Now, the sheriff's deputies from Stark County, Ohio who allegedly used excessive force during a strip search 15 months ago face a federal lawsuit, and recently released video won't help their case. ----- When those who are supposed to uphold the law instead pervert it to their own ends, there is no law. The ugly American is ascendant.

I fucking well hope the sheriff and his deputies go to trial: I couldn't watch the footage till the end. It is terrifying how ordinary people are at the mercy of police brutality and power-crazy officers. This woman went through a terrifying ordeal, in the name of what? Police are here to protect the law and citizens, but all too often they are caught in situations where they abuse people: this case is outrageous, a clear violation of this woman's human rights.

I saw this some days ago and watched the video clips - part one and two. Some of the video surveillance is 'missing' and clearly two male officers are not only present when the woman was having her clothes removed, but physically 'hands on' in the procedure. I certainly don't condone the actions of the police officers, I would like to be able to view the missing surveillance tape/s which recorded what took place prior to this woman 'being lifted off her feet and slammed to the ground'. There is no doubt that the male officers behaved improperly, and it raises a lot of questions regarding procedure, but also what else took place that we, the viewer of those clips, aren't privy to. Not for a moment am I suggestion that she, or any one else, should have their basic human rights abused. I would like to know what occured from the moment the patrol car pulled up, why the camera wasn't running at that particular time, what occurred from the moment the woman laid her had against the officer and later on, from the moment she was taken into the station.

"The duties and responsibilities of county jails across Ohio are set forth in the Minimum Standards for Jails in Ohio. Many of these obligations are unpleasant to undertake, particularly those dealing with difficult or troubled inmates, however, the regulations are necessary to ensure the safety of the inmate."

Camille, I'm not sure what part of their actions was for the safety of that particular 'inmate'. She had been assaulted, yet rapidly became an 'inmate', at what point, for what reason? The Sheriff has a lot to answer for.

When I was a kid, a policeman meant safety. With the repeated and continous stories of abuse towards citizens I can not say they mean safety to me any longer. I've learned to never ever volunteer information, say nothing without a lawyer present. I've learned that there is a 'they' and they are not to be trusted. It feels like a foundation has crumbled beneath my feet and I don't like it.

How can they justifiy that they're protecting an inmate's safety taking away her dignity?! What better way to make a person go insane than to do what they did to her? It's so fucked-up I'm gasping. How did we end up with a police force that is capable of such blatant misjudgment? I call for a general enquiry in this particular case, and also for a revision of the way they hire police officers.

While I never condone the over the top actions of another officer. Do not let this become a cop bashing thread. Not all cops on the beat act out or are overly aggresive. Please try to remember that.

I'm not sure when it happened, but it has. I, like you, would think twice before involving the police in anything: I simply don't trust them.

Apparently the Attorney General is either going to, or currently is doing an investigation. For what that's worth. I'm not so sure I like our world anymore, at least that's how I'm feeling today. I hope, I really hope that all those that laid hands on her get what they deserve. That the reputed male deputy with a hand held cam, gets what he deserves. I don't imagine that woman will ever be the same again after being 'raped without penetration' by those that are supposed to serve and protect.

The rules are their "fall back protection". They will also claim that she became the criminal when she presented someone elses ID when she was asked for hers. It has been slow to come, and it has been so gradual that no one noticed, but the courts and law makers have slowly been taking away our individual rights. Starting with telling us what safety equipment we HAVE to use in order to legally operate our privately owned vehicles, on roads our tax dollars pay for. This is a case of the officers actually getting this person even more upset, than when they first arrived on scene, and then using that to claim she was a "disturbed person", as well as presenting a "fake" ID, and that is what allowed the strip search in the first place. The "disorderly conduct" charge is from her actions after being assulted and being more upset by the officers. I agree with everyone else, this is bogus, and it goes too far. I would also be willing to bet the parts of the video not released, will be even more damageing to the Sherriff's case, if so, nobody will ever see them, they will be mysteriously recorded over or just dissapear. edited 'cause I can't spell so good

Camille, I recognise with the 'Horror We Call Humanity' thread I started, that I was just venting and I do, frequently, see the good there is in people, too. I have known police officers (still acquaintances with a couple) and they do a thankless job at the best of times. The unfortunate thing that's shoved in our faces, via the media, are the horror stories. While I can see that the woman in the OP did have her basic human rights abused, before condemning those involved I would still like to read a report detailing exactly what occurred from the moment the patrol car turned up and she was spoken to. Here in the UK we have a lot more police on foot patrol due to the negative views of the community in general and the suspicion with which they regarded the police. I can't speak for the UK as a whole, and from what I have seen it seems to be working.
