I'm pretty sure they use it for the same reason people use words like "Slut", "whore" and "slave" in their profile. They think it's demeaning to themselves. Like a tame way of calling themselves a faggot, or something similiar. Implying that while they might not be a homosexual, they have the "homosexual" qualities that a boi (by definition.) would have...passiveness, being a bottom, etc. It makes sense to me...

I like it when you say, "slut" and "whore"....You look all innocent and shit...Like Li'l White Riding Hood. So sweet and yet so dirty...Like boijen...or kind of like a pecan pie that has been dropped in the mud....I mean you're looking at it, and thinking to yourself...Shit, that pie looks so good..But it is just so dirty! Should I attempt to eat it? Or maybe I should buy it a couple of drinks and then fuck the shit out of it.

I bet this was what everyone was thinking after reading your post.

I won't speak for boijen ...

I know people who identify many different ways and prefer certain pronouns.. sometimes he sometimes she.. for the most part, I'm comfortable with both.. my boi prefers female pronouns although I know she doesn't project feminine in any way at all.

We lesbians are a confusing lot with our gender stuff and like many things, its always good to ask -- despite my constant and consistent exposure to all kinds of gender queers, I often still ask.  And then, someone changes how they like to be refered to, so you can't win.  *grin*

I was at SELF one year, went to the dungeon dressed in fatigues and a black tank top.. jump boots, not the most unusual outfit for me, but a bit different.. I still scream femme -- had a very confused man look at me and say.. "sir, er... ma'am... er... " then he just sighed.. I kissed him.. which was even more confusing I'm sure.  LOL

Life should be fun.

Exactly why I was having trouble chosing a pronoun when referring to boijen.  I've learned that it is always best to ask, since it does offend some, for example, to be called "she" rather than "he" in some situations.  Some bois prefer one over the other and some couldn't care less.  Always good to ask first.

Boijen doesn't care what pronoun is used. SHe/it could care less and considers gender fairly fluid in regards to she/he/itself

Thank you for letting Me know.  I'll keep it in mind for future reference.

Wow, so Wikipedia is *the* source for subculture-specific definitions?  "Boi" is a fairly common term in the goth community, predominantly used by girls, but also reflexively by "bois", to refer to male goths who tend to have/demonstrate a feminine side, however manifested, or as a term of endearment to be differentiated from "boy" which tends to connote immaturity.  For instance, the word "fag" hardly has a universal meaning -- it means one thing in the gay community and another thing in the British cancer stick community.  In fact, this is the first time I've heard that "boi" has a different meaning in the gay community.  BTW, the French word is pronounced, roughly, "bwah", as in the "Bwah zsahk", ("Bois Jacque"), the woods the 101st Airborne defended in the Battle of the Bulge during WWII.

i guess i just got too used to the word "boi" meaning a butch-type lesbian from hanging out with my friends.  i have very few straight friends of either sex, so i just never really paid much attention to the word being used otherwise as of late.  i was contacted by someone who used "boi" as part of the nick and at first glance i thought the person was female, turns out it wasn't.  guess i need to pay a little more attention to popular trends in language usage.

This makes Me a bit curious.  I seriously do not want to hijack this thread, as I think it is a rather good one, but as you cited by example, are these not two different areas?  Is the goth community not a different one from BDSM?  Though I fully agree that some are members of both, I don't see them as one and the same.  I think the term being referenced was in the context of the BDSM community, and the correct definition applies.

Thanks for posting about this.  It has annoyed me so much that I made a journal entry about it on the other side.  That and the abuse of the word "dominate" makes my eyes cross!

My son is gay so I DO associate the "boi" spelling with gay men and the spelling of girl as"gurl" with gay women.

I am SO passe and clueless.

lol it's funny i just had almost the same converstion yesterday (though it was more that i thought it was interesting that itkinda means the opposite for males and females).

I havent met any str8 males who use boi, though the str8 males i talk to are pretty much exclusively doms. as a male boi, i usually find people knowing what it means or having an idea. I have had a few female bois yell at me and before i went online i had no idea it applied to females as well lol

No no no no no. If you are a female then you are a she - period.

If we're gonna chastise the guy in your OP for using the term boi incorrectly (or at least in a manner that doesn't suit you) and we want him to identify himself accurately then you hafta play by the same rules.

I am sorry, but I just have to step in and say, ITS JUST A FUCKING WORD. No matter what, someone is gonna come along and use it in a way you dont like, so just get over it already.  I can guarantee you that somewhere in the world, some girl is sending text messages to her friends talking about the cute "boi" she saw.  Somewhere, theres a band calling themselves Boi -----, or there has been in the past (as stated before).  You cant police the world for using the word "boi" any more than I can police other races for walking up to each other going "Whaddup my nigga!?" (not that I'd want to, cuz of course, its merely a word to me and I have OTHER things to worry about.)

For the last two comments.

Yes, it is just a word.  Still, it's the same to Me as any other term.  Know what a word means before using it in ignorance.

For petpete...... My goodness!  Such language.  I didn't know you had it in you.

If you look up *shit* in the dictionary, it has a lot of meanings, too.  Still, most people know the most common one.

So, ok.  I went to look up the definition of shit.  Seems to me that a LOT of people have been using it in the various ways that it is listed on the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary.  Care to share with me another way we oh so silly people have been misusing it?

I don't understand. On the net all you have is words...so if you're really trying to get a point across...like making yourself appealing to someone...one would think that you would do anything you could to be clear. That would include looking up the meaning of a word to make sure you're using the right one right?

So what is it with straight guys on BDSM sites in paricular using the word boi to describe themselves? I really just don't understand what they think when they use it. "Oh! I'm gonna stand out!"...by using an inappropriate word to describe yourself you only look like an idiot.

So here's a bit of info...

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boi_%28gender%29

Boi
is a term used within the lesbian community to denote a submissive butch in the BDSM community and a young butch in the butch-femme community. It is also used as a term of endearment for butches by femmes.

It may also be used in the gay community to refer to a young-appearing (or relatively young) bisexual or gay male, especially one who has effeminate characteristics. The term can also be used by anyone who wishes to distinguish from heterosexual or heteronormative identities. The term is also commonly used by those who are female to male transgendered.[1]

It may also refer to a female-born or female-bodied person—sometimes transsexual, transgendered, or intersexed, sometimes not—that generally does not identify as, or only partially identifies as feminine, female, a girl, or a woman. Some "bois" identify as one or more of these, but they almost always identify as lesbians, dykes, or queers. Many are also genderqueer or practice genderfuck. Bois may prefer a range of pronouns, including "he", "she", or gender-neutral pronouns such as "hir", "sie", "zie", and "ey".[2]

The term has found increasing usage in the larger LGBT and mainstream cultures.

I personally think these made-up words are retarded. I think boys should be boys and girls should be girls, regardless of which way you swing or how 'butch' you claim to be.

I will never misspell a word to denote whether someone is a girl or a boy or a purple alien.  It seems silly to me.

Such a great point. It's really about people trying to be something they're not. If you're a girl who likes girls, great, be that. Don't tell people you're a boy if you haven't got, or are not planning to have a cock. Same thing the other way, if you're a guy who likes guys, peachy. But don't tell people you're a girl unless you have or are planning to have a vagina.

Sheeesh and I thought the rap community had the corner market on made-up words.

Fo' shizzle!
