I have really enjoyed seeing the words "Merry Christmas", and being told "Merry Christmas".

Most of us can no longer say "Merry Christmas" at work, unless we know for a fact the person
will not be offended.

Has being politically correct just gone to damn far???
Is anyone here scared to say "Merry Christmas"?

I realize everyone is NOT a Christian nor does everyone celebrate Christmas, but why
ruin it for everyone?

I plan to say "Merry Christmas" as much as I can tomorrow no matter what!

I say Merry Christmas on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.  Since, you know, it's actually Christmas and all.  All the other days I will say Happy Holidays.

At my job, last year, we -had- to say Merry Christmas...but I -do- live on the buckle of the Bible Belt...

Anywho...

Merry Christmas!

I am not afraid to say "Merry Christmas", but at the same time I try to be sensitive to others that I know who do not celebrate the holiday. I work with a Jehovah's Witness, and when I saw her the last time before we left work for the holidays I told her that I hope she enjoyed the time off with her family. I also work with a Jewish person, I told him Happy Holidays.

I alternate with how I greet people this time of year, no one at my job has acted offended, no one has made me afraid to say Merry Christmas, but I have common sense about it all too...

I do not want to be one of these freaking obnoxious people that go out of my way to prove a point about some religious holiday and shove my belief system down anyone's throat. If I was such a person I would say "Happy Yuletime" or "Happy Winter Solstice" as that to me is the real meaning behind "Christmas".

Now I would ask you a question... if someone told you Happy Kwanzaa, Happy Hanukah, Happy Ramadan (during Ramadan) would you be offended by that? If you would be offended by that, well to me that is somewhat hypocritical. If it bothered you to see other religious symbols besides your own on government buildings, I would ask you, isn't that hypocritical? If they called winter break at school "Kwanzaa Break", would that bother you?

Personally I can think of 10,000 other things more offensive to me than someone wishing me any sort of happy occasion, no matter what they call it... damn, tell me to have a happy flag day for all I care! It just seems a complete waste of an outrage to squander it on "Merry Christmas"...

I think we should also acknowledge Ramadan too...but then again, I am kinda an evil pagan heathen that enjoys pagan culture.

Oddly "suck my dick" is inanely more politically correct than Merry Christmas many times....what does that say about our world?  (disclaimer: these statements should in no way be interpreted to reflect my own adoration of the activity that is oral sex).

Great post julia!
I don't care if someone says "Happy Kwanza", "Happy Winter Solace",

"Merry Christmas", or "Happy Happy".
That is the point, people are to hung up on what or what not to say these days.

"Happy, Happy" works for me.

I think Krusty said it best, " have a merry Christmas, a happy Hanukkah, a kwaazy Kwanza, a tip-top Tet, and a solemn, dignified, Ramadan. And now a word from MY god, our sponsors!"

Of course, the Canting Crew also has some wisdom to offer...

"Hogswatch is coming,
The pig is getting fat,
Please put a dollar in the old man's hat
If you ain't got a dollar a penny will do
And if you ain't got a penny then -- "

Not in the least. Also I have never met someone who expressed to me they were offended by well wishes. But I suppose that is just my happy luck.

My personal opinion is that when one of the main things to be pissy/offended/huffy  about at any time of year is a wish of merry this or happy that... well that's just silly and I don't pay those people much attention at all. I celebrate main stream holidays.... but I also celebrate my own and I've been wished Happy ___random holiday___ by lots of different denominations--- I've only been joyful that they thought of me with goodness in mind. I do try to be thoughtful of others though and pay attention to what they say to people or what I know they celebrate.

One of my slaves is jewish so I know most of the jewish holidays and we celebrate those and christian ones alike in the home although its more of a cultural celebration since we are both agnostic.

Hell, I tell Muslims "Merry Christmas."
What do you think?

Oh, and like Larry the cable guy says I hope they all get a wicker basket full of snakes for Christmas.

IMO it is as wrong to take offense at a sincerely well intended sentiment as it is to blithely and selfishly ignore the full state of affairs.

I've never met anyone honestly offended at being told merry christmas, but I've met plenty of people pissed off at the idea of making the more inclusive and practical sentiment of happy holidays- which is really ironic.

you people need to get out of my head... I read a thread, hoping to put in my 2c and before I get to the last post I end up reading my 2c...

I have gotten to the point that I dont wish anyone merry christmas or happy holidays or anything else unless I know their religous background and can give them the proper regard. I personaly saw a guy rage out over happy holidays. "You can tell me Merry Christmas or nothing at all" Me personally, if someone wished me a happy ________ even if there are a total of 7 people that believe that religion and it was the dumbest thing in the world to believe in, I would return the sentiment and know that the person just wished me a good day or whatever the timeframe was of that holiday.

Where I used to work, they decorate with a Christmas tree, lights, etc.  One year the HR department had convinced the powers that be that "Merry Christmas" had to be removed from the vocabulary.  So we had a "Holiday Party" and a "Holiday Luncheon" and all employees got "Holiday Bonuses" and were wished "Happy Holidays."

About 80% of the employees were pissed.  They wanted Christmas.

The following year, the CEO came out and gave his annual Holiday Luncheon speech.  He's loved by pretty much everyone there.  At the end of his speech, he stuttered a bit and then said, "And I want to wish you all MERRY CHRISTMAS!"  All 500'ish employees in attendance stood up and cheered.

I have always said Merry Christmas.  Now I'll sometimes say "Merry Christmas, or whichever holiday you celebrate!"   It feels less generic than "Happy Holidays" to me, saying I celebrate Christmas but really just want to wish them goodness.

Here in Australia it's Merry Christmas ... we aren't so PC ... this is a country that celebrates Christmas, whether or not you are particularly religious it seems! And I seem to see plenty of people from other cultures ravaging the shops too, and fighting over the last Christmas lights LOL! There was a push this year to stop store Santas saying "ho ho ho!" as that could be taken as an insult, but that was rapidly quashed as ridiculous! Santa's always said "ho ho ho!" The word ho isn't used here as an insulting name for a female anyway, American culture hasn't quite invaded that far yet, and I hope it never does. And as Master and His Dad are sleeping off an overly large Christmas lunch, I will give you all a wave and an unabashed MERRY CHRISTMAS! ... and you can interpret that gesture of goodwill towards whichever holiday you want!

So MERRY CHRISTMAS MzMia,  and to everyone else as well. I not scared to say it, and I think We can also say 'Happy Idul Fitri' , have a great Passover, celebrate Budda's birthday and as for the Hindus - they have so many Holy Days it's just fantastic - Celebrate them all, I say, with some pagan rituals and animism thrown in for the Goddess' sake ....
PS Here in Australia, We did Christmas before You
