midnight tomorrow!

it does bother me when someone wishes me 'Merry Christmas' it is like everyone who says that is automatically asuming i am christian or catholic or whatever and is also asuming the same of everyone else..would you really honestly like it , for example if you celebrate christmas but everywhere you went people said 'happy chanuka'?
i think 'happy holidays' is alot more polite

Hi Padriag, great new pic!

Well, since Christmas is a holiday which is a tribute to Christ's birth, then it's pretty safe to say (at least I think it is!) that it is primarily a Christian holiday.

Now of course there are plenty of folks like me, who do not consider themselves Christian yet who still enjoy the holiday. But that's why I posted what I did.

And red velvet cake? I'm jealous!!!

i do think that 'happy holidays' is more politically correct, and, by extension, more polite. but, even as a jewitch, i have no problem being wished a merry christmas. *shrugs* i know they arent doing it to be offensive, and, let's face it, the catholics definitely know how to put together a beautiful ritual (the midnight mass at their local church is gorgeous!)

I just look at it as someone who is sharing his/her holiday to me. Be it Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, Happy Kwaanza, Merry Atheism, whatever it is. It makes it more personal to me, and I appreciate that. I don't see it as assuming I am that "denomination" or that they are imposing their beliefs on me. It's just a sharing of who they are, and unless they are evil & vile, I think that's kinda cool.

I'm with ownedgirlie. In a world where people are often too selfish to share any of their time with people they don't know well, it's nice to think that at least once a year, we can all take a moment to extend the metaphorical hand of friendship and wish something good for someone.

I'm not a Christian, but I love this time of year!!
