Metric is easy - doing the conversions to imperial is hell. Shouldn't have to bother - though I still think of people in terms of feet and pounds.

HEY - btw you non-expat Brits. Do you still have those chocs which looked like smarties on growth hormones? Toffe like center, chocolate layer then a candy shell? ("Melts in your mouth, not in your hands." - jeez, the power of advertising to remember that but not the name, after over forty years, I mean twenty years...)

Which is another remember to add here - How many advertising slogans and jingles can you remember from the murky mists of your youth. It's scary how accurately I rember jingles. Get out of my head!

Z.

they're called m&m's and yes they're still around, they come in the plain chocolate or with peanuts or almonds in them now too.  commercial jingles?  anyone remember the frito bandito?  "please don't squeeze the charmin?"  "you can't fool mother nature?"  "everything's better with blue bonnet on it?"  the hawiian punch guys?  orville reddenbacker?  "and that's the way it is..."?  bullwinkle and rocky the flying squirrel?  boris and natasha badenov?  breshnev?  and the memories just keep coming, lol!

Jan 2003???   That was an ice storm and not much of one at that.    I remember 16 inches of snow in 1993, they called out the National Gaurd for that one.

Muttling, I wasn't living there in 93, or I would have remembered THAT one <s>

Hmmm..you would think with as much snow as Nashville saw, they would have been prepared for snow by now.

If no one has corrected this yet, let me be the first.

The lyrics are not BLACK kid....it is BLIND kid.

Which kind of fits better with the song <s>

Although I didn't have to Google this as The Who (Peter Townshend, mmmm) was my favorite band back then, Google could be your best friend :)

Interestingly enough, our school schedules still have 20 snow days built into them but they don't let school out early if they're not used and teachers don't get paid extra for working the extra month of days.

As for equipment, we haven't had a good snow in over a decade so why should we be prepared?   After all, maintaining that equipment costs money.

These were great!  The Hawaiian Punch Guys - hahaha, I had forgotten about them.  How 'bout, "If you think it's butter, but it's not....it's Chiffon"

Remember Super Sugar Crisp cereal before they changed the name?

Not true. The snow storm of 03 was very bad. If you don't believe me, try telling what you said above to those who were stranded in their cars for hours and hours on that day because there was not enough snow plows to dig them out. For days after that snow, there were still cars in the ditches on the interstate. YOU may not think that THAT snow day was worthy of equipment, but I bet about 400 other people thought so. That includes me when two of those cars ended up in my front yard.

On a personal note, it was one of the worse days of my life. My brother died in hospice that day and BECAUSE of the snow I didn't get to see him before he passed.

We can continue to debate this, but let's just agree to disagree on this subject.

Yes, that's what New Orleans thought too.  I am sure that tune has changed today.

What equipment in New Orleans? I seem to remember structures failing because the federal Government- as the Corps of Engineers- didn't bother to do maintenance or build appropriate structures, although they a spectacular job of building a funnel to drive storm surge into a ten foot drainage canal levy.
I'm a Native of the place and still live here. Don't bash the City for Federal incompetence.

And speaking of New Orleans... I remember a nickel to get on the streetcar, and it always had nuns in full penguin turnout on it, before Vatican II.
I remember the French Market being full of seafood and game just like it had been since the 18th century.
I remember Mardi Gras being one week, and fun for kids because the crowds were a safe size.
McKenzies King Cake that started on Epiphany, not at Christmas because people can't just eat coffee cake with their eggs.
I remember a little bit of segregation, and the uproar that surrounded letting black people in to everywhere.
And landing on the moon, Nixon's resignation, the whole drawn out mess of Watergate.
Playing outside all day.
No drive by shootings.
Very little traffic.
We had all Saints Day off to go to the Cemeteries and clean up; it was a festive big day like in the rest of Central and South America >D.
Everybody walked all over, and everybody was thin.
Being sent to the corner store to get something for my Mom and having them charge it.
Scary pictures of Vietnam on the news.
A lot of amputees from the war. Just as scary as the news.
Platform shoes.

Funny, I remember that slogan as a kid growing up in London.  They were called "Treets" but maybe later re-branded as  M&Ms.
