Could curvier women be more intelligent than their skinnier peers? A new study seems to suggest that this is the case. But there may be more to these findings than meets the eyes.

The Claim
Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of California at Santa Barbara looked at data from a study of more than 16,000 women and girls from 1988 to 1994 that detailed their body measurements, as well as their education level and their scores on various cognitive tests.

What they report is that women with waists that were about 70 percent of the diameter of their hips scored slightly better on intelligence tests and tended to have a slightly higher level of education than women with a higher waist-to-hip ratio, or WHR.

The study was published in the journal of Evolution and Human Behavior.

"Controlling for other correlates of cognitive ability, women with lower WHRs and their children have significantly higher cognitive test scores," the study authors note in the article.

And the study authors also said that men, whether they know it or not, tend to prefer mates with a lower waist-to-hip ratio because of this advantage.

The researchers suggest that the reason for the findings lies in the differences between the fat stored in the hips and legs, and that stored in the belly. The fat surrounding fuller hips and thighs, they said, holds higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which foster brain growth.

This article seems to be saying women with LOWER WHRs are more intelligent.
Seems to me that that's not curvy, that's fat.
Higher WHR = bigger curve between waist and hip.
Lower WHR = more apple shaped.
Am I misunderstanding something?

I don't see where this article could possibly be accurate...stupid people come in all shapes and sizes

Yup, sorry.

Waist-to-hip ratio = waist measurement divided by hip measurement

If you have a 22" waist and a 44" hip measurement*, then 22/44 = .5 WHR
If you have a 35" waist and a 35" hip measurement, then 35/35 = 1 WHR
So the lower ratio has the more pronounced curve.

Yes - a low WHR is hourglass. A high WHR is the apple on sticks type of figure. Below you will find a New Scientist article which tries to explain that hourglass also seems to mean higher fertility. Which can be a shag more than anything.

my hip to waist ratio says I'm apple shaped *sighs* LOL I gots big boobs and hips though! But appartently, my waist is huge too LOL

I wouldn't worry about it. I just wish they'd conduct studies on the correlation between the length of men's shlongs and their IQs. Or between the size of their balls and how far up they climb on the social ladder. That kind of shit.

It would be interesting to find out if there was a link

.

My point is: WHY are women seemingly the only subjects of such useless studies?

Is it just me or is this a slightly disguised 'fat thread'?

Apple shaped (overweight) equals being not so smart.Curvy shaped (not overweight) equals being smarter. My mother is scrawny. 5'10" and weighs 115. She has virtually no shape lol but golly gee her IQ is 175.

Well im like a genius and im curvy so it works for me :D

I think academics spend too much time looking for causal patterns where there are none, I remember my last year of my degree my lecturer stood up and said "I am sure you will all go out now and find nice research positions, the problem is there are no 'rules' no generalisations, everything can be proven and disproven, of course dont tell your employers that" and its true, we can look for links but there will always be exceptions so I dont know why we bother really, it doesnt make much of a differance anyway and our resources would be put to far better use looking for cures for cancer and the like.

Very true - it's easy to make a random proposition ("curvy women are cleverer"; "symmetrical visage = high fertility") and to go and find facts and figures which seem to correlate such a proposition.

And it's obvious that women make for ideal subjects for such sensationalistic studies - easy fodder for media scrutiny and self-critical little sillies that we are

.

So, who are the scientists on the boards? I'd like to commission a study on men, for a change ;-p.

Yet no one gives it a moments thought when they call ME a smartass. Well, you now see how wrong that truely is.

I will also point out if you have that kind of ass you will need to know 45 safewords in forward and reverse order, archaic and current meanings and several other things, so you would have to be of above average intelligence as a matter of survival.

I hope not. My pulling technique requires a minimum IQ and a maximum sex drive. I also expect dates to take an early taxi home in the morning with a smile on their face and no answering back. Intelligence just makes a woman troublesome and I could do without that. It's not as if I want a conversation with her, I have male friends for that!
