This might not be the right place to put this, Mods feel free to move this as you see fit. This came about partly because of takenbyjohnr07. The man who smiles when things go wrong has thought of someone to blame it on. - Robert Bloch

I'm not afraid of facts, I welcome facts but a congeries of facts is not equivalent to an idea. This is the essential fallacy of the so-called "scientific" mind. People who mistake facts for ideas are incomplete thinkers; they are gossips. - Cynthia Ozick

It is only possible to live happily ever after on a day-to-day basis. - Margaret Bonnano

Ask a deeply religious Christian if he’d rather live next to a bearded Muslim that may or may not be plotting a terror attack, or an atheist that may or may not show him how to set up a wireless network in his house. On the scale of prejudice, atheists don’t seem so bad lately. - Scott Adams

that one is what he is known for (someone likes voltaire) i read Candide a while ago...i don't know where it went to but i remeber it being funny :)
Vonnegut Jr:
  • "Any reviewer who expresses rage and loathing for a novel is preposterous. He or she is like a person who has put on full armor and attacked a hot fudge sundae."
  • "I can have oodles of charm when I want"
  • "We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful what we pretend to be."
  • "So it goes."
  • "We're not too young for love, just too young for about everything there is that goes with love."
  • "You realize, of course, that everything I say is horseshit."

"What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?" -High Fidelity

"It's brilliant, being depressed; you can behave as badly as you like."-High Fidelity

The question with tht voltaire quote is that Im pretty sure its something else, but alas I found the *real* one. Also, its good knowing im not the only one that knows some of these, makes me feel less like a geek.

Monsieur l'abbé, I detest what you write, but I would give my life to make it possible for you to continue to write.

And this one, also from Voltaire

If god did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him.

edit to add: Voltaire is my absolut favorite philosopher, I also absolutely love the musician by the same name.

PrizedPosession -> RE: Quotes for 500, Alex (1/12/2008 1:44:14 AM)

i noticed. The same how Vonnegut is my hero.
i haven't heard of the musician, something new for me to look up. Thanks

Voltaire (musician) does what could best be termed I guess is aucoustic goth, hes a goth that makes goths smile. (which mught be blasphemous, not real sure)

rosanegra -> RE: Quotes for 500, Alex (1/12/2008 1:57:14 AM)

Voltaire the musician is quite awesome. He's also really down to earth. I saw him at Goth Prom in Cincinnati and afterwards he hung out with a bunch of the people who went to the show. We had a lovely conversation, what about I do not remember, because he was quite hot and I was having a nice time fantasizing about him doing evil things to me.

Asherdelampyr -> RE: Quotes for 500, Alex (1/12/2008 1:59:40 AM)

I can certainly understand that. Hopefully me and a few friends of mine will manage to get him to come to Salt Lake. I really really want to see him live. I think it would kick ass

PrizedPosession -> RE: Quotes for 500, Alex (1/12/2008 2:00:47 AM)

i didn't know they were allowed.

i listen to everything so it's ok
thought of anyother one for You: "Mne eto nado kak zuby v zadnitse." which means "I need that like I need teeth in my asshole......" from the short story "Guts" in "haunted"  by Chuck Palahnuik
that story made me want to vomit but i tell everyone to read it cuz i love their reaction after
most of it being along the lines of "why did you let me read that"

On religion:
  • The mystical trend of our time, which shows itself particularly in the rampant growth of the so-called Theosophy and Spiritualism, is for me no more than a symptom of weakness and confusion. Since our inner experiences consist of reproductions, and combinations of sensory impressions, the concept of a soul without a body seem to me to be empty and devoid of meaning.
    - Albert Einstein, letter of February 5, 1921
  • I cannot conceive of a God who rewards and punishes his creatures, or has a will of the kind that we experience in ourselves. Neither can I nor would I want to conceive of an individual that survives his physical death; let feeble souls, from fear or absurd egoism, cherish such thoughts. I am satisfied with the mystery of the eternity of life and with the awareness and a glimpse of the marvelous structure of the existing world, together with the devoted striving to comprehend a portion, be it ever so tiny, of the Reason that manifests itself in nature.
    - Albert Einstein, The World As I See It
  • Question with boldness even the existence of a god; because if there be one he must approve of the homage of reason more than that of blindfolded fear.
-Thomas Jefferson, Letter to Peter Carr, August 10, 1787

  • Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined and imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity.
-Thomas Jefferson, Notes on Virginia, 1782
  • Two different theories exist concerning the origin of children: the theory of Sexual reproduction, and the theory of the stork. Many people believe in the theory of sexual reproduction because they have been taught this theory at school. In reality, however, many of the world's leading scientists are in favor of the theory of the stork. If the theory of sexual reproduction is taught in schools, it must only be taught as a theory and not as the truth. Alternative theories, such as the theory of the stork, must also be taught.
    - from the Institute for Stork Research and Science

Morality
  • If we did a good act merely from love of God and a belief that it is pleasing to Him, whence arises the morality of the Atheist? ...Their virtue, then, must have had some other foundation than the love of God.
-Thomas Jefferson, Letter to Thomas Law, June 13, 1814

Commonality
  • Science and art belong to the whole world, and before them vanish the barriers of nationality.
    -Goethe

Science:
  • I do not know what I may appear to the world, but to myself I seem to have been only a boy playing on the sea-shore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.
    -Isaac Newton
  • The strongest arguments prove nothing so long as the conclusions are not verified by experience. Experimental science is the queen of sciences and the goal of all speculation.
    -Roger Bacon
  • Reason and free inquiry are the only effectual agents against error.
    -Thomas Jefferson

Asherdelampyr -> RE: Quotes for 500, Alex (1/12/2008 2:15:33 AM)

That would be cool, prized.    Curious, yours are too long, good quotes are short things, for the most part, 1, maybe 2 lines.

PrizedPosession -> RE: Quotes for 500, Alex (1/12/2008 2:22:23 AM)

sometimes. i like the long ones but the shorter ones make more impact because everyone is just interested in going and getting the message. sometimes its nice too meander through the words. But that's just me.

and the only extortionatly long is the high fidelity one really.

CuriousLord -> RE: Quotes for 500, Alex (1/12/2008 2:24:31 AM)

Shorter ones are more catchy, but what use are even a thousand empty thoughts?

Asherdelampyr -> RE: Quotes for 500, Alex (1/12/2008 2:33:59 AM)

In order for people to listen, it is often better to form short, concise sentances.

PrizedPosession -> RE: Quotes for 500, Alex (1/12/2008 2:35:45 AM)

But for people to understand one must go in depth, it's not always a thing of listening but hearing and comprehending

CuriousLord -> RE: Quotes for 500, Alex (1/12/2008 2:36:59 AM)

I guess it's the only way to speak to so many.

It's only lately that I've begun to appreciate the depth of material in text books with thousands of pages.  So much knowledge in some of these things.. so incredibly unappreciated.

For those who read, though?  I think some of the longer quotes, like the longer books, have the potential to offer something more meaningful.

Asherdelampyr -> RE: Quotes for 500, Alex (1/12/2008 2:38:52 AM)

Oh that they do, but there is a time (and more accurately in this case) a place for everything. Forums are not where people go to gain in true understanding, it is *usually* where they go to divert themselves.

PrizedPosession -> RE: Quotes for 500, Alex (1/12/2008 2:45:05 AM)

like me! who has a plane back home and had to get up at 7 30 and since i was already up decided to just stay up the whole time!
sorry i ruined Your quote thread from it's original purpose :)

but MAYBE they are having a crisis and looking through quotes and the forums for a distraction and find a long meaningful quote what then? lol

Asherdelampyr -> RE: Quotes for 500, Alex (1/12/2008 2:46:53 AM)

It's original purpose was to amuse me while I count the hours until Im off work for the day, so you havent ruined anything, quite the opposite, in fact. Conversations mature and change, so too must all other forms of communication.
