Okay Rich, I am going to say 10 Hail Mary's after I type this.
Forgive me in advance, LORD.

Maybe the modern version of the Bible, will have a section on alternative lifestyles!
Separate sections for BDSM, submissives and Dominants.

Time to go say the Hail Mary's now.

Yeah, that theory is causing problems as well.  Can you imagine the shrieks if we suggested rewriting that one fit our modern tastes?

personally i am confronted with this text day in and day out. and in my jaded opinion i think it is the biggest work of fiction ever published. but then again it is just me

SophiaCorrupted -> RE: Rewriting the Bible? (3/1/2008 10:42:41 PM)

It shouldn't be rewritten. There are too many different sects that rely on it to decide on how to rewrite it.

On the other hand, I think it's safe to say that it should be ignored...so it's sort of a moot point.

Maybe it has stood the test of time because as much as they have tried to dispute it, they find Evidence that it is for real.

Why, Why not?

The bible is a confection of unrelated writings. Individually some of the writings have historic and literary value. Put together and presented as a holy book full of truths just makes it a load of bullshit and not worth the time and effort to get anything intelligent out of it.

heartcream -> RE: Rewriting the Bible? (3/3/2008 2:31:15 AM)

The Bible is missing quite a bit of information. Mary, the very Mother of Jesus, wrote a book for the Bible, where is it? I would like to read that. I am not sure that God Himself would feel the Bible is really the tell-all, not needing editing or rewriting book that it is held up to be. It was written by a bunch of men, not God Himself. I am not saying there is not hoards of amazing things in there, there certainly is. I would also add that it is flooded with a bunch of superstitious, unevolved, guilt-ridden-point-of-view-taking slants that have basically nothing to do with the word of God.

I do believe that the Bible is not the last word written by the Big Guy. I think God can have another book written any time He would like.

Marc2b -> RE: Rewriting the Bible? (3/3/2008 7:49:17 AM)

God is all powerful.  God created everything.  God created you.  God want’s you to be nice to everybody.  If you’re not nice to everybody God will burn you in agony forever (but God gave you free will, so it’s entirely your choice – no pressure).  But we haven’t been nice to everybody.  This pissed God off so bad that he killed his son.  But his son magically came back to life and asked God to give everyone a second chance.  God agreed but still plans to burn you in agony forever if you don’t believe.  Now here comes the collection plate, please give generously because the Priest needs a new Volvo.

There. I think that sums it up nicely.

Vittually all gods came from the same root, the egyptians.  Just like luther various splits along the way.  Its amazing how the sun god and the god of darkness evolved into what it is today.  yes I said virtually ALL religions.

The moral of the story is that if man did not have a god they would create one.

the new testament was written for our time.

Perhaps most of the New Testament could apply to our time, but I can think of one thing that needs to be changed and that's the part about divorce and remarriage. According to the New Testament, if you divorce someone for any other reason than adultery, neither ex spouse can remarry until one of them dies. If your spouse nonconsentually rapes you, it doesn't matter as long as they don't commit adultery. If your spouse throws you through a window or off a roof, it doesn't matter as long as they don't commit adultery. Why should the victims of such horrible crimes be unjustly punished by having to possibly spend the rest of their lives alone (depending on when the ex spouse dies)? Either the word abuse needs to be added along with adultery in the New Testament or the entire divorce and remarriage issue needs to be removed.

DesFIP -> RE: Rewriting the Bible? (3/3/2008 10:50:30 AM)

It's only about 25 years old. And very readable. I had no trouble adapting to the new translation instead of the 1917 edition I was used to.

I can see it now...  and why do you want to divorce this man?

He is abusive.

How so young lady?

He farts in bed.

Thats the problem with making laws, the unintended uses are more important often times than the uses.

No, but it would be nice to see all the writings, even those removed, restored to their original intent. I don't believe that will happen.

mhawk -> RE: Rewriting the Bible? (3/3/2008 10:57:26 AM)

uuummm, eerrrmmm, well...................it would be interesting to see and i certainly like anyone else have theories of my own with all of the biblical stuff but, wouldn't look forward to being burnt as a witch................enough said

kittinSol -> RE: Rewriting the Bible? (3/3/2008 11:00:08 AM)

The thing is, anybody can take the texts and put them back in their original context. I don't understand why there's such a hue and cry from Bible lovers at the suggestion someone rewrites "the Bible" - nobody will take their book away from them: it just means a new one will come out.

What's wrong with that? Am I missin' sumfin'?

trusting -> RE: Rewriting the Bible? (3/3/2008 11:03:37 AM)

actually, the Bible has been rewritten for our day and time... the Scriptures we read today are not in the same language as they were origionally written. there are revised versions of the Bible that help people better understand while they read...

i believe (through European history), that the Bible has not been changed to include/exclude anything. Christianity has stayed strong for many decades and it will stay strong until the end of time...

one thing is for sure... no matter ones faith, we all believe in some sort of God!

LaTigresse -> RE: Rewriting the Bible? (3/3/2008 11:08:31 AM)

Kittin, I think we are missing something. I seem to miss that same something quite frequently and I've come to the conclusion that I don't particularly mind.
