Lucky girl indeed: I would be jealous, if I didn't have my own dose of it :-) .

Well of course you do. That is evident :) Any man would be nuts not to be absolutely in adoration and love with you.. Thank you for starting this thread kittin, it caused me to go back to when we first met, and read all of our letters, it was a lovely and moving experience, and brought back some amazing memories. I love love! .

Love isnt a single solitary thing, to be honest we should do as the greeks do and add a few more words to define the kind of love we feel. The way I love a partner is totally different to the way I love my family, the way I love different partners changes too. Love can be the stupid romatic throw yourself in despite any logic or it can be safe and protective.

We seem to confuse the different types of love and throw them all together, because we cant really have a lust filled, passionate, dramatic type of love if we also want stability and security, they are mutually exclusive, we may see the safe type of love as boring but it is the one that will last us for the longest of times, it is nothing to sniff at.

We can lament easier on the concept of love when in the first flush of relationships when we can use flowered rhetoric and poetry, but that is limiting the actual complexity of loving someone else. We can listen to beautiful love inspired music and then wish that was the type of love that we have its the type we associate with the term easiest but it may not be the type that sticks with us.

While it has it's problems, Heinlein's take has always made a decent operational definition for me:

Love is that state when the happiness of an other is essential to my own happiness.

& his book 'Time Enough For Love' could serve as textbook to discussions about what love is . . . . .

My 2 pennies, for the moment . . . . .

I'm a sucker for believing that what makes us human is more than mere chemical reactions in our brains, and I believe love IS one of those things that defines our humanity. What do you think?

I think youre first 3 words are the truest youve ever uttered. We're animals, and love is just an evolutionary adaptation to ensure that the male sticks around long enough to raise children to a point where they are reasonably self sufficient. And youve seen what happens when they dont.

Chemical reactions that decline in intensity and after 7 years are virtually gone.

This outlook explains soooo much.

Does that make it any less magical for the people who experience it?

Speak for yourself. That's hardly a universal truth. I still feel genuine love for my ex-wife, who dumped me in 1986 and whom I haven't seen in 20 years.

No, it doesnt make it any less "magical" to recognize something for what it is.

I wont comment on the second statement.

Damm Cruel...when I don't know what I'm talking about in a particular subject,I just don't post.
You seem to have a different policy where that is concerned.

love is an action word - something one person shows another

anyone can say "i love you" without really meaning it but showing the action of how much one is loved lays the difference.

You mean that to love is a verb, first and foremost. It was touched upon at the beginning of this (ancient) thread. I agree with you.

So then by your definintion as animals women never leave their children and partners, give me a sec ill just ring my mum and tell her we have been living in an alternate universe for the last ten years. Bollocks is it just chemicals and also there is no logic to much of the feelings surrounding love. If it was just for men women wouldnt feel it, and I bloody well have.
