I've heard it's people getting together and doing bdsm online.  Is that true?

Not even close.
A munch is a real life gettogether, usually at a restaurant or other suitably public venue. There is usually (not always) nothing specifically BDSM about it, aside form the participants and it isnt even necessarily clear who is what there.  Its just a social outting.

"munch" coming from the idea that you usually eat (or drink).

It very much is just a mostly-vanilla occasion.  Very little fetish wear (always street legal).  It is however one of the best ways to meet good people.

It's also generally very safe because it is in a public venue.

However some munches, eating up the fear of being discovered (pun intended), have moved to more private venues. I have mixed feelings about that myself.

Just don't be put off if people seem a little cliquish.  It's not necessarily intentional, just natural.  Find the organizer, introduce yourself as somebody new and generally they will help to introduce you around as a new person.  Without that, sometimes you'll feel pushed out.

Keep positive attitudes and you'll quickly make lifetime friends.

LMAO - don't feel bad, the first time I heard the term was from someone I knew to be a swinger talking about it, and thought it was some kind of oral sex orgy!

To my pleasant suprise, it is a fairly vanilla get together -and I have met some intelligent, articulate open minded people in the community. It is a great way to meet people, learn of private parties, and I highly recommend going.

For christ sakes, don't slobber gravy on your tie, or get toilet paper stuck on your shoe........or poke out any dominants eye with a salad fork.  (subs optional, usually)

Other than that, you are gonna have a good time.

Oh yeah, and wear clean underwear ---'cause my mom said.

Ron,
You sooo funny..You cant help it..it comes naturally..

I enjoyed my first munch..was very nervous but had a nice time and met some great people..(uh, and some strange ones) and went to my first play party after the second munch. Yes, things can be a little clickish at first but that's mainly because people are cautious about who is there...afterall, new people attend the munches and you are on guard a bit.
It is never fetish wear at the munches Ive attended. Only street attire and if there is a play party later it is usually at a private home by invite only.
Munches are a great way to meet people. Its not very formal and you can relax and naturally the right ones will gravitate towards each other.

Drummer, I hope you have a great time.
I had no idea what a munch was until a friend of mine told me.  I have been to a couple in teh past but went to my first one in VA a few weeks ago and it was refreshing just being around people with similar interests.  It was a bit frightening at first but relaxing afterwards.  Some may be cliquish but ....I guess find someone who is closer in age or has similar interest and start talkign tothem and that should help you feel a bit comfortable.  Atleast thats what I did.

I usually describe a munch as a gathering of people who all share one common interest, who get together to share company, NOT to participate in said interest. So, if you went to a chess munch, everyone there would be a chess geek, but there wouldn't be any chess boards sitting about. (My son, who is a major geek, and, among other things, a language geek, challenged this defination by asking, what if it were a gourmands munch? How do you get together in a resteraunt to share your common interest in good food and to eat together, without enjoying the food? Hmmm.)
Munches do generally take place in a resteraunt, and generally you have a meal. Each one is run different, but as has been pointed out here, blantent lifestyle behavoir is frowned on, and clothes should be street safe. (try not to scare any little children that may be in another part of the resteraunt with thier parents.) Since the clothes are street safe and there is no kneeling or geneflecting going on, you do not need to worry about being 'seen' there - anyone who sees you will simply see you are at some kind of meeting. Tell them it's your computer club or church group or something. They won't know the difference.
In my experience, at a munch, about half of the talk is about the common tie - in this case BDSM - and about half is about everything else - news, politics, kids, laundry, for some reason, the health care crisis in America is always a popular topic.
Write the orginazer first, they will generally tell you how to identify the group. Often you will be told to ask the hostess for the 'computer group'. If the group meets there regularly, the waitress knows better, but, hey, gotta keep up apperences, right? <grin>.
As someone said, don't be put off by cliquishness, these are people who have devoloped friendships and may only get to see each other once a month. Go for three months in a row, if you haven't made any connections by then, maybe that particular group is a bit too cliquish, or not a good fit for you.
Just be yourself and have fun. There is no better way to meet real people in your local area.

I've just received an invite to a munch; I'm still in two minds as to whether I should go or not. Strange that for someone as gregarious as me, the thought of meeting strangers on the basis of our shared 'interests' should make me so nervous.

we have a bad habbit at our local group of asking the people who walk into the munch with that i'm-new-and-not-sure-if-i-am-in-the-right-place look on their face if they are there for the bible study group...only one person actually turned around and almost left because they thought they were in the wrong place while i was there....whoops? most people laugh and it breaks the ice...

I would love to attend a munch, but I have transportation issues. I certainly don't want my (extremely vanilla) roommate to take me - she might know about my BDSM leanings, but it's one of those "don't ask, don't tell" situations. If I take Access, I might get there two hours ahead of the meeting, and maybe have to wait as long as two hours afterwards for the return trip.

Would it be OK to find another female sub to pick me up and bring me home again? That should be fairly safe, especially if we get to know one another first.

Any female subs in the eastern part of LA county who go to these things?
