It isn't hurting your insides, Cali [;)]; I'm strongly considering going to a Paleo/carnivore diet, at least for awhile, see how I like it.

Isn't paleo a no-dairy thing?  GoodLordHaveMercy, I can't give up the dairy. LOL.  Cheese is my friend.

Cali

LOL, I know, I'd marry cheese if people wouldn't look at me funny [8D]

Kumasan2 -> RE: High Protein, Low Carb Diet (1/1/2008 10:56:11 AM)

And be sure to look for the low net carb chocolate bars out there.  I usually found mine in the drug store, near the diet aids.  I'm an admitted chocoholic and the first time I had one after being on Atkins for about six weeks by that time was, and I'm not kidding, better than sex.

I used them as rewards for keeping on track or for special occasions.   I lost 55 lbs in about six months which has, unfortunately, come back due to life's difficulties.

Best of luck to you!

CalifChick -> RE: High Protein, Low Carb Diet (1/1/2008 11:03:28 AM)

Oh, Beverly?  No alcohol.  Not for a good solid month at least.  Put the wine down and walk away slowly. LOL.

Aww, Kuma, unfortunate about the turn of events.  My "tally" is 60 in 6 months, most in the first 3 months.  I had a serious re-evaluation of my life on July 1, and I plan to never go back.  When the clients were bringing in the chocolate and the goodies at Christmas, I kept chanting the mantra to our receptionist, "skinny is better than chocolate... skinny is better than chocolate" (although the last time I was skinny, I think I was about 11 yrs old [;)]).

FangsNfeet -> RE: High Protein, Low Carb Diet (1/1/2008 11:10:45 AM)

I could eat whatever I wanted as long as I stayed under number of Total Carbs allowed that day.

Bacon and eggs every morning but now biskets or pancakes.
All the Roast beef I can pile up but no potatos.
Brawt Wurst are yummie.
Tunna Fish Salad
Any meat Grilled, baked, and or smoked.
All the Hamburger Patties I could mustur.

In my case, it was all about the carbs.

Alcohol itself isn't a source of carbs; the mixers are the guilty parties here.  It's also a huge source of empty calories which is never good.  Though according t this site: http://www.carbs-information.com/carbs-in-alcohol.htm drinking a glass of wine as benefit for blood pressure, etc. is allowable.  That site is a great resource for information and questions.  Your mileage may, of course, vary.

My last time as "skinny" was when I got out of basic training, at 178lbs.  That was a looooong time ago.  Thanks for the sympathy.  Once I get out of the very unpleasant living situation I'm currently in, and into a place of my own, I plan on getting back on that carbo horse and never going back either.

I was thinking along the lines of "if it didn't walk on its own...", and trying to get the best start possible.  The first time you get on the scale, if you can wait a week from when you start, is just the best thing.  As with everything, YMMV.

MsBearlee -> RE: High Protein, Low Carb Diet (1/1/2008 11:28:59 AM)

Level…I have no idea of I am either diabetic or insulin resistant.  Last year I got an ‘elevated’ blood sugar level of 101…and scoffed at the idea it was high (since I read 100 is okay).  While I have no idea what it should be…I just want to be healthier.  I’ve always been active; of late…not so much.  I know it’s cuz I need to loose weight; how can I possibly be carrying an extra 35 pounds and wonder why my back hurts?  …big boobs not withstanding!  LOL
I’m lucky in that I just want to be trim by my birthday.  I remember doing something like this several years ago; and dropped 30 pounds in a month.  If I do half that…I’ll hit my goal long before July!
I’m with you, Sir…I think I’ll count total carbs; not only is it easier (math is NOT my forte), but that way I’m less apt to get into trouble with a couple extra garbanzo beans (next month).  <grinz>
Cali…thanks so much for your comments; AND the receipes!  Oh, and OB, I’ve made those cheese chips as a garnish before!  If ya use a non-stick pan, you can even do it without the butter.
<sigh>  Do we ever get over the fear of fats?
Seriously, Level….. pork rinds?  OMFG    Okay, she says opening her mind a bit, do you have a brand name for some that don’t taste like salty packing material?   LOL  I bet they DO make a pretty good crust though.
Kumaaaaaaaaaa!!!  (You ARE the Kuma I know, aren’t you?)  Thanks for the encouragement…  and get back to it, kiddo!  <smiles>
Thanks everybody!!!  Especially the recipes, lauren!   I think I’m gonna eat very low carb for a few days, so I can quit throwing food away.   (except the crackers…they’re already crumbled out by the bird feeders…with the really good, multi-grain bread.  sigh)  I can’t bear to keep throwing food away…most of it IS okay, actually.  I'm happy my dog likes
Anyway…then I think I’ll do pure protein, like Fang and Level.  Hell, I’ve been red-meat deprived!
B

