\O"din*ism\, n. Worship of Odin; broadly, the Teutonic heathenism. -- O\"din*ist, n.Odinism was valor; Christianism was humility, a nobler kind of valor. --Carlyle.

LOL.. I couldn't help it!

It might be a good idea to erradicate the pesky bits in the Bible which offend contemporary readers [8D]. Time for a cleanup: it won't be the first one. Doesn't mean the older versions have to be burnt - they can be kept in vaults, at the Vatican or wherever they belong.

And precisely who are you to tell me what books on my shelves must be turned in?

I swear, the next great fascist will be a politically correct liberal.

kittinSol -> RE: Rewriting the Bible? (3/1/2008 4:12:49 PM)

Perhaps I'll post a blasphemy thread so we can have fun to our heart's content.

The concept of god's wife explains alot! She bitches at him , he gets cranky. next thing ya know he is willy nilly kicking folks out of the garden and raining fire and brimstone.

Maybe the New Testament is a post-divorce god?

Here we have an example of a "politically correct liberal" (first time anybody calls me that, by the way, I think it's hilarious - should I be flattered, or offended, Rich?) making an attempt at sarcasm, and of an "earnest conservative" lacking the sense of humour and/or self-derision to catch the sarcasm :-) .

Il faut sourire, quand on ne sait pas.

mnottertail -> RE: Rewriting the Bible? (3/1/2008 4:17:19 PM)

Well, as kittininSol so clearly pointed out, she would have had to have a fuck of a gash on her to bring forth the universe....

Say, uh---I don't mean to start no trouble, but your wife is somethin' of a cunt, ain't she, god?

Rev. Randall P, MacMurphy

servers dropping like flies around here today, must have angered the collarme gods with all this blaspheming.

I'm thinking there should be an 'other books by this author' section at the back and a photograph of mosses wearing 70's style spectacles.

They can use my avatar pic.

Ron, are you a "subversive controversist anarchist" with shit-stirring tendencies?

TheHeretic -> RE: Rewriting the Bible? (3/1/2008 4:20:59 PM)

I apologize for any confusion.  I wasn't calling you either a "politically correct liberal" or a nazi.  I was suggesting that you would probably cheer for him when the next one rises.

By all means, start a blasphemy thread.  I might even try to offer something worth pondering.

charmdpetKeira -> RE: Rewriting the Bible? (3/1/2008 4:25:49 PM)

The Bible, by it’s self, is such a riddle. Would a rewrite be exclusive to what the “original scriptures” say, or would it take into account that the “stories” told in the Bible, hold strange, yet unmistakable resemblances to stories told by cultures existing long before Christianity? If so, is it done with a modern perspective, or do the writers attempt to see things from the perspective of the first tellers?

I wouldn’t say I’m against the idea. I am, however, doubtful the message will be less botched then it has been in the past.

IMHO, a translation is not the same as a revision.

outlier -> RE: Rewriting the Bible? (3/1/2008 4:57:13 PM)

In theory you are correct however in practice this man would disagree
with you Lady H, at least as far as the history of the bible is concerned.

And since he is a biblical scholar who can read many of the original languages
I would tend to believe him.

Scholar Bart Ehrman's book explores how scribes -- through both omission and intention -- changed the Bible.
Misquoting Jesus: The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why

is the result of years of reading the texts in their original languages. (emphasis added)

Ehrman says the modern Bible was shaped by mistakes and intentional alterations that were made by early scribes who copied the texts. In the introduction to Misquoting Jesus, Ehrman writes that when he came to understand this process 30 years ago, it shifted his way of thinking about the Bible.

You can google the title or author or you can just start here or here.

To rewrite bible? that is crazy idea. Why dont we rewrite Homer, and Shakespeare is getting old too. why should one want to rewrite piece of art. While we are at it, lets repaint Mona Lisa. Maybe recompose 5th. Everything older then Oscar Wilde has to be redone.

What we truly need to rewrite is constitution that paper is outdated. Electoral votes? sure, amazing idea, when most of your country is illiterate, and unable to know what is happening in DC. In 2007, show people some trust please.
