Benji, hey, I do the same on Christmas as you do on Hannukah.
My whole purpose in life is to "offend" people!
So if saying "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Hannakah" will do the job I'm all for it!

Pardon me?  Not sure what I do on hannukah....

My point was that people act surprised when I tell them I do nothing on their day, so I explain it by showing them that they do nothing on my day.

Generally, I don't like to offend people, especially not in my line of work....

Yours,

benji

I made a suggestion to my coworkers that instead of Merry Christmas they simply wish someone Happy Holidays.
Almost every religion has a holiday in the general timeframe, so it worked. Out here in Nashville, it is a pretty safe guess whomever you are tlaking to is a Christian, especially where I work, so Merry Christmas is fine.
And if someone can be offended by being wished happiness for anything ... tough.
That is like someone taking offense to me telling them to have a nice night just becasue they think their nights going to be shitty...

I think life is too short to be offended by someone wishing me a happy anything. I try not to sweat the small stuff.

I say Merry Christmas, and if someone gets offended that is their problem. With me it has nothing to do with relgion, but has everything to do with the holiday tradition I grew up with.

Yes the PC crap has gone way too far.

Merry Christmas to all!!!

I love what many here have said, this PC crap has gone way too far.
Soon we will have to say "Happy and include about 80 things with it"

**Merry Christmas** is what I am going to enjoy saying all day!

See?  The only ones I ever see actually getting upset about this are the ones who are actually saying merry christmas.  That's just so weird to me.

I think that you are right...

I have one fundie brother who gets bent out of shape because of things like this, it does tend to be Christians that get upset when people say something besides "Merry Christmas" and want to make sure that everyone knows that no PC tree hugging liberal is going to make them stop!

Most of us PC tree hugging liberals don't care

Say whatcha wanna say, freedom of speech! Although your boss may have different ideas... their right, they pay your paycheck and if they do not want their employees talking about Christ-Mass, they have the right to say that on their dime you will not be saying that....

My original post aside, I may just tell people "Allah Bless you and keep you" the next time someone wishes me a Merry Christmas just because I am ornery

Well of course you can say whatever you want. But your comment about 'if someone gets offended that is their problem' if you say something to someone without being thoughtful and not caring about how someone might feel about it, than that is just plain rude and mean. For example...have you ever seen the type of person that says 'hi how are you doing?' and by the time you open your mouth to answer they are halfway down the hallway and are turning the corner not even caring to hear your answer or how you feel? That is exactly the same thing, don't just say something to say it, especially if you want to say something with good intentions, say it thoughtfully with regard to the other person you are saying it too. And if you don't have good intentions, like you said, you basically don't care about how someone feels about it if they get offended, than don't say it at all.

This happens all the time to me at work, it's not personal, usually it's just because they're trying to get through the freaking metal detectors and still manage to get to work on time.  It's a greeting, not a therapy session.  Accept the fact that when people say "hey how's it going?" or "Merry Christmas" they are intending to give a little kindness to those around them without taking on all your personal issues oh and by the way MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Actually, I have not tried or implied to tell anyone what to say.

My point was/is---people should NOT be afraid to say "Merry Christmas".

I am not sure how that got lost in translation!

If you want to say "Merry Christmas" say it!  If you don't want to say it, who is forcing you?

Why would anyone be afraid of saying it?

Have you ever had anyone jump down your throat because you said it?

Why is this an issue, who made it one in the media?

Did you read my OP?

We are encouraged not to say it at work, many other people have stated they are not
encouraged or supposed to say it at work.

If someone is paying you for your time, then they get to tell you what is inappropriate to talk about at work, they get to do that because they are paying you for your time.  They are not dictating how you should speak outside of work, are they? I still do not see this as a real issue....I do not see this as anymore troublesome than a boss that tells an employee not to be an evangelical at work