lauren0221 -> RE: High Protein, Low Carb Diet (1/1/2008 11:34:34 AM)

I originally dissed the pork rinds too Bearlee, but they are a great accoutrement when you need crunch:)

Also, I FEEL so much better not eating sugar and simple carbs. Ate sugar and white flour for a few days last week, and I felt like crap. I really noticed it.

Level -> RE: High Protein, Low Carb Diet (1/1/2008 11:45:03 AM)

The one thing I don't like about the pork rinds is the fact that they are high in sodium, but eaten occasionally, I can deal with them. And yes, they make a great batter [X(]

A fasting blood sugar of 100 to 126 is pre-diabetic, and I would watch it like a hawk. Mine was 102 in mid-2004, I think, and by December 2006, it had sky-rocketed to 339.

Blood sugar yesterday morning - 78 [;)] No meds!

Thank you lauren [;)]

This is a great thread to do my usual pimping for Gary Taubes' book Good Calories, Bad Calories. It is a life-changing, and exceptional read.

EvilGenie -> RE: High Protein, Low Carb Diet (1/1/2008 12:14:12 PM)

~FR~

I am a low carb freak now and found it extremely hard to drop the carbs. I did, however, keep using 2 tsp of sugar in my one cup of coffee per day. I don't do low carb to lose weight as I cannot due to the damned growth disorder. The disorder, unique in the world to me, they have now found that is caused by non-functioning insulin receptors genetically. This in turn produces something very close to acromegaly. They had to construct new charts for measuring my insulin level.

I do low carb to feel better and I do. I have much more sustainable energy and my overall feeling of wellbeing and health is wonderful. I have never had high blood pressure and have low cholesterol levels to begin with. I simply dragged through my days until I knocked out the carbs. I have recently become diabetic though not in the classic sense. My blood sugar is trying to compensate for my insulin levels. The diabetic side has always been well controlled.

Am I a strictinarian about it? Nope. If I am jonesing for something, which is rare as the disorder shut down my appetite completely at age 20, I have it and then go back to what I normally do.

I have a volume of low carb recipes of my own creation if anyone is looking to have a broader range or to satisfy a craving and still remain low carb. Just CMail me and I will be happy to help. Please know though that I am extremely busy and it could take 1-7 days before I am able to get back to you in the way that you need.

Best,

EG

Well, if ya make a batter and don't ADD salt, it could work!  As I said, I'm keeping an open mind!  I remember that fast I did and what I missed was crunch...course, that was 21 days; I don't have to go that long, do I?

OMG...Thank you sooooooooo much, Level!  I had no idea that was a 'pre diabetic' reading!!!  Okay, it was awhile ago I got the reading...but I AM doing something now; thanks, in part, to you Level!  I'm older than you, but am not yet in really, really bad shape...so perhaps I'm very lucky.  Ya know, I'm already feeling better.  Thank you so much!!!

proudsub -> RE: High Protein, Low Carb Diet (1/1/2008 3:22:21 PM)

Hi MsBearlee,
I've followed the South Beach way of eating for 4 years now. I'd be happy to answer your questions.

quote:

Jiicama, speghetti squash or if I'll ever be able to eat the new multi-grain pastas that are touted to be a good source of protein and ALA Omega-3?  (hmmmm...I just added that word multi-grain...perhaps that is my answer.  <sigh>)

Spagetti squash is great for all phases.  In phase one you can also have the pasta made from 100% soy. You can add back in whole grain pastas after the first two weeks when you move to phase 2.  Be careful of marinera sauces with added sugar.

quote:

I did find this cool carb-counter on Atkin's page:

