Hashimotos is when your own body's antibodies attack your thyroid.  They think it's the main cause of hypothyroidism in developed countries.  Women get it more often than men.  There are other factors that could cause hypothryroidism though.  But treatment is the same.

I was always a chubby kid...not like huge (though I thought I was) at 11 years old or so, I was 5'1 and 160 lbs...so I started eating less (I had already cut out both breakfast and lunch on school days...did that in 2nd grade...but I would pig out when I got home from school LOL) so around 11 I started to cut back and only eat dinner...generally around 300 calories a day. I got down to around 130 lbs...maintained that pretty much until I was about 18...then I started gaining...fast...

Thus what one fears becomes reality. If one is afraid of drowning, best not get on a boat for it will most certainly sink. That is how spirituality / the Divine functions. People that are afraid of dogs get bitten.

My mother was afraid of osteoporosis (was at no risk at all), started to take daily calcium supplements, as a consequence got a heart condition and next a whole lot of other medical problems, including a thyroid that functioned at a very high level - and eventually started to loose bone mass: the osteoporosis she had tried to avoid in the first place. What she feared and tried to prevent became reality because of her actions. If she had not taken those calcium supplements in the first place she would have gotten none of those medical problems.

To get yourself on the spiritually correct track, do not wish to be not fat, but wish to be slender and healthy.

Next question: I immediately noticed that you do not eat any meat. Why? Are you poor? Or one of them unnatural vegetarians? Eat some meat, small quantities at first.

I don't know if I have that...my doctor didn't really do many tests...just the basic thyroid function tests...and I don't see a specialist or anything. Just my gp.

That is something that you ought most definitely consult your physician about, for that is not normal and most certainly a symptom of something that ought to be investigated.

Gotcha...I see an endocrinologist.  He does really indepth testing.  But they say that is the main cause of it.

My eating disorders doctor and nutritionist said its normal for people with bulimia. I'm supposed to take digestive enzymes every time I eat, but I can't afford it.

Well...you are not a doctor.

Nope, but I do am a supergenius and I did investigate diseases of the thyroid, including Hashimoto's and I do know more about that than anybody else (at least when I read the chapters that I wrote about those chronic diseases again).

Synthroid is a hormone replacement that your body needs.  If you don't produce it or enough of it, you are not going to stimulate or shock your body into producing it.  Untreated hypothyroidism would eventually be the end of someone, so thank goodness there is a synthetic hormone replacement available.

You are still thinking from your own Hashimoto's perspective, but she does not have Hashimoto's. Stop projecting your medical issues on her.

She got her thyroid recalibrated to a low level of activity as a consequence of her bulimia and starvation diet. So in principle there is nothing wrong with her thyroid. Its level of activity simply needs to be reset. I have indicated several ways in which that hypothetically may be achieved and have told her to consult with her physician before she tries any of them. Hormone supplements are indicated for people with Hashimoto's but in my opinion they are contraindicated for someone with a thyroid like hers.

You don't know that...my doctor has never told me why my thyroid slowed down...it may have been slow all my life...I was always slightly over weight but didn't really eat much. It is just my guess that that was the cause...but I am not a medical professional.

So...you would rather I just keep gaining weight? Before they increased my thyroid pill, I had my metabolic rate tested and I was only burning 500 calories a day...instead of the 2100 I should have been burning.

LOL..that was entertaining.  Obviously she is getting help for it and we are just discussing things.  Anyone can be who they want to be online without having to ante up.  I could say I wear a red cape, write novels about hypothyroidism, and am the guru/walking dictionary on any medical condition if I wanted to.  But I don't.  I don't have time to research everything online every day and post.  Well wait a minute, I am posting multiple replies today...so I guess I do.

Again supplements. *sigh*

Do you still practice bulimia? If so: why? Do not treat symptoms (unless immediate death is impending), but always try to discern the cause, the root of the problem.

Apparently the bulimia seriously messed with the way your stomach functions. You have been derailed biochemically. The way to address this is not to treat the symptoms, but to get your biochemistry back on track.

I did a very quick and superficial google on bulimia and hypothyroidism about half an hour ago and hit paydirt immediately, confirming what I already suspected. So I do know.

I do not purge that often anymore...few times a month..thats all...compared to 10 times a day, at my worst. I don't abuse laxatives anymore...or take diuretics...

Texancutie sounds as if she is VERY well informed about her condition. I have had the experience that a well educated patient can leave the average layman in the dust, knowledge wise.

It is not that simple, Rule. Why...knock it off...stop puking...and all the other things one might say to an eating disorders patient are just words.
Therapy...and sometimes a lifetime of therapy, are needed.
