What is the problem exactly? Weight or a chronic disease or both? Succinctly, please.

dollparts85 -> RE: I have been asked to post a weeks worth of what I eat... (3/19/2008 4:59:37 AM)

I'm a cow. hehe 285 lbs O.O and I have hypothyroidism.

Rule -> RE: I have been asked to post a weeks worth of what I eat... (3/19/2008 5:09:07 AM)

So the causative problem is hypothyroidism. What's the cause of the hypothyroidism? Do you have any chronic or recurrent other diseases?

It has been some years since I read some biochemistry texts on the thyroid, so I have already forgotten most of that. At a wild guess I would suppose that your thyroid gland has been set at a too low level and that level needs to be reset. One hypothetical method to do that may be to every morning take an ice cold bath, or to go to a local butcher or vegetable shop and ask to be allowed to shiver for twenty minutes of half an hour in their cold room. Do make sure that you do not freeze to death. Also I would recommend to talk to your physician before you try such a procedure.

My guess would be that my bulimia is the cause of my hypothyroidism. I restricted pretty much non stop for a good 7 years (binging and purging on average once a week) before my thyroid messed up...and I gained 170 lbs in two years...without really over eating.

Luciferica -> RE: I have been asked to post a weeks worth of what I eat... (3/19/2008 5:16:31 AM)

That dosen't make you a cow, you just have a legit problem..Don't be so hard on yourself, that prolly what brought on the bulima in the first place

texancutie2 -> RE: I have been asked to post a weeks worth of what I eat... (3/19/2008 5:18:38 AM)

Shivering won't help hypothyroidism.  Synthroid is the synthetic hormone that helps replace your thyroid's lack of normal hormone production.  Just have to take a little pill daily to regulate your metabolism.

Yeah...I take levothyroxine...it seems to be working now...a little bit...not perfect...but I am slowly losing weight again recently.

texancutie2 -> RE: I have been asked to post a weeks worth of what I eat... (3/19/2008 5:23:39 AM)

I take it too.  [;)]

I was always a chubby kid...not like huge (though I thought I was) at 11 years old or so, I was 5'1 and 160 lbs...so I started eating less (I had already cut out both breakfast and lunch on school days...did that in 2nd grade...but I would pig out when I got home from school LOL) so around 11 I started to cut back and only eat dinner...generally around 300 calories a day. I got down to around 130 lbs...maintained that pretty much until I was about 18...then I started gaining...fast...

How many mcg do you take? I'm on a really small dose, 50 mcg. But it's amazing how just the thyroid being slightly slow can really mess up your metabolic rate.

MissIsis -> RE: I have been asked to post a weeks worth of what I eat... (3/19/2008 5:37:07 AM)

You are not eating enough.  You are starving your body so much that it thinks it needs to hold onto the fat.  I don't know if you have access to it.  Maybe you could find some information, but Curves has a great food  & exercise plan that will help boost your metabolism back up.   You need much more of the right kinds of foods.  And if all you can manage is a short walk every day, even for 10 or 15 minutes, you can always add more time as you start to feel better.  Leslie Sansone is one of my favorite at home walking exercise coaches.  She has some one mile walking exercises you can do right in front of your TV for under 20 dollars.  When I first started using her workout, I would say ouch all through the kick backs, but it was only a matter of a couple weeks before I could do them easily.

Have you shared your food plan with your doctor?  Or a nutritionist?  You have some great food choices on there, but it really isn't enough.

texancutie2 -> RE: I have been asked to post a weeks worth of what I eat... (3/19/2008 5:37:30 AM)

Am on 100 mcgs daily.  I didn't realize I was so ill before I was diagnosed.  I wondered why my muscles hurt so much, why I was tired, and why I was so forgetful.  The reason my doctor found it and correctly diagnosed it was because I lost twins, and my doctor was trying to figure out what was wrong.  Hashimoto's syndrome affects almost everything because your thyroid regulates so much of your body's functions.  Too bad we didn't find it earlier.

dollparts85 -> RE: I have been asked to post a weeks worth of what I eat... (3/19/2008 5:42:41 AM)

my muscles still hurt really bad...I have constant pain...and like my skin...specially my legs...hurt just to touch them...I need to go back to my doctor and see if my dosage is correct.

Shivering won't help hypothyroidism.

I recall an experiment in which arctic or antarctic  explorers prepared for their cold expedition by in advance daily taking cold baths or exercising in a cold room or something like that. The idea is to stimulate the thyroid to function at a higher level. So theory and experimental results predict that it will be effective.

Other hypothetical methods to recalibrate the thyroid are intensive exercise and getting a fever. (But do consult your physician about such attempts for they may be dangerous.)

I am very much opposed to such use of medication. (Not if it is absolutely necessary, such as for diabetics for example.) It stimulates the thyroid to be lazy and prevents the body from recalibrating the level at which the thyroid functions.

hmm...my nutritionist said I was eating great...she reads my food journal every week...it's a lot more than I used to eat...

Rule -> RE: I have been asked to post a weeks worth of what I eat... (3/19/2008 5:45:27 AM)

She does not have Hashimoto's; at least that is not in the information that she provided.

texancutie2 -> RE: I have been asked to post a weeks worth of what I eat... (3/19/2008 5:47:15 AM)

Well...you are not a doctor.  Synthroid is a hormone replacement that your body needs.  If you don't produce it or enough of it, you are not going to stimulate or shock your body into producing it.  Untreated hypothyroidism would eventually be the end of someone, so thank goodness there is a synthetic hormone replacement available.

texancutie2 -> RE: I have been asked to post a weeks worth of what I eat... (3/19/2008 5:51:28 AM)

Hashimotos is the main cause of hypothyroidism.  Even if that was not the cause, hypothyroidism presents itself relatively the same way, and the same treatment is used.  I was just speaking of what I was diagnosed with.  Treatment is the same.

dollparts85 -> RE: I have been asked to post a weeks worth of what I eat... (3/19/2008 5:53:21 AM)

What is Hashimoto's?
