Play loud music and sing along at the top of my (off key) voice.  Getting lost in a good book.  Watching a movie that makes me cry.

Oh yeah, nothing like driving the neighbors batty with the loud music! lol I love it! You know, very few movies make me cry. In fact, I laughed through Titanic. I thought it was hysterical when the people were falling off the ship. I know, I know, cold hearted bitch that I am <shugs> I just didn't find it all that sad. I did cry while watching Old Yeller and Bambi. Must be something about animals being hurt that bother me more than people being hurt.

There is nothing better than "make up sex" when the emotions are still riding high and feelings are raw and vulnerable. Of course that alone could work against  you. But most times for me, it doesn't. It's all good <s>

agree!!  damn good :D, but don't forget to solve the real issue aftherwards  ;)

I find writing to be a great release. If something is bothering me I can write about it and when finished I feel like the weight of the world has been lifted off my shoulders.

MsLadySue,
I have journals that date back to the 80's when I was in my 20's. I look back at that time and thank God that I wrote, as I surely would have gone insane. Writing is very therapeutic and a great outlet. Thank you for sharing.

< TRUE CONFESSION>  I cry, actually I bawl, every time Spock dies in Wrath of Kahn, even though he comes back to life in the next movie.

Well as a Star Trek fan myself, I have to agree that there is something about Spock holding his fingers against the glass and saying goodbye to Kirk. <Sigh> I will confess I did cry on that. Then I had to go beat my sub lol

I find taking the time for release, a little mini-break from whatever is causing the tension, helps put it in perspective so that a solution is more easily found.

Yes hat is wise to do. It often prevents, in fights, that you don't say the things you would regret later.
Sadly I have a problem to take them.

hello MistressofGa

I really like this topic..and am reading the thread with interest because I am also looking for different forms of release.

  ok...laugh is you must but...
one that really helps me right now with pent up stuff and general mood stabilizing is dancing like crazy...
most of the time its even alone.   I put on some motivating tunes ( loudly) and dance like crazy...

think>  scene from the movie " the breakfast club".

well music has always had a way of effecting me emotionally anyway....so I guess this is no big stretch a little further..

It even helps me in the mornings, while driving to work, to play certain songs for myself and put me in the right brain space and uplift my spirit to start the day on a positive upbeat mood...  I can, personally, tell the difference when I don't play that Cd ( self created with songs I have picked out ) and play something softer or melancholy...or worse> listen to the news radio on the way to work...ack.

Food abuse is no longer an option I want in my life....and masturbation is not always an option for me.....and Tysons whip isn't 3000 miles long, unfortunately.

...so I dance my ass off !!

Personally, I have yet to find a way to obtain release. Was reading all the responses hoping to find a good one. I like Justme's idea.

One of my main releases, if you can't guess is photography.
I love to watch get the angle on the shot,
and take the picture.
I love to edit.
I love other peoples reactions.

Respectfully, LTP

Reading has always been my biggest outlet release.  Next to that writing.  I have journals off and online out the ying yang, forums that I have gone to, to work out the diffculties in my life.... music has always been good....playing a rpg game helps at times.... driving has always been a wonderful release.  The freedom on the road.. the opportunities of where to go next.. and sometimes just racing down a highway.. its such a rush.  Unfortunetly a rush that my adult brain can't enjoy anymore.  I've always wished I could race on Nascar!!  As a teenager I thought nothing of reckless driving, but as an adult its absolutely impossible to allow myself the pleasure.  Maybe one day I will drive cross country, finding a road no one uses anymore and just flyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.  TV lately has been a great outlet for me.  I used to hate watching it........  Cleaning is also a great outlet, especially when I'm mad!  ha  Running is a great outlet that my broken body barely lets me do anymore.  We have a huge trampoline and that is also helpful.  I used to go the YMCA and do aerobic classes and work out until I could barely walk.  God love those aerobic instructers that kept pushed you, making you want to push yourself.  Making it very easy to overdo it.  Nothing like a "good" sore.  Being so tired and whipped that you can barely walk and knowing you just did something awesome for your body!

Masturbation and snuggling.

Just the simple physical touching and being together, not doing anything else, just knowing that person is there for you and you are there for them, touching eachother gently- allowing myself to just BE there and connected, very much a release for me.

Non sexually...quite honestly, almost everything for me centers around extremely strong, violent, pain.
I am not sure I would call it a 'release' though, unless I am thinking in terms of tension release. Clear, biting, strong pain centers me, clears my mind, and calms me down.
There have been times that pain has led to an increase in wanting sex; but it's rare.

MoGa, what a timely thread and one I do not have the slightest answer for. Why? Because at the moment  and for a long while I have been under tremendous stress and pain. I have not been able to find any single outlet that I used to use to release any of it.

The saddest part of it is that all of this has taken the joy out of the activities that I once loved. I think when you have stress and pain (the bad kind, emotional) for too long, you go into a protective mode where your mind just goes NUMB to all stimulus.

So nothing feels as intense, the pain, or the pleasure, It all just feels sort of numb. You can still be highly functioning as a person, but you don't feel the intensity that you used to feel in either a negative or positive way.

That is the worst part of it, for me, since I am, or was a very intense person.

Interestingly, the only thing that seems to cheer me up sometimes, is the forum, how weird is that?

back when i could drive i'd climb in the car and blast something loud and obnoxious and sing at the top of my lungs as i drove off someplace to be alone.  since i can't do that anymore and i'm not able to go storming off for a walk, i'll hide inside a good book and ignore the world for awhile.  i'm not answering anyone, i'm not doing anything for anyone, i'm taking a mental health hour, talk to me later.  writing helps too.  poetry if i'm really upset, a journal entry if i'm just aggrevated.

Martial arts - particularly the traditional kind, where balance, harmony, meditation, and harmonizing of one's chi are of primary importance.  Strengthening and rebalancing myself from the inside out is an incredible way to release stress.

Snuggling works wonders too, and I found that getting a dog was an amazing thing.  I got a rescue dog, and he needs to be walked a LOT - walking him and talking to him, and then spending time grooming him (he has a long coat) each day really bring down the blood pressure, giving me lots of time to decompress.

excellent suggestion Dari, i have two lap dogs that i adore and i can talk to, they're wonderful at keeping secrets and giving you a shoulder to lean on.  they don't stand there and tell you you're full of it and offer bad advice either!
