There was a program in the UK recently, Balderdash and Piffle, about the etemology of words, they often go back a hell of a lot further than we realise in many meanings, even if the OED doesnt recognise it as proof they were shocked how many things they DID have to change because of how long they have actually been around

It's still competed for. I need to look it up but I could be wrong...I thought the ABW in DC had the title for a while...or it's still around. The s-type female competitor can use the gender word of he/she/it's choice.

from AmericanBrotherhood.com for the ABW contest:

The Leatherboy and Leathergirl contests are open to both male and female entrants. We feel that being a "boy" or "girl" is a state of mind, not a specific gender.

I'll report I've been a leather dyke for a lot longer than 2004.. and suggest that the word boi was used as boijen has stated at least since 1995

Awesome!  So even if we take your verbal reference (which I will) of 1995 for the lesbian usage, and references back to 2000 for goth/emo usages (and remember, neither of our numbers are concrete, they're just the earliest we've found citations for) then the 'word' boi has still had MULTIPLE MEANINGS for the majority of its lifespan.  It's done, the fight is over, sorry but the 'word' already has multiple meanings.

We can turn the fight for boi into Israel/Palestine if we really want to, it'll just be another never ending battle.

boy 1154, boie "servant, commoner, knave, boy," possibly from O.Fr. embuie "one fettered," from V.L. *imboiare, from L. boia "leg iron, yoke, leather collar," from Gk. boeiai dorai "ox hides." But it also appears to be identical with E.Fris. boi "young gentleman," and perhaps with Du. boef "knave," from M.Du. boeve, perhaps from M.L.G. buobe. Used slightingly of young men in M.E. Meaning "male negro slave or Asian personal servant of any age" attested from 1609. Boyfriend is attested from 1909. Amer.Eng. expression oh, boy attested from 1917.
Interesting that the word BOY itself originated from the word BOIE

It came up again, so I'm asking again.

Considering this is a BDSM site, not a goth site, wouldn't boijen's use of the term, and many other people's definition of the term, be correct?

I think I am probably looking at it much as different locations have different uses of terms.  The fact that it has two different meanings doesn't necessarily make both correct.  I tried to make that point a bit earlier, but I don't think everyone especially caught on.  The slang use of a word, while a definition, isn't especialy correct.

Damn fine thread.

I think you are right, I think that contextually we can assume the meaning of the word, but as there may well be goths on this site that use the term their way then we cant always assume, and I didnt get the feeling she was only talking about it being used in a D/s way, though i might be wrong

yes.. at ABW (I have very close connections to ABW).. it is leatherboy however.. with a y... but you do not have to be male.. there are several titles out there like that..

I was trying to think back to the early '90s when there was a leather boi contest.. I just don't remember when/where that was..

many of the leather boy titles are open to men and women...

So here's a bit of info...

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boi_%28gender%29

Boi
is a term used within the lesbian community to denote a submissive butch in the BDSM community and a young butch in the butch-femme community. It is also used as a term of endearment for butches by femmes.

It may also be used in the gay community to refer to a young-appearing (or relatively young) bisexual or gay male, especially one who has effeminate characteristics. The term can also be used by anyone who wishes to distinguish from heterosexual or heteronormative identities. The term is also commonly used by those who are female to male transgendered.[1]

It may also refer to a female-born or female-bodied person—sometimes transsexual, transgendered, or intersexed, sometimes not—that generally does not identify as, or only partially identifies as feminine, female, a girl, or a woman. Some "bois" identify as one or more of these, but they almost always identify as lesbians, dykes, or queers. Many are also genderqueer or practice genderfuck. Bois may prefer a range of pronouns, including "he", "she", or gender-neutral pronouns such as "hir", "sie", "zie", and "ey".[2]

The term has found increasing usage in the larger LGBT and mainstream cultures.

Now there is a source " I trust"  A bunch of self appointed geeks who know EveryFuckingThing.  As i read it the def of the term boi from the "source"  It covers everything except one legged dogs whose name doesn't start with b.  I wish I could be a FuckingKnowItAll!  I just don't have time

whatever.. I just gave you what my experience is.. since my involvement in the leather community predates my internet stuff.. I gave you the benefit of my experience.. 1995 is the first time I remember people actually competing for that title.. that said, it was used before then.. do we as lesbians get credit for the origin of the word?  I have no clue.. in my experience.. yeah, we do..

again, I'm given to the very useful... whatever

If words carry no meaning then we're fucked. The point is using boi as an example really. People use words and sometimes have no clue what that word means. Clarity in communication is broken down and sometimes misleading then.

And we are on CM...not some skater chat...so there is context here already.

I said it earlier Ms. Pact and thank you.

Geez...am I like the only Leather Lifestyler who's feelings weren't hurt by the death of what's his face from D&D? So what if they're goth...being goth has nothing to do with BDSM. This is a BDSM site...that's the context.

I recall in the late 1980's the term boy being used in Toronto in the community.

Hear hear!

Actually the first time I saw the word boi was in 1994 when the Hip Hop Duo Outkast debut (one of the member's nickname is "Big Boi" who as far as I know is a het male).  In 1995 I met a soft butch named jennie and when we exchanged e-mails she (which was her preference) signed it boi/jennie.  She said she wanted to be titled that because it gave her butch head space as well as her head space as a bio woman.  I was fine with that and fine with others who identify as such in the community and out of the community.

Some tops don't like to be called a Motherfucker when they are in action but I love it.  We embrace names the way WE see fit. I don't care what the dictionary says. I mean let's not get me started about "fat" and "the n word too"(!)

8 fucking pages of the etymology of boi.

Goddammit! It is no wonder that a pretty fucking het man can't get his cock sucked around this motherfucker.

Nice, real nice.
(which by the way meant 'stupid' at its inception, and is coming around to that again)
