What I think is senseless is that we spend billions on pets, but we still have homeless PEOPLE.  That we won't even take care of our own species first is amazing to me.  It should be a felony to feed an animal that is a pet before all the humans on the planet have enough to eat.

I agree that the situation of homeless people is unacetpable, but disagree that not feeding pets is going to fix the problem.

Thier need will not be taken care of by throwing food at them.

My personal oppinion is that the problem starts with public schools being geared toward "memorizing for the test", instead of actual learning; so that only a select few get any substantial worth out of their time there, and anyone who has difficulty memorizing is SOL.

Don't be rude. I was just saying he was a jerk in general for throwing it just to be on camera. Altho, now I wonder why the guy on the radio didn't do a lil more research.

THIS is a better picture in my opinion anyways.

As far as homeless people go, some friends of mine are very involved with a homeless shelter in downtown Atlanta. Apparently addiction, and mental instability is more of a problem then the lack of food. I think getting mental help to those who need it would be more effective than just soup kitchens

I wasn't rude, I was asking a question.

That pic reminds me of a few I took while I was in afghanistan. I found 2 kittens playing hide and seek around the base of a tent and couldn't resist. One of my favorites shows one in a pipe while the other, having just discovered his brother, moves in for the attack.

just wondering why there are people posting to this thread that think that just because many of us are outraged by this video that we are hardhearted towards the plight of humans who are homeless/in a battle zone/ etc.

As I said before, just because we are outraged by the treatment of the puppy DOES NOT mean we are any less horrified and outraged by the treatment of non-combatants regardless of WHICH "side" is comitting the atrocities.

I suggest you try to title your threads better then. You seem to use the excuse much of the mainstream media does when placing something before the public.

That`s a little silly and disingenuous.

Many folks will c/p a title.Doesn`t mean anything.

The "media is biased,is liberal, is this or that" is part of your bias.So is blaming the messanger.

There have also been stories about GIs being very kind to dogs and cats with units adopting them.

There was one story of a dog crossing 20 miles desert before being found and taken in.

All the good stories in the world aren`t going to balance out things like this.

