Its reminiscent of the push towards bio-fuels. Seemed like a great idea - except now there is no much land given over to growing bio-fuels that there isnt enough food to go round and prices are shooting up, affecting the poorest most of all.

What I cant for the life of me fathom though, is how no one thinks these things through - they seem to spend a lot of time and energy on thinking of ways to solve one problem, without considering what other problem might thereby be occasioned. These arent stupid people, which is why I find it so surprising. Cynics might conclude that they dont mention problematic effects for some other reason.

The way to go is to push LED lighting. It exists already. It's able to be adjusted to different levels using a dial type switch, more expensive to start, but much cheaper in the long run as they will light up for years, continuously not just x number of hours (5000 I think is what a florecent is) at pennies on the dollar compared to even florecents. They can even be imbedded in your walls, taking away the need for lamps and such.

But it had "good intent"!

And I'm sure the messiah, Al Gore, and his apostles made plenty of money once they conned and/or paid for the votes to pass the law in congress.

Results are only important to those evil people who focus on reality and the big picture.

"Sorry but we had good intent!"; is the product of a generation who got trophies for finishing last and finds it impossible to consider that they are just plain wrong.

Get a better toilet. The one we have is highly rated and well worth the money, low flow high power flushes, it's great.

If you grow corn its stupid.
There are types of sugar plants and beans that are MUCH better match for bio-fule and produce more fuel.

I'm not convinced Moloch I'm sorry. We need food and we cant eat anything else, whilst we could power our vehicles and homes with something other than oil products.

Switch grass is the best and least expensive of them to grow and use for bio fuel and does not cause a rise in the price of food crops. 100 100square mile solar energy farms across the country are the best idea of all. All the energy needs for our homes, and electric vehicles as well. Save fossil fuel for transportation and air services, and the military too.

Fact is, the US could be energy self sufficient as fast as it could put up such energy farms. The biggest hold back... cost. But even that is sillly. Why? Because the initial cost, while high, is paid for by the low upkeep due to the high reduction of moving parts and long life of the systems. Not to mention that the power distribution grid already exists and covers most all of the country.

My turds are as God made them.

To everyone else – thanks for the recommendations but I live in New York State and doing things that make sense is illegal here.

Not really. Did you read that Snopes article regarding all the steps you're supposed to take if a cfl bulb breaks?

And who is going to do all of that.

Bottom line is that after years of using cfl bulbs, mercury contamination will be a fact of life everywhere you go. And mercury is nasty.

As for using cropland to grow fuel, it doesn't matter what crop is used, the poorest among us are going to be starved. Riots are underway as we type these posts, though they get no front page press. It's there for the Googling though, if anyone cares to learn about it.

Yes,pretty much like cleaning up a regular broken light bulb except the disposal.

And who is going to do all of that.
Everyone except the ignorant, lazy and stupid.

Yup...even the CDC recommends that we limit our intake of fish which has been ubiquitously contaminated with it.

Gee, i wonder why we don't use switch grass then ? Maybe it's because *no one* knows how to process it at volume for any kind of reasonable cost. You know, it's a technicality, it doesn't exist. The same as anthropogenic global warming.
