My past made me who I am

Essentially true for me with a few additions.

My past experiences shaped me to be the person I am.
Just as important, my perception of each of those experiences shaped me to be the person I am.
My heritage shaped me to be the person I am.
A few specific individuals notably shaped me to be the person I am.
Genetics played a role, so far as it affected how I perceive the world around me (i.e., excellent hearing, lousy vision, etc.).

All these things influenced who I have become.  But there is one last thing that played perhaps a bigger role than anything in who I have become.

Who I chose to be.

Decisions based on life experiences. All things being equal in the body form, I place zero faith in genetics.

My past made me who I am

my past made me who we were in ways that are unfathomable
my present is who i am
and is often who we were even a few moments ago
recursion
habitual
going back over what was said and done
as if that has control over who i am now
i am whatever i will become
according to whomever and whatever i feel has control over me
which could be my past, or my Master, or the stars
or pain
or fate like matter colliding
or destiny like a path already trodden
along which i am happy to follow footprints
and the spirit of those who have gone before me
in whose wisdom i trust

I used to be a chef always having to prove that I had the biggest balls in a male dominated kitchen. I was so good at it that most of the men were actually intimidated by me and having to put up a dominant front for 12-18 hours a days 6 days a week made me long for a man that wouldn't be afraid to subdue, bind, gag and discipline me. Even though I don't work in a kitchen anymore, I still have remnants of that tough, my-cojones-are-bigger-than-your-cojones attitude and I still long for that wonderful, lovely man to win my heart and conquer me.

edited because I'm tired...

Pain, lots of pain.
A decent memory of what caused pain.
The never ending quest thru the shadows of my mind.
The ability to see the shadows in another's mind.
The desire to heal myself from the pain.
The deeper desire to heal others.
Experience (the label we put on our mistakes)

This all has made me who I am.

When I was 7, I was given a week to live. I'm still trying to figure out why they were so far off in their estimates. I was laid up for a year. I studied (thanks to a teacher who came by the house twice a week). Soon, I was far ahead of my classmate in classes, in reading material and in my thinking.  This separation followed me for the rest of my life. I've always been on a path that was separate from the crowd. As I was growing up on the ranch, I'd ride horse and at lunch, take a break, reading Tolstoy with my horse grazing nearby, smoking a pipe and dreaming of far off lands. I’d listen to the CBC and shortwave radio from around the world. I grew to like all kinds of music that most in my area didn’t appreciate. I hungered to learn about different worlds and different philosophies. I became very independent and developed some strange tastes and preferences.

In high school, I dated ladies in their 20’s. I’ve always been domineering in my relationships. I enjoyed intimate relations since a young age. I loved to “take” a woman, make her mine. I’m not sure if this explains why I am like I am. My family is pretty straight laced. I grew up in a community where everyone knew way to much about everyone (boy, was I the topic of a lot of discussions). A large portion of my family is Pentecostal. In spite of this, I turned out to be me. Damn, I’m not sure that answered the question. …

What makes You who You are.
What defines Yourself, and how long have You
known it?

By a strange set of circumstances, some of which i am not even aware, i have arrived at this place in my life.  Early childhood experiences shaped and molded my personality and i was drawn to certain people who saw the submissiveness and masochism within me.  These men have given me, for the most part, a structured and positive way to explore my sexuality and discover my identity, long before i even had a name for it.  The process of discovery continues and how i define myself is ever-evolving.

first post on the forums here so here it goes ;)

like justme said. my past made me who i am today. at only 5'5'' and always shorter than most it made me a tough, aggressive, dom that had always something to prove in life. it made me who i am today and it transfers over from my personal life into my business life. i'm in sales and and am very aggressive and dominate in my business. i am also the same way in every other aspect of my life. i am definetly an alpha, a leader, a provider, and a protector. i have pushed myself though life to prove i'm the best at what ever i do and it works for me.

not all men are doms. seems most men today are submissive. i always said the last of the real men died when John Wayne died :(

Known what I wanted pretty much since I can remember. One of the many things about fetishes that's always intrigued me is how they clearly demonstrate the sexual nature of children. Before I was aware of the opposite sex as a potential source of gratification, rather than just cooties, I was keenly cognizant of the fact that I wanted to tie up people and fuck with them. Polymorphously perverse indeed.

When i first came out as a lesbian, i knew i had found my "home".  i didn't choose to be a lesbian, it just is who i am.

When i accidently stumbled into the kink world, i knew i had found "home" there, too.  As in finding my queerness, i didn't choose to be kinky, it just is who i am.

As for being a submissive, it's just who i am, for whatever reason.  Nature vs nurture.....who knows?  It just is what it is.  However, i am not submissive all the time; i am only submissive to that person who is my dominant.  When situations outside the world of my relationship with my dominant (when i have one) require me to be assertive and in control, i can be just that.  i hold my own.

I have an Older Brother, very Dominate.
A younger Sister who is the same.

My whole family is Dominate except me.

When a Mistress at a munch, doesn't even know you,
and She tells you to be a good boy and get Her another Drink.
Well then you know who you truly are.

I thought maybe I could be a switch, but some
people are just who they are.

I am me, but what that is with regards all this I have not a clue, sometimes dominant, other times submissive.Could be a switch, but other than that, pretty clueless and ever seeking.

Background, family etc, was pretty neutral, I saw male dominance, but I also saw the very real and effective subtle female dominance, or was it clever manipulation.

I am me … an end result of my life … my genetics … my family and friends … of love and abuse … of pain and pleasure ... of nature and nurture … of experiences both good and bad … of choices I have made and those that were made for me … all these things played a part in who I have become … and none of it matters as long as I can look in the mirror and like who I see (at least most of the time)

What makes you who you are is not so important … it is your acceptance of who you are and your striving to grow and become more that is important … reflection and understanding where we came from and the journey to here is valuable but not if you get so tied up in it that you stop seeing the beauty that surrounds you and miss the opportunity to enjoy life.

I'm a submissive and ADHD i have always tried to please. my sister is a dominate personality but not my parents. i was raised to be independent and resourceful and my 4 children are as well, so far 2 of them show dominate quality's and the other 2 show submissive qualities. part of it is in the genes and supported by the environment.
