Completely off topic but did you know a Rock Lobster is a $20 note in Australia?

Truth.

Respectfully I ask this question to see if it is a trend.  I have been running into "Masters" who appear to have little or poor training.  I know just because a Man calls himself a Master doesn't make them one.  I have been meeting a much lower quality of "Masters" than usual.  Is this a trend or have I just been lucky?  From my point of view it is harder and harder to find a good Master, or Mistress, in public settings their behavior, and that of their subs, have a lack of basic social skills is appalling.  I see Masters that I know just wince at some of the actions.  I know no Master can be the police of manners but has anyone one else noticed this?
s seem

I have no training (which would be a  rung below little or poor training, I suppose) and I am curious about a few things. What differentiates a master of poor quality and a master of superb quality? Where does one go for this training? I've checked my university's class catalog and I'm coming up with nothing.

The Old Guard -- who never called themselves that -- were homosexual leathermen who were WWII vets.  I'm straight, my sub is a vegetarian, and even vanilla leather culture has nothing to do with either of us.  If it helps you, my congratulations.  I respect people based on whether they build up others, not on the dogma they slavishly follow.

this is the first time I've heard what the Old Guard was. I always thought of them as some mythical organization of superhumans (perhaps a lost branch of the knights templar) who birthed bdsm through some creation story that only the learned men and women of the lifestyle know.

Myths are cool.  Facts, though, are even cooler.  Here's a good place to start.

Someone's master is just someone's master because that master has a person in his life that sees him as such, and relates to him as such, and refers to him as such. They're not actually a master to everyone else in the world.  There aren't any "Real Masters".

Exactly!  That's what I was meaning by my post.  He's "my" Master because that's how He wanted it and how I relate to Him.  Doesn't mean He's some formally trained, world-renowned "Master" by any one else's standards.  But who cares about their standards?  We sure don't[;)].  Great summation of the whole issue, marietoo................luci

OmegaG -> RE: The Quality of a Master (3/11/2008 7:03:14 AM)

Can someone please send me the memo that states that we are to never have fun, that we are to remain serious at all times, negate enjoying life and live with a set of rules that may or may not fit us as individuals-- I seemed to have never gotten that memo

WIITWD is all about relationships at the core.  And relationships are individual to the people involved.  The last I knew one size never fits all.

LilMissHaven -> RE: The Quality of a Master (3/11/2008 7:15:38 AM)

I don't think its so much the amount of formal training that attracts me to a man or inspire's my submission but more his willingness to learn where I have been in my life, where I am today and where I hope to go in the future and his willingness to share his life stories and hopes with me.  Being deaf I know perfection doesn't exist, so I've never really looked for Mr. Right but maybe more Mr. Right for me.

But, then for me D/s is 99% mental and 1% physical.  I can and am living without sex but am finding it increasingly difficult to live without that feeling of belonging.

And I could be way off base to the original question, if I am I apologize.

I'm sorry I have a very hard time with slang but I've seen OP mentioned several times, what does it mean?

Sorry to hijack.

Either "Original Post" -- that started the thread, or "Original Poster" -- the person who started the thread.  The meaning is usually clear from context.

FR

In his garbage-filled message to me, he said he was leaving this usless [sic] site, that he had not been banned, but would be after this if he didn't close his account. I'm guesssing that means he cannot control his impulses and would have kept saying the really naughty words??

mnottertail -> RE: The Quality of a Master (3/11/2008 8:47:56 AM)

A soliloquy to the thread (and any pussy I can snag)

The quality of Master is not strained.
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest:
It blesseth her that gives and him that takes.
Tis mightiest in the mightiest; it becomes
The throned monarch better than his crown.
His scepter shows the force of temporal power,
The attribute to awe and majesty,
Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings.
But mercy is above this sceptered sway;
It is enthroned in the hearts of kings;
It is an attribute of God himself;
And earthly power doth then show like God's
When mercy seasons justice.
