Obama has not called Clinton or Ferraro racist, neither has his camp. The media have addressed the issues Ferraro, as an experienced politician, who reached her position as a result of positive discrimination, has raised. And raised knowing what would result. Obama has steadfastly tried to keep race and gender out of it - your views are your own. Positive discrimination is illegal in my country, yet still whites who fail to make the grade here claim that blacks are unfairly advantaged. I call that self-pity. The natural advantage of belonging to the majority hasn't worked for them, so it must be someone else's fault. It would take a monumental effort of self-delusion to believe that black people in America and across teh western world do not face discrimination in the workplace and education. If your parents are graduates, you are more likely to become one, giving middle-class white people a big advantage. Schemes to level that balance seem reasonable to my mind, for all poorer families. (Weren't there pickets to prevent black students at Old Miss?) If Obama was benefitting from some unspoken generosity because of his race, why haven't you had a string of black presidents? Blushes, the debate about race and disadvantage has been taking place for decades but it seems some of us have simply not paid attention.