On SB we don't count carbs.  In fact even phase one isn't really low carb--you can have beans and lots of veggies. I can send you the food lists if you want.

quote:

But in that in the beginning, carbs are such a serious no-no...I really want to know what will be 'okay' to add in later.  I love my fresh veggies...and am just floored that fresh are carbier than canned!  Ugg

After two weeks you can add back in whole grains, most fruits and all veggies.

quote:

Oh...and I just love any number of types of canned beans: kidney, garbanzo, white, black, butterbeans...I could go on.  No more of THESE, either?  I thought beans were high in protein!  Dammit...seem high in carbs, too.  Sheeshhhhhhhh

Those are allowed on all phases.

quote:

I always put jiicama, peppers, beans, carrots, brocolli and such in my salad.  I guess that's gone, too.  Dammit

Not a problem.

quote:

I'm gonna go find what it is I CAN eat for the first month or so!

I strongly urge you to read the SB book.  But i would be happy to send you the food lists and also a link to my SB support board.

quote:

I get the difference in carbs and net carbs…but how does one ‘intuitively’ know which is better to be eating?  Is there a secret or do I have to research every single thing I eat?  (lordy, I’m glad I don’t eat much processed food!).

Just use the food lists for SB, you won't need to research anything.

quote:

Oh...processed cheese = cream cheese?  I like hard cheese, better anyway.  (I nothin like a couple slivers Asiago or Parmigiano-Reggiano with a glass of lovely red wine!)

On SB you can have low fat cheeses on all phases, red wine on phases 2 and 3.

Bev.--I think you are confusing SB with Atkins, there are a lot of differences.

Level -> RE: High Protein, Low Carb Diet (1/1/2008 4:10:42 PM)

proud is indeed right about South Beach, Beverly, but I would humbly state that a tighter control over sugar, starches, and carbs would be more beneficial. [X(]

Rushemery -> RE: High Protein, Low Carb Diet (1/1/2008 4:19:35 PM)

I would go with fresh veg canned has too much salt, always eat in the morning otherwise your body tends to store all the calories you eat. I eat wheat bread and pasta but very little, lots of chicken and turkey and I buy protien powder instead of premade shakes because it seems to be cheeper. I only cook with olive oil and season with dry seasonings, I have no experience with these diets mentioned so I cant comment on them, most people loose water weight first and then it gets a little harder but dont give up

MsBearlee -> RE: High Protein, Low Carb Diet (1/1/2008 4:30:41 PM)

Okay, been remodeling my home and am not finished; my books are all in boxes still.  BUT...I found  the copy of SBD that I have, as well as a little cook-book for the diet.  However, while I've started what must pretty much be Phase I of that diet...as soon as I can get to the store (the only real grocery store in the county is 20 miles away), I plan to set up for something more like Atkins.

I realize Atkins Diet has had a bad rap, but after reading a WHOLE bunch, I think I'm going to spend at least two weeks there.  Or perhaps that Paleo Diet!  WOW.

I am impatient, I don't have the weight to loose some have had, but I feel like I really want a solid jump-start to feeling better and enjoying better health.  I just would not like to see myself slip into diabeties...or end up needing back surgery, for that matter!  Thankfully I'm not so much into sugar; well, unless you count wine!  LOL  What I HAVE noticed is a real surge in starches and carbs the last several months or so; I'm done with 'em!

Proudsub, I'd LOVE a link to your support group...I'm really enjoying all this stuff you people offer.  And...gawd, look at this:  http://www.collarchat.com/searchpro.asp?phrase=Low+Carb&author=&forumid=ALL&topicreply=both&message=body&timeframe=%3E&timefilter=0&language=single&top=300&criteria=AND&minRank=0&sortMethod=r&submitbutton=+OK+

Amazing!  You people are awesome!!!  Thank you so much...

Beverly

Level -> RE: High Protein, Low Carb Diet (1/1/2008 4:58:36 PM)

A friend of mine met South Beach's Dr Agatston once, he told her he believed a Paleo diet is the most healthy one, and that he allowed grains in his diet because "it'd be easier for people to adapt to the plan....they know that people are addicted to grain and it would be too hard for most to give them up totally.... He was trying to make the plan marketable to all and he felt that telling us to eat whole grain is better than what we were doing before..."
