ORIGINAL: LadyEllen Its reminiscent of the push towards bio-fuels. Seemed like a great idea - except now there is no much land given over to growing bio-fuels that there isnt enough food to go round and prices are shooting up, affecting the poorest most of all. What I cant for the life of me fathom though, is how no one thinks these things through - they seem to spend a lot of time and energy on thinking of ways to solve one problem, without considering what other problem might thereby be occasioned. These arent stupid people, which is why I find it so surprising. Cynics might conclude that they dont mention problematic effects for some other reason. E If you grow corn its stupid. There are types of sugar plants and beans that are MUCH better match for bio-fule and produce more fuel. Switch grass is the best and least expensive of them to grow and use for bio fuel and does not cause a rise in the price of food crops. 100 100square mile solar energy farms across the country are the best idea of all. All the energy needs for our homes, and electric vehicles as well. Save fossil fuel for transportation and air services, and the military too. Fact is, the US could be energy self sufficient as fast as it could put up such energy farms. The biggest hold back... cost. But even that is sillly. Why? Because the initial cost, while high, is paid for by the low upkeep due to the high reduction of moving parts and long life of the systems. Not to mention that the power distribution grid already exists and covers most all of the country.