All the good news about schools painted and roads built in Iraq,will never balance out the tragedies there.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Not to hijack,but the neo-con cheerleaders,Bush/Gen.Petraeus and the other war mongers will soon ask congress and the American people for 'another' fuck`n six months to make the so called "surge" work.
The neo-cons never had any plans to leave Iraq.They were going to make us stay there from day one.Indefinately staying there was always their plan.
That's why Obama has this election in the bag. All he has to do is quote McCain's statement about 100 years in iraq and it'll be Obama by a landslide. Now if Hillary gets the nod..........hello 100 years in iraq, President McCain.
I don't get in to town much, but there's almost always someone at the 10th St. exit for I-75 south. And I always have some change in the car, so I always give some.
Lots of these folks are Vets, a few are kids and women who've been abused, and they really do deserve more than we as a society have been willing to provide.
Exactly. That is a logical fallacy called "false choice". Simply because people express outrage at this asshole in the vid (which, frankly, I haven't watched because it is too difficult for me to watch such things) does not mean they are not equally outraged at the needless carnage in Iraq. They are simply sticking to the topic.
I grew up around Little Five, and have panhandled when I was a teenager. If you want to help, give them a sandwich, not money. Hell do what I have done before, on the freezing nights, buy some cheap blankets at the Salvation Army store and hand them out. At least then you know your money is actually going for something to keep them alive, rather than booze or crack.
Done that.  And have been told (in no uncertain terms) that Salvation Army/Goodwill etc have given them blankets/tents/etc,,,, what the people NEEDED was food/ personal hygiene products/ etc.  The stuff that the general public doesnt usually provide,
Just sayin'...LOL
ETA:  I lived in L5P in the early 90s. 90% of the people THERE were snotnose brats, then. Panhandling during the day, but perfectly able to pay the cover to get into the Masquerade almost every night ( I worked at the Masq... so I saw these same assholes almost every night).  Dunno what all that has to do with the OP, but since y'all brought it up, just figured I'd put in my .02 on the ATL/L5P thing...  Yes, I know that 5P aint the same.. but it wasnt missin by much, based on what I saw..........(I also worked at the Omni.,.)
Way back in the late 70s I used to hang out at the L5P Pub. Met some neat folks there. Got picked up by a lezbeen. We hung around for several months. She used to come out to my apartment in Clarkston and we'd have a weekend of debauchery smokin' weed and sippin' wine and snortin' poppers and  gettin' out ya-yas. Fond memories of her.
SO, anyway, C&P from an e-mail I sent to a loved one recently:
" I remember a rainy Tuesday night, no business,
sitting out on my bench, when a VW comes roaring down Highland Ave and clips a
dog a woman was walking. I tell my dishwwasher to get some table clothes and
napkins, and I ran over to the parking lot and got my car. I pulled up next to
the dog and his (IIRC) owner just when larry was coming out with the stuff. I
put most of the tablecloths on the back seat, wrapped my hands really well with
the napkins, and picked the dog up and put it in my back seat. The napkins
protected me when the dog bit me because of the pain. I rushed the dog and it's
owner over to an all-night emergency vet on Ponce-de-Leon, but, sadly, the dog
was too messed up, and had to be put asleep. God, that tore me up. I'm trying to
OK, got it. Rose was the woman's name. (only Rose I've ever met. Have met a
Rosalinda, and a Rosalind, but not a Rose) Was trying to remember. That broke my
heart."
I just hate seeing critters in pain.
It's 06.20 here presently and I've only just been able to get back to check this thread. He's sitting next to me by the side of the keyboard and he's received his under the chin/side of the head scritches from his Aunty Greedy lol
I understand what you're saying, Greedy re. the pup/circumstances and that's just it, we don't really know what happened. We see a grinning idiot tossing a little pup off a cliff face - for it to be a cliff means the drop has to be steep and it's very unlikely something that small would survive such a fall, but these are all assumptions. I'm just trying to think logically about the effect of the fall itself, not the actions of the prick that did it in the first place, as they speak for themselves, and hopefully the military will act swiftly in dealing with the miscreant. If it were a larger dog then the chances of it surviving increase, but again that depends on the drop and the reports indicate this was a cliff. Even if the pup hit rocks below, that would only increase its chances of mortality. It's likely its end was quicker than it would have been had the soldier wanted to have a little fun with it using his knife. It's a shame the pup had to die at all, I still think it received the best option insofar as 'methods' but then, I look at just how many people pay into Spain's tourism knowing that every single day bulls are pushed into a ring for spectactors' enjoyment, as a metal helmet is fastened onto its horns and set alight, the heat slowly burning through the horns and driving the animal demented with pain as it thrashes around. Yet people know it goes on, they continue supporting Spain and its barbaric mistreatment of its animals all in the name of 'good sport' and 'festivals'. I'm just saying there are many wrongs in our societies, Greedy, what happened to the pup was abhorrent, but in the grand scheme of things, it had a quicker end than many other creatures.
awww, Miss M.. you rpoor furbaby..give him scritches for me!
As far as the cliff thing though.. since (AFAIK) there are no videos showing the actual drop from the cliff, we have no way of knowing if the pup hit the bottom at a great height and died.. if it hit the bottom and wandered off (slightly dazed, but ok), or if it hit the bottom, and was critically wounded and left to die in a most painful and heinous manner...
a knife to the throat, or a snapped neck would have assured it of a quick death.  NOT that I condone doing that to any living creature, but it certainly would have been more humane than tossing it off a cliff and walking away without knowing what the end result was.  Just my .05.
You're right, the most practical form of help is via the provision of food/personal items. There's a guy close to where I live and is a familiar face among the community, I'm not sure why he remains homeless and it's a pitiful sight to see him begging with his dog in all weathers - thankfully he's under a little shelter in a shop doorway, but still, must be wretched when it does get cold. Despite his circumstances, I refuse to give him money, I'll go in and buy his dog food, give him sandwiches/drink etc.. but I know that should I give him any money at all it would not go on food items for himself or his dog. How do I know this? I've seen him many times take money from well-meaning people and then go into a local store to buy alcohol with it. At least when I buy pet food and put it directly into the bowl for the dog (which is meant for his money to go in from passersby), that dog is getting that food and the man has the option then of eating the sandwiches I buy him, or not.
I can see why you would make the choice you did, if you believe that was what was meant by the idea.
Perhaps you can understand why I would feel that I have witnessed enough beings "falling" from high places; and then some. The realization of which only makes this video all the more ironic.
