Serious Answer:  There are organizations who commonly update the language and verbiage of the Bible to make it more readable to younger generations.  I had comic books based on the Bible when I was a kid [my father was a minister at the time].

I too had the comic book bible when I was kid, actually I think it remains in my mother's garage which I call storage ( pk here!)

It was great, but not bloody enough for my liking.

no, i don't think it should be re written.  if someone wants to add their opinion fine...

i also dont' think a Stephan King novel should be re written just because someone doesnt' like it or agree with it.

just because some people don't agree with a text doesn't mean it has to be changed, get over it...move on to something that you do agree with.

It might be a good idea to erradicate the pesky bits in the Bible which offend contemporary readers [8D]. Time for a cleanup: it won't be the first one. Doesn't mean the older versions have to be burnt - they can be kept in vaults, at the Vatican or wherever they belong.

FOFLMAO

Did you read King James mind or what?

If I could go back in time and just pimp slap some one into not doing something.. he would be one of the asshats on the top of the list.

outlier, My post was to rewrite, revise-- it did not have anything to do with translation as The Heretic indicated--the premise is that the translation is complete as it stands and we rewrite or revise it to todays standards---

Then write your own damn new book and try to get it to sell as well.  By what authority could you even contemplate such a thing?

Do you think the Bible should be redefined/revised/rewritten for our times?

Why, Why not?

No, I don't believe the Bible needs to be "rewritten/redefined/or revised."
Why, do I feel that way?

Because there are already 300-500 versions of the Bible already.
I don't think the World needs 1 million versions of the Bible.
How many versions of the Bible have been published? | Answerbag.com

DementedGirl -> RE: Rewriting the Bible? (3/1/2008 6:56:03 PM)

No one could rewrite the bible, it will always be what it is. Now writing your own verison, is another matter. Several people have done it, and I am sure several more will.

I guess for me the word of God is born in my heart and not the pen of a man.

I'm yet to meet a single man that didn't have an agenda as he passes on any kind of information, whether its from God or that Darwin dude.

LadyHathor,

Allow me to try again.  I believe your premise has a fatal flaw.  It speaks of
the translation as complete as it stands as if it were somehow the unedited
"Word of God".   I was attempting to point out that a significant biblical
scholar considers this to be nonsense and has written a book to that effect.

"When world-class biblical scholar Bart Ehrman first began to study the texts of the Bible in their original languages he was startled to discover the multitude of mistakes and intentional alterations that had been made by earlier translators. In Misquoting Jesus, Ehrman tells the story behind the mistakes and changes that ancient scribes made to the New Testament and shows the great impact they had upon the Bible we use today. He frames his account with personal reflections on how his study of the Greek manuscripts made him abandon his once ultraconservative views of the Bible. Since the advent of the printing press and the accurate reproduction of texts, most people have assumed that when they read the New Testament they are reading an exact copy of Jesus's words or Saint Paul's writings. And yet, for almost fifteen hundred years these manuscripts were hand copied by scribes who were deeply influenced by the cultural, theological, and political disputes of their day." (emphasis added)

Now if you want to say that since it has been done before; don't you think
it is time to do it again.  Then you can use this to buttress that argument.
But the position that translations and revisions are wholly seperate entities
is proven nonsense.  There are no known "values free" translations.  That
is what I was pointing out.   And giving a reference to back it up.

Repeat of links in my initial post:  Google books and NPR.

Yeah, that theory is causing problems as well.  Can you imagine the shrieks if we suggested rewriting that one fit our modern tastes?

Well..as it is written..it is pretty much filled with sweetness and light.

Gotta dig pretty deep to find the hatred.
