greetings kitttty,

considering i've never been inside a mosque, i'm not sure you can blame my own personal beliefs regarding islam on "what the mosque teaches."

wahhabism is the basis for saudi arabia, al-qaeda, and the taliban - just because al-qaeda's interpretation of wahhabism is more strict than saudi arabia's does not make it a different fundamentalist tradition altogether.

i don't believe islam was 100% perfect in the seventh century and should never change. all muslims believe that the qur'an is the literal word of god - in this way, yes, islam is "fundamentalist" as a whole. however, sharia, for example, was codified two to four centuries after the qur'an was revealed, this time by an elite group of scholars who in many cases were far more interested in putting in their own ideas about things (such as notions of modesty and women) than actually reflecting anything about the religion. traditionalist sharia is for the most part irreconcilable with contemporary notions of democracy and human rights; it's also extremely static. the qur'an, however, is a living text, and islam is an evolving religion - those are not static, and they are applicable to contemporary democracy and human rights.

respectfully,
annabelle.

Muslim leaders divert attention from their failures by blaming Israel for making Muslims feel slighted

I think Israel does more than slight people.  It has a massive army, equipped to very high standards - and illegal nuclear weapons.  It operates, in many regards, a form of apartheid.  Its not Muslim leaders alone who decry its actions, the world's media reports on them every day.  The same media that you have quoted to prove your points.  Why do you believe what is written on one page but not on another?

Where is the madrassa for reformist muslims? Where are their pupils going? Nowhere- if this exists, it's almost unheard of.

That's a very good point and I don't deny that the answer is beyond my knowledge.  However, moderate and progressive Muslims can't be supported in increasing their influence by scare-mongering.  Do consider, many of those who claim simply to be concerned by security issues are in fact unreconstructed racist xenophobes who hate Islam of any kind.
