I have seen slaves commenting in their profiles that "if you can’t spell don’t bother". I can understand that a slave may very much need an intelligent person to be with but is spelling really a true indicator? My father has a Doctorate in Mathematics and Teaches at a University. My Grandfather was considered one of the smartest men in the state and his father had articles about him in the news paper concerning his genius. Obviously, that great wealth of mental capability skipped my generation but those giant men of brain power all had one common trait, they were terrible spellers. An oddity that was discussed openly at every family function. Sadly, the "poor spelling trait" didn’t skip my generation along with the genius. Maybe because I have the Pizza Delivery boy’s eyes. ROFL!!! God that would explain a lot!

So, I guess the question is this; is poor spelling a good indicator of intelligence or lack of it? My personal opinion is that we have the option to spell check via Word first. Maybe its more a sign of laziness?

I for one am a lousy speller...always have been and always will be. That being said...I can't stand when I get messages from someone with obvious errors. We are online. There is always a dictionary easily accessible...use it. I do. You only get one chance to make a good first impression. Take some time and put some effort into your message and you may be surprised at the results. To me poor spelling is definitely a sign more of laziness rather than lack of intelligence. LOL...I probably have at least five spelling errors in this post!

Thanks for your post. I have been fortunate to have interested people in responding to my threads. Im very happy with the "Picture" Thread. I think this one will draw attention as well. Your input is valued and I appreciate it.

BTW, Im from the North East. PA to be exact. I have always been curious how the "Jersey Accent" developed and stayed around. I live on Gilligan’s Island now in the South Pacific but your picture reminds me of the fun wholesome girls back home. I guess Ill be homesick the rest of the day. Im not flirting there. I genuinely miss home.

well...i believe it's laziness....and therefore shouldn't necessarily show a lack of intelligence..unless the goof can't even spell well enuff to mek senz.
I mean...really...anyone who kent spel easezy wurds leik thez kent bea too S M R T.

we all type fast here....atleast fastlane does, which leads to errors in spelling. No big deal.
Some words are confusing and who feels like looking them up? I don't.
Still, if I come across a post that is riddled with mispelled words, bad grammar and puncuation....I do turn my nose up.....sawry.

I don't have a problem with mistakes in posts...since we do type fast. It's the messages sent to a profile that should be error free if possible. They have all the time in the world to compose something correctly.

Online media allows us to check our words. A profile is a long term snapshot of who we are. If we care so little to error check it and make it shiny, that says a lot. No matter how poor a speller a student is, handing in a term paper with mistakes is a bad idea.

When it comes to posting, there's a difference between typos and consistently bad writing. We all make typos and we can read around them. Bad writing just makes it hard to read overall. My particular peeves are the constant ellipses....in between every thought...know what I mean?, the difference between choose and chose, loose and lose, and other little things. Those are MY peeves and while they irk me, I don't make a big deal out of them for anyone else.

With online presentation, words and grammar are the way we learn people's personality. Consistently bad and confusing writing will give the person a personality of being not articulate or someone to have a discussion with.

I agree that spelling and grammatical knowledge is not the be all and end all or intelligence and it's no reason to look down on someone as a person. But it does affect their communication skills, and here online, that's a big deal.

Oooops.....Fastlane runs back to the dictionary to see how many words he mispelled while messaging Aileen......whew, only five out of then words...I'm batting .500

It just depends what youre into girls.

I find someone who insists in casual conversation I make certain everything is perfect to be pedantic.

Im stylized and even if i cant be bothered to spell it right some chicks dig me for it.

Go figure!!

Im smarter than most people i meet and im a much harder worker than most of them too.

From my point of view i just have better things to do than try to relive my schooling to please pendants.

Something tells me that we are both happy we can suss each other out so that we arent bothered.

I suggest you watch the spelling bees on espn, wait 10 years, then get jiggy baby!!!

The only problem I have with grammar and spelling is in a profile. A profile is your "advertisment" and basic "introduction" to everyone here. One thing that bothers me in particular is the use of "dominant" and "dominate" in the wrong context, especially when used by a Dominant!

I said this in an earlier notestream but I'll repeat it here. I'm amazed that people won't make any effort to check their spelling (even automated checks) or their grammar before they send a message that could be seen by hundreds or a letter to someone they want to impress, but will spend time washing their clothes and body, putting on deodorant, combing hair and generally trying to look good before going to the supermarket.

This is a text medium. The only thing we know about each other is in the messages we exchange. Before hitting "enter" consider the impression the message conveys.

I've taught high school English, worked as a newspaper reporter, and a creative writer for an
advertising agency. Above my my computer I have taped the following quote from Ernest Hemmingway:

"We are all apprentices as a craft, where no one ever becomes a master."

To err is human. We all make typos. We all have brain farts and freezes.

That said... everything we write, reveals something about us. When you write, you are entirely
naked - except for your words.

How do you want to be perceived? Smart... with a well hung vocabulary?
Or lazy... with a limp dictionairy?

even though, this has been rehashed 20 times,..ok,,,,i play along when i can.

in MY eyes i just do not care. poo on people. either like me as i am or go away.
now to Mistress. SHE says it is something i am going to have to watch closer all the time.

i do not as yet understand.

I view it as a sign of laziness. I'm willing to bet that every single one of us has spell checker somewhere on our computers. Take the two seconds to run it through your email, post or profile. I promise you I'm worth the extra 2 seconds.

i absolutely agree with Aileen68 on the subject of your "Profile" text. i especially dislike seeing huge glaring typos there.

As an example (and this person was from the USA and all - i am a lot more forgiving, obviously to someone who's first language isn't English) i was reading someone's Profile that siad something akin to this:

"I beleave a domenit should be caring and tendar and also firm. I'm loking for an enteligent woman to be my salve. I would like sumone who will be on my level for convarsatin."

And to me... that's just no excuse for that. The message they sent me had spelling that was equally as horrible. I mean.... there are children in grade school who can spell better than that, you know?

Also people who write chat-speak like they were a teenager, that immediately turns me off too. This like:

"u sound kewl. lets talk more 2 c if we r alike. do u want?"

.........Those things are unforgiveable in my mind! Ack. i just can't deal with them!

That said. i don't need someone to spell perfectly, i don't! Some words i constantly struggle with (but i will actually make use of online dictionaries to peek at a few words before submitting posts, just to double check spelling). ~ i don't need posts and messages to me to be written perfectly.... ~ and they definitely don't have to be grammatically correct (heaven knows my grammar sucks!).

^_^ Some consistent spelling errors make me smile. Like i have a friend who constantly misses the word "taunt". They mean to use the word "taut" but they always write it "taunt" and it always makes me smile inside 'cause i think it's cute. ~ Another friend miswrites the expression "To all intents and purposes". It's clear by the way they write it out that they have only ever heard the expression spoken and they "misheard it". They always type "To all intensive purposes" ...heh... and i like their idea of intensive purposes....... :)

It reminds me of when i was a kid and my step-dad would gripe about the electric bill. Whenever i left a light on in the room he'd say "Stalking the electric company" .... OR.. at least that's what i thought he was saying. It's only when i was an adult and he happened to say it to my much younger sister that i caught it right. He'd been saying "Stock in the electric company" ... (but anyway.. i got off topic there -pth-)

To be succinct - yes... spelling does matter in some ways....... but grammar matters less... and proper punctuation hardly matters to me at all. Heh.

You speak intelligently in your posts. The one above contains great irony. I am not picking on you, but "sentance" is actually spelled "sentence." I mention this only to point out that everyone, self included, makes errors in our writing on occasion. You just picked a bad place to make one.

There is an ancient Usenet rule (well as ancient as Usenet can get) that anyone making a criticism of another poster's spelling will make one in the post.
